Message Board > General Chitchat > Bouncer Regulation |
STBP User Info... | From the provincial government, released today. Topical on this board given several threads from last year: VICTORIA – Bouncers, bodyguards, armoured car personnel and the Corps of Commissionaires will now be regulated under a new Security Services Act to enhance public safety, Solicitor General John Les said today. The security industry has changed dramatically since the Private Investigators and Security Agencies Act was introduced in 1981. There has been extraordinary growth in the private security sector with new businesses offering a range of safety and security services not contemplated by the old legislation. "People working in the security industry are in positions of trust,” said Les. “They may have contact with the public in potentially confrontational situations and they need the same level of security clearance and training as other licensed security personnel.” Security workers requiring licences under new legislation will also include in-house security at universities, hospitals, banks, stores and door staff. In addition, the Security Services Act will allow for the direct licensing of security workers so that their licences will be portable when they move to different jobs. Currently, security workers are only licensed through the company for which they work. The legislation will also include a public complaints process. It will enhance conduct and accountability throughout the industry by ensuring complaints against security workers or security businesses are investigated and resolved. The Province currently licenses just over 12,000 security employees. About 9,000 are security guards and the rest are locksmiths, alarm service employees, private investigators and security consultants. By extending licensing requirements, the Province expects to include at least another 5,500 licensed security personnel. Because of the expected volume of applicants, the legislation will be implemented over a two-year period. All licensees will be required to have a criminal record check and meet all of the other standards set by the act. - Mon, 12 Mar 2007 4:39pm

Nev User Info... | I think it's a good call. They have a really important job, and I've seen many that do a phenomenal job and even more that do a terrible job, and can't control themselves much less other people. Hopefully the process will actually address that. - Tue, 13 Mar 2007 1:50pm
