trevor corey User Info... | So I'm at the Shell station on Esquimalt and Tyee. I pay for my purchase with credit card, the cashier hands me the bill to sign, I sign it, he takes it and puts the merchant copy in the till and quickly puts the customer copy under the counter. I walked away like a stoner thinking ,that was wierd, then I think, yeah, that was really wierd. So I go back in and say ,"hey, can I have my reciept". Cashier says sure and goes to the till to print one up. I say "no, I want the one with my signature on it". He goes under the counter, pulls out mine and another one, looks to see which one is mine, and hands it back. So my credit card number is xxxxxxxed out on the reciept. I don't understand how this could be a scam. I'm not into talking to cops, so I turn to you, people of Livevic. Does this sound like a scam? If so, how does it work? - Mon, 9 Apr 2007 8:59pm
Haden User Info... | No idea. that's weird. I mean, if he wanted to, all he would have to do is write down your credit card number and exp from the merchant copy. Smart businesses have their machines set up so the credit card number x's out automatically on the customer copies. Always good to check though. No idea how it would be a scam. - Mon, 9 Apr 2007 11:52pm Edited: Mon, 9 Apr 2007 11:52pm
Tyler User Info... | as a fast food worker, it used to be a routine to just discard customer copies of debit receipts since nobody wanted them. sometimes the dullness of a day would make me not pay attention, and I'm sure I discarded the customer copies of a credit card receipt or two. the under the counter thing is just an easy place to stick garbage, just in case anyone wants theirs back. and it's easy to mix up a pile of discarded receipts. I'm not sure if I understand what you're asking though, but maybe my experience can provide some insight as to the numbed mind of a grunt cashier job. - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 12:51am
Bryn User Info... | I agree that this was probably just an oversight. One scam for harvesting numbers is your card being scanned thru a second "swiper" unit that saves your card info. I've heard of those being installed at gas stations etc. where there is a high volume of customers and low paid workers. - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 12:01pm
pubert User Info... | actually, the paper used to print those receipts are perfect for giving home shaft swabs (if soaked in alcohol) so the poor guy was probably just setting it aside for himself. whacka whacka whacka - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 9:49pm
dumpstermesh User Info... | Hmmm...the only thing I can think of in the scamming kind of sence is maybe he was setting aside the receipts of people he planned on copying the credit card number off of. It would be as simple as matching up the one you signed to the customer copy which is xxxx'ed out. Some of my customers actually ink over all the numbers on the receipt when they sign it. No one can copy them that way. Sometimes when they are verifing your signature they could be memorizing your little number of the back to write down later. It's the one that verifies that you have the card in your possesion when you make purchases online. Always make sure you can see your card when you hand it over. - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 10:21pm
Brian VIHC User Info... | Not a scam. The guy sounds like he was either new at the job or just forgetful. The business needs the copy with the signature on it for the transaction. He'd get caught pretty quickly especially at a place as regimented as a gas station doing something so obvious. You can always tell the credit card company to void any unauthorized transactions anyways - cash is much easier to scam for. There's no paper trail. - Wed, 11 Apr 2007 7:56am
