lonemonk User Info... | I'm not as familiar with what is new, but I love lots of reggae. The obvious choices are just about anything with Lee Perrys' name on it. The earlier the better though for my tastes. Absolutely EVERYTHING by Burning Spear! Also, now in Seattle is a wonderful man named Clinton Fearon. He plays around Van and Victoria sometimes. Couple of wicked CDs he has (Especially 'What a System'). He used to be the bass player for 'The Gladiators', which is another wicked Jamaican band. The first half of 'Til Shiloh by Buju Banton is a must hear (If you like good mix of roots and dancehall). I even like some of the heavy Jacob Miller stuff, just before he died, that band was fucking tight! Gotta find some Live though, cause the studio records are usually a little lame. "I love Marijuana" LP by Linval Thompson. Wicked! Lastly, its pretty rare, and ultra slick, but in 1976 in Toronto, Johnny Osbourne recorded a record with a band called Ishan People. Its really good (but designed to be pop) reggae. For some reason he has a pseudonym of Michael Murray, not sure why. The record is called 'Roots' by Ishan People. . If you haven't played GTA3, the first edition, then do so and turn the radio to the KJAH station. Its actually a single side of a record by 'The Scientist'. Fucking wicked too! . . - Wed, 31 Jan 2007 7:12pm Edited: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 7:14pm

lonemonk User Info... | Darcy is very correct about Morgan Heritage, and Culture of course. My favourite culture record is called: Lion Rock. Check it out. All of culture is good, but that one LP sticks with me forever. - Sat, 3 Feb 2007 11:25pm

slik User Info... | listen to lonemonk ... he knows his reggie :) - Sun, 4 Feb 2007 8:29pm
darcy User Info... | Lion Rock is pretty rad, but I'm a sucker for Two Sevens Clash. Just, something about the overall tone of the album gets to me. Just thought I'd put this out there, if you're looking for a more soul/rocksteady type of beat, try some John Holt or Owen Gray..I've been into those guys recently too. but for reggae...hmmm...Suppose I'll just throw out one of the awesome bands from last years skafest. The Reggae Angels were really good. I was worried that on CD that they would carry that "over-produced" sound that brings down a lot of the modern stuff, but what I found was true to the roots, but still had great production. - Sun, 4 Feb 2007 8:59pm Edited: Sun, 4 Feb 2007 9:00pm
conga mike User Info... | or there is scratch radio or, right on scales.com. forward always , backwards never! - Mon, 5 Feb 2007 4:23pm
lonemonk User Info... | Thanks for the compliment slik, you must be pretty wise yourself ;> heheheheh . Darcy, I know exactly what you mean, except I always leaned toward Lion Rock. (Lion had much less of an overall concept though, no doubt) Two sevens was the more heard one by far, and it was extremely popular in jamaica. Darcy, I'll have to check out the The Reggae Angels, but you reminded me of a band called "The Wingless Angels" who had a record produced by Keith Richards. Its all fucking wicked nyabinghi drumming and rasta chant stuff (and some other instrumentation). Keith is a reggae fanatic as well. . - Wed, 7 Feb 2007 9:41pm Edited: Wed, 7 Feb 2007 9:43pm

Brandon User Info... | 10 ft. Ganja plant is fuckin awesome, my favorite reggae band for about 6 months now. They have a great spread, and the way they record is pretty sweet, it almost sounds vintage. Midnight Landing, Hillside Airstrip, and Bass Chalice are the albums i have. Bass Chalice being the most recent release. They have a few members of "john Brown's Body" in the group, adds a rootsy vibe. I could send you the albums to you over http://www.yousendit.com if you want to check em out - Fri, 9 Feb 2007 12:30pm Edited: Fri, 9 Feb 2007 12:32pm

Brett User Info... | Hey Lonemonk, I know you can order 10. Ft Ganja plant albums off of the Jump up records homepage. http://www.jumpuprecords.com most albums are 10$ American including shipping. - Sat, 10 Feb 2007 5:06pm
lonemonk User Info... | Sweet.. Thanks Brandon and Brett. I found some 10 ft Ganja plant online at: http://www.roir-usa.com/lionssay/pop8294.htm They have a lo-fi version to listing to. Very good. This is the kind of thing I like to do when playing reggae. I like the authentic 70's roots shit, and the Dub is very tasteful. I'm glad there is still North american mofos playing this stuff. . - Sat, 10 Feb 2007 5:32pm Edited: Sat, 10 Feb 2007 5:57pm
