Message Board > General Chitchat > Stan Rogers Petition |
Troutbeath User Info... | Okay, Okay, I know that Stan Rogers was (horror of horrors) a folk musician but what the man accomplished is amazing. "When Canadian folk music hero Stan Rogers died in airplane accident in 1983, he was just 33 years old. It was a loss that devastated family and friends and saddened music fans from coast to coast. But the impact of his brief career continues to grow. Rogers was gifted with a powerful voice and a passion for storytelling, and his songs have earned him a place of honour in Canada's musical history. Songs like "Northwest Passage," "Barrett's Privateers" and "The Mary Ellen Carter" are cultural standards. But it isn't just as a performer and songwriter that Rogers is remembered: he was one of the first independent artists to make his mark on Canadian music, and it's almost impossible to imagine the east coast Celtic music boom without Stan Rogers leading the way. " More than one Canadian in a little pub in say ...Scotland have discovered that the entire bar can sing all the words to 'Barrett's Privateers'. My favourite story is about the guy who was adrift at sea after a boat sank. He kept himself alive by singing "The Mary Ellen Carter " until he was picked up. Stan did all this without being signed to any major label, something to encourage local independents. If you are like me and can't believe he's not already in the Music Hall of Fame then visit http://www.geist.com/stanrogers and sign the petition. Part of the reason he's not there already is that no major label is lobbying for it. If you could care less just ignore me, any slagging will be looked at by a 60 foot high Gorilla who has no sense of humour. - Wed, 5 Feb 2003 11:33am

Anonymous | The lyrics to 'Barrett's Privateers' are so vivid it's almost like he can recall a past life at sea during the 18th century. Tremendously important songwriter for Canadian music. - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 1:58pm
Pic-toe county | Thanks T.B....I'm now signed on! I've had many a night at my house singing Stan's songs, and turning on the younger folk to his tunes...hmmm our age is showing...took my son to U.Vic to the S.R. tribute night....maybe 10 years ago..great show.. - Tue, 4 Mar 2003 2:45am
cine fletsch | spend a night with me and you'll have lotsa more than trout on your breath........ poor thing...:( :( :( :( - Tue, 4 Mar 2003 2:54am
Anonymous | Dear cine fletsch: Let me bring this earlier exchange to you attention: Troutbreath - Long story........Troutbreath is a character in the feverish and overly hotboxed imagination of a member of King Bong. The poor man spent waaaay too much time as a Salmon Fishing Guide ever to be considered normal again. - Thu, 20 Feb 1:48pm RSBF - so he was a Salmon Fishing Guide but he had trout breath? there's something fishy going on you silly swan! - Thu, 20 Feb 2:01pm Troutbreath - It has something to do with a nasty incident involving the capture and subsequent release of a Sea-going Trout, also known as a Dolly Varden. Dolly Varden Breath being somewhat ummmmm....misleading. - Thu, 20 Feb 2:07pm helonwheels - Hee hee. - I just want you to know that psychological trauma this deep would need more than just one night of "therapy". - Tue, 4 Mar 2003 11:36am
