| Guy Who Thinks He Knows | So, just to straighten out the legality: yup, its still illegal to buy the shit - which is exactly why two things happened. (1) the Supreme Court ruled that our marijuana laws were unconstitutional (because they deprived sick people of medicine), and gave Ottawa 2 years to change them. This was in 2000 (more than 2 years ago). (2) Ottawa, in the form of then-Health Minister Alan Rock, contracted a Manitoba company to grow marijuana for medical purposes in an abandoned mine shaft (apparently so our world famous weed would be preserved in the event of nuclear attack). But, for various reasons, the "Rock Garden" as it was known failed miserably, and two years have gone by without the government providing a legitimate and legally sanctioned way to get medical marijuana to sick people. THEN, just last month, some punk kid in Ontario was arrested for pot smoking. His lawyer, being the theatrical type, challenged the arrest on the basis that the Supreme Court's two year limit had run out.... and won. The kid is currently free (pending Ottawa's obvious appeal to a higher court), and seriously here folks, our marijuana laws are now in serious controversy. The Supreme Court ruled them unconstitutional, and gave Ottawa two years to change them - and Ottawa did nothing, to the potential benefit of pot smokers everywhere. - Wed, 12 Feb 2003 2:44am | ||
