Hey..so I've been playing guitar for as long as i can remember and I have come to the conclusion that I either just don't have the abiltiy or its my fuckin hands...

Does anyone out there know of any REALLY good teachers that can help me? Or is it that some people just plain out CAN"T play guitar? I know I have musical ability but my hands are just big and clumbsy...am I wasting my time by going for lessons?
Thanks in advance - Wed, 27 Jun 2007 12:12pm Edited: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 12:15pm

Well in the IT business we refer to guys like me as ..."self-inflicted"
basically my practice is not very well structured so the results are nonetheless not surprising.
That being said I again, feel pretty comfortable with strumming and timing, its the picking, slapping and lead stuff that I get lost in..
probably should play bass but guitar is like that really hot blond that I know I'll never have but feels like I should...making any sense? - Wed, 27 Jun 2007 6:01pm

It is my experience that unless you're naturally gifted (very few people are) to develop real skill at any instrument, takes hours daily, and years of practice.

So unless you're practicing at least a hour a day on pure technique (to improve your coordination and create the proper muscle memory etc) and unless you've been doing that consitently for at least 2 years, you cannot expect yourself to be "great".

Don't think for one minute that anyone else you see that makes it look easy or you think has great skill got there on easy street.

Finding inspiration is the hardest part. Something that will make you want to keep doing it every day.
Some get that simply becuase they love it.
Some get it becuase they keep getting inspired by their idols.
Some get it becuase they work with other inspiring musicians and teachers.

And at the end of the day, yes some people will simply never get to a high level of skill. They just don't have the physical dexterity to do it. Should have re-rolled when making your character or not put all the points into strength. - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 10:46am

Inspiration is definately not a problem, creativity...not a problem...
technique is my issue...I think anyways...or again my hands dexterity.

Totally aware of the level of commitment it takes to develop to that level and in saying that, I need to practice more for sure...
I guess I'm asking for help? Will pay cash or with soul - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 11:04am Edited: Thu, 28 Jun 2007 11:05am

I think if you have musical ability some technique practice is all you need. Technique is a harder thing to explain in a book, etc. If thats what you may need help in, get a teacher. I don't think your big fingers should be a problem, it's something to overcome but everyone has to overcome things they can't do regularly to learn an instrument. It's all practicing the muscles to shape the chords, etc. I think you can do it. - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 12:25pm

It always helps if you have perfect pitch (I know I do, and can't play guitar as well as many people in Victoria can). - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 12:35pm

muscle memory training would help you out if you already had a good technique to develop a program from. If your starting from scratch, find someone that has a vested intrest in the same style as you and jam with them; if you dont feel comfortable with that then ask them to lend a hand/help a bro out; if that fails, then header to a proper teacher to help you out.
Shit, if we shared the same taste in music(im not sure what your into) Id jam with you and show you some stuff that Im familiar with; if that helps? - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 4:41pm

Thanks all...
J.....Ummm I'm pretty much down with any type of style...I think primarily I would like to learn some more blues-esq and more contemporary shit too of course...
no objections to any said style, if you'd like to jam I'm down with that for sure dude, I'll just kinda pick up on whatever...
Again, I have been playin for awhile so I'm not completely green, just need to work on my technique so I can start writing more shit..the more you learn the more doors or creativity you open kinda shit...
cheers, if you're down with a jam and a brew ha ha let me know dude - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 6:19pm

I've heard good things about the guys at Tempo Trend. With that said, I think everyone can play well if they practiced. For me I put in my time when I was younger and now and I just do maintanence practice. Every once in awhile I'll learn something new but mostly I just pick up a CD and learn it.
