_Griphin_ User Info... | Apparently they might be closing the Douglas (it should be in Saturday's Times Communist), shame if they did, I have never drank there. - Fri, 16 Mar 2007 11:59pm
TheWolf User Info... | A> The only Shame thing is it wasn't done 20 years ago!. They are renovating the hotel Floor by Floor, from the 4th down and renaming it the "Rialto" as far as I remember. It might be in Saturdays paper but it was in either Wed/Thurs for sure. GOOD RIDDANCE not too sure where all the stolen goods merchants and druggies will scurry to now? Monty's or Steamers or elsewhere? B> Nobody on LiveVictoria believes that you never drank there I kid,I Kid - Sat, 17 Mar 2007 1:17am
Kegfan User Info... | I had a beer with my mom at the Dougy yesterday. I'll miss the place. There will be very few options for the "unsavoury" people who just want to have a beer . Old timers, Indians, and yes, even drug addicts like to have a beer now and then in an environment that does not judge them. Gentrification has taken away one more piece of home for many of our most vulnerable citizens. - Sat, 17 Mar 2007 10:09am Edited: Sat, 17 Mar 2007 10:20am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Oddly enough, I know one of the general managers for the Douglas hotel. When I used to work for the Swiftsure, he told me they were planning to phase out the Douglas pub years ago, I'm amazed there just getting around to doing that. But the only thing I miss, whatever happened to Yukon Jack's?!? I loved that pub!!! - Sat, 17 Mar 2007 12:56pm
trevor corey User Info... | Never been inside the Dougie. Driving past it was as close as I ever wanted to be. - Sun, 18 Mar 2007 12:21am
trevor corey User Info... | ........I sometimes miss the Kings though. - Sun, 18 Mar 2007 12:24am
Tara User Info... | When I turned 19 my mom made me promise to never go there. I could drink and do drugs and become a prostitute and sleep in the gutter, any thing I wanted. But going to the douggie..... thats just to gross. I'm still not sure if she was kidding or not. - Sun, 18 Mar 2007 9:10am
Curmudgeon Rocker User Info... | word, Kegfan /curious to hear Dr. DoomXXX's take on this. - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 7:51am Edited: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 7:53am
Mofo User Info... | I have heard that someone has applied to re-open it but the city denied another bar being opened there. The justification from the city was that there were too many bars in that area....thats fucked. It'll probably become a fuckin Starbucks now - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 8:20am
Sati User Info... | I saw this thread a couple days ago and have been thinking about it. Kegfan really nailed it. It sounds like you guys (music fans) in Victoria have even less of a chance of experiencing these places than we do in Vancouver. Most of the bars that put on live music here cater to different crowds than we're used to during the day. Sadly the music drives most of them out, since healthy, young people living large.. you know. I remember when they first started putting shows in the Astoria (on Hastings) here and feeling so offended by some of the old-timers who assumed I was a hooker cuz I always showed up alone. I wasn't too offended by them thinking that, but by the fact that a couple of them obviously treated hookers with no respect whatsoever. grrr Then one night I walked in by mistake when there was no live music. Wendy & Jay were there anyway but it was for their delivery guy's wedding reception. I wanted to leave but the wedding party insisted that I join them for a beer... the bride was soooo wasted (& went out to get high part way through), as were most of the regulars, the relatives looked uptight, out of place and embarassed, but toasts (a little more than rude at times) were made & a union was celebrated like any other. What I also remember is being absolutely horrified by my own nose-in-the-air condescending attitude which I had to work so hard to get a handle on throughout it all. You'd think I'd know better growing up where I did. I was on their turf and they'd been kind enough to welcome me in good faith (and man, thats important when its a wedding), and I couldn't chill out and manage the same for them? I was told later that no one noticed, but I knew what was going on inside. Thats not self-respect, thats.. something very wrong that I don't think my mom had ever intended. Anyway, Wendy & Jay taught me a lot about how to treat people, all people, that night and Wendy even more as time went on. We ended up having a ton of good times with some of those regulars who were determined to stick it out in spite of some of our crowds, and in that way I miss the place. Sorry for your loss of the hotel. - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 10:06am Edited: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 10:26am
KSuga User Info... | I think the Dougie, should be closed. IT is about time. Yes I know it has been there a long time.... but i have never had the desire to go in there. it is just scary. If they are trying to class up the douglas hotel, they have to get rid of the bar downstairs. I feel bad for unsuspecting tourists who stay there, oblivious to the reputation it has. They make it look pretty nice, check it out http://www.hoteldouglas.com/ i duno get something good in there... like a breakfast place or a real tappa bar or just something. Hell even a community center.... kim - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 11:23am
gino User Info... | The dougie doesn't even hold a candle to the world famous Ivanhoe, or th American(now defunct) of vancouver. sure it's scuzzy but the Victoria version of scuz is a lot different from that of a BIG city. that place is like a local landmark but this city is a haven for retiree's and folks with cash and tourists, so really it is surprising that it wasn't shut down or at least cleaned up a long time ago. p.s. Does anyone know if really used to accept canadian tire money there? thats the old rumour about the place. - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 2:45pm Edited: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 2:45pm
