The decision by the Government of Canada in its most recent budget to give a tax credit to the parents of children taking part in organized sports (the so-called "soccer mom" credit) is fundamentally unfair. It provides a subsidy to one group of citizens by making a value judgement about the activities in which they choose to involve their children. The implicit assumption is that involvement in traditional sports has a higher value than taking piano or dance lessons, taking classes in the visual and dramatic arts, singing in a youth choir or taking part in debating or chess clubs. This is unsupportable in fact and undemocratic in its effects. Parents who choose to spend their money on developing the aesthetic, cultural and artistic gifts of their children should not be discriminated against in favour of parents who choose to support their childrens' athletic abilities.
Therefore, the undersigned petition the government to reconsider its announced policy and to extend the tax credit to all children and to any activity inwhich parents enroll their children for their mental, artistic or physical well-being.

I think that the link below speaks for itself.

I have signed it and do believe that the Federal Government should have arts for children as a part of its agenda as well.

If you agree, click on the link below and sign the petition.

Signed. Thanks Laprider.

Everyone should sign this. Youd be suprised at how many of your punk rock heroes took piano lessons when they were children. - Thu, 5 Oct 2006 12:35pm Edited: Thu, 5 Oct 2006 12:40pm

i grew up in a single parent household and we lived well below the established poverty line. i know first hand what it is like to grow up with very limited options.

i agree that in a perfect world artistic endeavors would be subsidized - i hate to see any area of interest unavailable to a child because of financial limitations. however, I don't think that subsidized piano lessons are going to lower child obesity rates or as effectively introduce the concept of team work as organized sport. furthermore, i don't think that this can be defined as "value judgement". physical health on a nation-wide scale has very real financial and institutional implications. with an already way over-burdened health care system, any positive attempt at lessening the future load makes sense to me.

unfortunatley, government has to draw the line somewhere. that line will never work for everyone, but at the very least they are making an effort to give children an opportunity to try something that might be otherwise unavailbe to them - and at the same time promoting physical fitness and participation in a team environment. as parents, we should be thankful for that. - Thu, 5 Oct 2006 12:51pm Edited: Thu, 5 Oct 2006 1:08pm

You know.. . there should of course be arts as well...
though coming from a really competive sports background... not only for me but my bro and sis as well... it can be EXPENSIVE!! FUCK! so any tax break is cool especially if you are a single mom with a talented athlete... so i am kind of torn..
if there is a tax cut for one there should be one for the other.

it's probably a good thing,
nothing better for a musician to see soccer kids excelling in life.....angst goes a long way musically and artisically. Except of course in the case of hitler....ehhhssshh.

I agree thats its wrong to give tax cuts to "soccer or sports" parents just because they fit into the social mold of a pro-active Canadian family. Horseshit if you ask me...
now I will step down from my soapbox and next up we have...... - Fri, 6 Oct 2006 5:51pm

People who have children should have to pay MORE taxes to discourage them from doing so. We could have a moratorium on breeding for 20 years and still have more people alive than this planet can indefinitely support. Every new kid is another nail in the coffin of sustainability.

Stop with the flipping breeding already. - Fri, 6 Oct 2006 7:44pm

Hey laprider, you wouldn't be trying to take over the role of social-cause-meister in replacement of LordP would ya? heheyh.

When I heard about this on CBC about 6 months ago I too thought that was a pretty narrow set of requirements. Obviously the government was hoping to show that athletics, and some control over what the media has been showing are alarming rates of over-weight children. I suspect you might be old enough to remember the old 'Participaction' and Katimavik commercials. The government of the day spend tons on that stuff as well. In Ontario anyway, the 70's school system was full of mandatory fitness programs, but I didn't HAVE to take music until Grade 9!

Anyway, I signed it too, but basically because I don't see this government initiative meeting all the true needs anyway, for me it is not just a sport -vs- arts arguement.

Nothing wrong with the government wanting to spend our own money making its people healthy, but we should be healthy in more ways than one.

In no way am I trying to value arts over sports....but, in my life....employment wise I have more friends empoyed in the arts then in any sports or coaching etc capacity.
I was lucky, my mom was poor but went withoout to see that i could pursue music lessons.
I only feel that "investment" wise, no one group should be chosen over the other.
Now get off yer ass and come watch me play tonite at Lucky bar! - Fri, 6 Oct 2006 8:52pm

I know exactly what you mean, and I prefer and have enjoyed art above all.

The cause is wise, I just think the Government could invest HEAVILY in both and the country would be better for it.

Cease existing military project investments (the next decade in afgahnistan for instance) and we have lots of money.... - Sat, 7 Oct 2006 5:10am

Well maybe its the governments way to try and get the younger over weight population of kids that spend most of their time sitting over a computer, or X Box out of the house to be active and healthy members of society rather living this lazy life eventually leading such diseases as diabetes, heart problems, self esteem issues, ect... which will lead to a big strain on healthcare, thus coming out of my pocket.

Its a lot cheaper to get your kid guitar lessons, or musical lessons, than it is to enroll him in lets say hockey. - Sat, 7 Oct 2006 7:36am Edited: Sat, 7 Oct 2006 7:39am

Who's to say that dance isn't a sport? Do you have a list of what sports are included? Also, I'm sure the credit isn't gunna buy these kids the "best" gear or equiptment, it's just going to help out the parents that may need it. - Sat, 7 Oct 2006 11:53am
