Anonymous I personally think alot of the bands in victoria are ripoffs.
Grace nocturnal are ripping off the hives, strokes etc..
hot hot heat are ripping off the cure
little hannah are ripping off matt good
undergo are ripping off finch

All these bands are good and are probably going to bring alot of attention to the Island but, get your own fucking ideas - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 5:21pm
Anonymous and the hives were ripping off the stooges, who were ripping off the stones, who were ripping off.......

who cares?

You would have got more credit for being clever had you used the word "derivative" in that post somewhere.

Just think about it. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 5:43pm

Almost all bands are shitty 1-dimensional rip-offs. It's not surprising that many of said bands would exist in our town. You're likely to see them at any GARDEN-variety nightclub in this town. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 5:44pm
Curious George And every band in the world is a rip off of Chuck Berry. So shut up. That was a stupid pointless post. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 5:46pm
Anonymous the truth hurts - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 8:38pm
Anonymous Genre isn't the same as ripping off. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 9:15pm
Jason Its funny how you mentioned the best bands in Victoria. Little Hannah kicks ass, and i see them going very far. And hot hot heat? look how far they've gone already.

None of those bands are ripping off. I hear more then one influence in each of those bands. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 9:18pm
Anonymous thank you. finally someone has something nice to say about vic's bands. support like this creates a thriving music scene! - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 9:26pm
Anonymous influence....is a rip off in itself...just in a mild form. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 9:34pm
Tycho Brahe So what you're telling me is , you are a musician who writes and performs music with no influences? WAKE THE FUCK UP BITCH!!!!!!!!! - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 9:45pm
Jason Agreed, everyone has an influence. And alot of the bands that have influences end up sounding the same.

uh oh nirvana was inspired by the pixies! Black Sabbath was inspired by the doors and the beatles. etc. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 9:54pm
Anonymous my songs are completey original and have no influence for any writer or band - my stuff sounds like no one - 100% original - well... maybe I sound like...the beatles a bit - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 9:57pm
Tycho Brahe Gurgle, puke - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 10:00pm

Spark You know, there was a famous classical composer (the one who wrote the different planet sympony e.g. mars, juipter etc.) who hid away in a secluded cabin for years so that he wouldn't be influenced by others. you know what he came up with when he returned? CRAP!! Enjoy music, soak it in then make it you own. After all not one of you learned to play guitar without learning songs by other people - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 1:17am

I agree with you spark, except for the last part. I think that some of the best music ever made has been produced by those who learned how to play guitar by just fooling around, not reproducing someone else's song. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 1:32am
Anonymous look at any band anywhere and i can guarentee you another band has done what they have done. Even the king of rock & roll, Elvis, was influenced by black people...eminem style. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 1:58am
Martin I'll stand by and take the punches on this post if you want, because firstly i don't think Grace sounds like the Hives/the Strokes. Obviously the person who wrote this post has no idea what either Grace nor the other bands in question sound like.
secondly, why do you think it's necessary to rip into bands anyway? What the hell has Grace/Little Hannah/Hot Hot Heat ever done to you? do you think by cutting into us it will get you shows with us, or anyone else for that matter?
please revisit your comments and play nice.

and even more YOU PEOPLE ARE ALL SO STUPID. FUCKING STUPID. EVERY PERSON IN THIS THREAD INCLUDING ME REALLY HAS NO IDEA WHAT MAKING MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT. WAIT A MINUTE I DO KNOW E=WHAT MAKING MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT.

of course the local bands sound like other bands, like the the bands they grew-up listening to.
and of cousre they what to sound like the cure, matt good, etc. because thats what people want to hear, and you want your friends to say 'hey thats a cool song'
you don't see many local 'barbersop' bands and bands with tonnes of keyboards in them. we are all riding the music wave. every local band sounds in someway like a famous radio band. because it just sells. and deep down in side you just want to sell your music. not for money, for fame.