trevor corey User Info... | Ha! Probably. That's a good way to encourage Gordon Head car break ins. - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 2:57pm
mattD User Info... | The TC article mentioned vague plans for a spa or something after the reno. It's certainly not going towards anything "community"-based. I had a drink once inside the Dougie, (fuck, why not?) it's the hard-luck crowd, old construction crew dudes, strung-out folks, the marginalized. That's part of the reality of Vic, of any town. They still know how to joke and have a laugh, y'know? Nothing scary at all, maybe a bit sad, though not really even that. That tendency to instantly recoil from the "gross, icky, and smelly" that some peeps have, seems to me utterly devoid of compassion (however, too much compassion, or some kind of sympathy/pity complex is probably even worse). People seem to be grasping for some "answer" to this over-simplified, compounded "homeless problem" (whether they all are homeless or not) and it seems that some insinuate or shout, "PURGE! PURGE!" or the slightly more subtle "Just keep 'em moving... where? ... I dunno, somewhere else!" Is it just me, or is this big-time fuckin' problematic? - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 4:33pm Edited: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 4:39pm
Curmudgeon Rocker User Info... | Too bad the Bounty Hunters couldn't start up again and set up a bar at that site, similar to what they had over at Douglas and Hillside back in the 70's. Of course that would involve knocking the hotel down and replacing it with dilapidated roadhouses. - Mon, 19 Mar 2007 10:22pm Edited: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 10:25pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | I walked past the Douglas today, ever notice the stone wall they have on the outside is starting to fall apart?!? Guess someone got creative in a drunken mood or something. - Tue, 20 Mar 2007 2:52am
Special Agent Jackass User Info... | Me and my buddy Jimmy lifted the "general rules" printout they had taped to the wall. I figured he should keep it as a souveneir of some victoriana history. 1. No Selling Of Personal Or Stolen Items (this is NOT a flea market) 2. No Selling Of Drugs (prescription or other) 3. No Drinking Of Outside Beverages 4. No Drug Parefenelia (yup. that's how they spelled 'paraphernalia') 5. No Fighting 6. No Unruly Behavior 7. No Personal Items are to be left behind the bar (with the exception of closed or bagged liquor) 8. No Public Washrooms I too agree with kegfan. I can count the times I've drank there on one hand, but I know from those few times that those who reside there reside with people like a family. It's easy to say good riddance and that the place is a dive. It totally is but for MANY people it's a sanctuary for those who are marginalized from the moment they step off onto the sidewalk. - Tue, 20 Mar 2007 4:56pm
secretcrush User Info... | To anybody with negative things to say re: The Douglas: I am not a drug dealer, prostitute, thief, nor am I homeless. I have had a beer in the Dougie several times & found it to be no more uncomfortable than a "tappa" bar, in fact, I would probably feel MORE uncomfortable walking into a tapa (correct spelling) bar and having to feel scrutinized by people who think a fancy, shiny atmosphere equals "safety". Have you ever been to a bar in Victoria where there is not a single drug dealer or user? I highly doubt it. The Dougie's patrons are human beings like the rest of us, some with nowhere else to go where they feel welcome. Shame on people for judging...put yourself in their shoes for a minute. - Sun, 25 Mar 2007 9:08am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Jeez people, it's the Dougy, one of the last old school bars in town. I think after the Dougy, Big Bad John's is left (the ultimate punk hangout), and if you feel safe in BBJs you'd feel as safe in the Dougy. - Sun, 25 Mar 2007 12:21pm Edited: Sun, 25 Mar 2007 12:22pm
Sprocket User Info... | oh please that place was an armpit......... but...now we won't know to cross the street when aproaching the next hang out were they migrate to..... yes drug adicts and homeless people need a watering hole too.......but i would not have gone near it..... maybe its because i'm a girl....... or have not walked by it when hammered!!!!!!! - Sun, 25 Mar 2007 4:18pm
Jesspsycho User Info... | I dunno I am a girl and I never had any problems going to the dougie. The only problem I ever had was every time I went there the damn bathroom was flooding out into the bar adn nobody seemed to care to fix it. Other than that I loved going and watching the regulars sing kareoke. - Sun, 25 Mar 2007 8:33pm
dumpstermesh User Info... | Weee....I used to go there for beers and darts, or that trivia game. I didn't think much about it, but then again I grew up in Langford. What's worse is that I've actually stayed at the Dougie hotel - twice!! How's that for white trash nasty. Some rooms have showers while others only have bathtubs. Now ya know. - Sun, 25 Mar 2007 10:11pm
Sprocket User Info... | ok... i take it back - Sun, 25 Mar 2007 10:54pm
PJC User Info... | Nice to see some of the more enlightened comments here. The Dougie was indeed a place of refuge for people who may not have had anywhere else to go. My sister and a friend were visiting from out of town and wandered in there by mistake. One of the regulars (a rather large Aboriginal gentleman) very pleasantly gave them some advice about the regular crowd...they had just the one beer and tried another venue :) - Tue, 27 Mar 2007 10:08pm
