Went to two shows at Sugar this week and both times I missed the opening band because they went on at 9:30 or earlier.

Is Sugar starting bands earlier as a general rule now? Used to be you couldn't even get in the place by 10 and there'd be a massive line-up outside. - Sat, 26 May 2007 1:24pm

The last 6 or 7 shows Ive gone to there have started at 9pm sharp.. unfortunately they have a habit of the bands playing while bouncers are still patting people down, which really sucks when you can hear the band who you bought a ticket for playing while some goon looks for your guns.

Rule of thumb is if you want to see the first band at a sold out show, go at like 8pm. - Sat, 26 May 2007 1:35pm

I only wish more shows would start at 9 sharp. It doesn't allow for as much pre-show-beer-sales for the club, but it might mean nobody is freaking out later that there is no time left. Longer sets too if possible, or two longer sets with a 30 minute break.

I don't really like the venue that much, seen *a few* good shows, but mostly not. When you look closely, it's pretty fuckin' skanky. The draught beer makes me WANT to puke right away.

from a standpoint of Playing there, I do not like that they start early. If you're the first band to play, nobody is there because you're basically playing as they open the doors. ... no good.

Sugar is one of my favorite places to play at. it's one of the largest bar-thype venues in victoria & they have a great soundsystem & they have 2 sound guys - one for the front of house & one for the monitor mix.

When I play there I can hear myself well & you can see the crowd really well (hell, you're *surrounded* by people front,back&sides)... plus they have a fairly large band area (well for victoria venues anyways).

Personally, it bugs me that they start so early unless of course you're headlining. - Sun, 27 May 2007 10:23am

as far as it looking slimy ... can you name any bar-type venue in victoria that doesn't look like a shithole with the lights on? :)

If there's 4 bands on a bill you can be pretty sure that the show is going to start no later then 30 minutes after the doors.

Both of the shows this past weekend the bands started at 9:30 and 9:40 because of this.

Sometimes it has nothing to do with the venue or the promoter but the tour manager and the headlineing. It should also be mentioned that the shows this past weekend didn't start while there was huge lineups outside, people were just later in showing up.

Sorry that you missed the openers though, they were good bands on both shows. If your ever wondering about start times you can always ask on the boards here. Most of the promoters in the city all read and post here so you can usually get your questions answered. - Wed, 30 May 2007 9:55pm