NOW FUCKOFF I HAVE WORK TO DO! - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:02pm
ticklefish I think the Victoria music scene is about to be born and explode big time, and I can't wait to see it happen. There are a lot of bands on the verge of big things, and it is going to open the doors for a lot of new people to get in the club too.
People with insecurities like to rip into others who are close to success. Those who make it tend to make it because to some degree they remind us (the listener ) of someone, but with a twist. Name one "original" artist out there...with no influence by anyone...Radiohead made it huge by being "different", but if you stop to really think about it and do some research, you can see so much Pink Floyd in them it is scary, heaps of Autechre, and bits of all sorts of things, but there's no "rip off" going on there.
There are only so many notes, so many scales, so many chord progressions and inevitably you are going to hit something that has been done before whether you like it or not. I "created" an awesome lead line to a song I am recording the other week, only to hear it note for note on a CD I had the next day that I hadn't listened to in over a year, and I didn't even know I was ripping it off, and it pissed me off and I had to find something new.
The best music is that which borrows from great traditions and styles and recreates a new blend of the familiar with the new. And whoever started this post, I am sure we would all love to hear your music, and I am sure that it doesn't sound like anything at all that anyone has ever heard before anywhere. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:28pm
Anonymous grace nocturnal does'nt sound like the strokes.....they just look like them. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:38pm

I have this tendency to borrow changes or progressions or riffs from other bands. So what? sometimes i know it damn well, other times i'll do it subconciously, like ticklefish is talking about. the point is that music is powerful and the good stuff can affect our lives in ways that i can't explain or even comprehend, so it's no surprise that a melody you've heard years ago will resurface at some point when you pick up your guitar (or whatever).

Who ever says that their music is 100% original is 100% full of shit or totally deaf.

btw, how many fucking brownie points do i get here, Jay? - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 1:19pm
Tom I agree with ticklefish and a little with the thread starter... Everyone does get influences from somewhere, someone else. Naturally, I just wish that there would be something to blow me away but I'll wait for it to happen. It could also be that I'm kindo old, so I'm harder to crack. I do believe that Vic has got something unique that could produce something very original, but I will say that vic is also a tough crowd to please. Lots of bands from here do better outside of town than in town. How often to mainstream and punk fans agree about a band? actually that almost warrents its own thread, but serious..
Maybe when that happens we'll all be shocked..maybe.. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 1:21pm
Jason Totally. I've found victoria VERY hard to please. They all like really heavy cheezy metal. The interior is the best place to play, everyone is welcoming with open arms. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 2:30pm

Virge, you receive 2 points for using the word "tendency" and 1 point for paragraph seperations, however; the lack of capitalization errors and use of the phrase "good stuff" may take you out of the running. I'll keep you posted. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 3:20pm
April O (ohmygodareyouintroublenow) Speaking of really-heavy-cheezy-metal and bands that are a TOTAL rip-off...WHIP is playing Steamers one week today!
Plagiarizers and proud of it!

the lack of grammar skills on this board, I tells ya - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 2:52am

Yes. Every band in the world is a ripoff of someone somewhere as well.
Some are more blatant than others. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 5:14pm
Bernie Queen & David Bowie totally copied that Vanilla Ice song Ice Ice Baby. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 8:16pm
Anonymous Yeah totally, fucking queen. Queen was the least influential band ever!! I HATE QUEEN AND BOWIE! VANILLA ICE FOR LIFE! - Tue, 18 Feb 2003 1:24am
Anonymous I dont think bands in our city are rip offs...so they get inspired by 'certain' artists...what of it? Its INSPIRATION, where would you be without that...how can anything spawn off of nothing? Dont rag on people who do what they love to do. - Tue, 18 Feb 2003 1:35am
shitondafork bullshit.. I was born on a island north of Port Hardy.. I ate berries.. made clothes.. made fire.. wondered why....why...who....

then a box with strings attached to it washed up on the beach.. where did it come from?.. the mystery deepend.. I found it could make noise... an amazing noise..

Even then I thought..

I think it's really really really really really really really really really really really funny the dude thinks Hot Hot Heat sound IN ANY WAY like The Cure....

Aren't you guys supposed to be accusing Ghosts or somebody of sounding like The Cure? Oh, wait, now we're supposed to accuse everyone of copping Joy Division and The Smiths....

By the way, all _my_ songs are so original, I don't play any notes that appear in any western scales... No, no.... I don't even play instuments.... My music is so fucking original that it exists only as a mass of light and scent accessable only through my portal to the 7th dimension, which makes me better than everyone....

Blah blah blah.......

(I'm going to bed before even I start to think I'm a pretentious fuck...) - Wed, 26 Feb 2003 2:11am
