Lucius User Info... | Hey, I am looking for a pair of studio monitors and need to know what to look for. It is just for my bands little studio. Prolly looking for something with decent frequency response 50hz->20kHz and can fit on my book shelf preferrably. Do/will I need a sub with these monitors? I don't need anything really high end but not complete garbage either. Any particular brands I should be look at? I've seen the behringer passives http://www.behringer.com/B2031P/index.cfm?lang=ENG that don't look bad. Sorry for the complete newbness of this post. Cheers Lucius - Thu, 3 Aug 2006 11:51am
Neil User Info... | I got some of the Yorkville ysm1i's at L&M, and I think they're fine for home recordings. They go down to 40Hz and all the way up to 20kHz. I found them to be rather flat all the way across. I do think the high frequencies are a bit sizzely (?). And they're cheap. And they're Canadian. - Thu, 3 Aug 2006 1:26pm Edited: Thu, 3 Aug 2006 1:26pm
Lucius User Info... | How cheap are we talking here. Cheers Lucius - Thu, 3 Aug 2006 4:03pm
Neil User Info... | I think they were about $320 for the pair. - Fri, 4 Aug 2006 6:13am
Vegas J User Info... | I've used those Yorkville's for years...impossible to beat for value! I don't know if they still sell 'em un-powered, but I'm with Neil, they're great! Cheers! - Tue, 8 Aug 2006 4:27pm
lonemonk User Info... | They still sell the passive models: http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?type=71&cat=35 I've been thinking about a pair of the amplified ones, but I am leaning toward the Mackie's. I have a buddy who has put them through many paces. They sound great to me. http://www.mackie.com/products/hr824/index.html Or http://www.mackie.com/products/hr624/index.html - Tue, 8 Aug 2006 10:57pm
The Professor User Info... | Yeah I'm renting some of the yorkvilles too and they do a really decent job. I tihnk they may be more like $500 for the pair though, still much cheaper than anything else. As for needign a sub, you can go without but it is nice to check your tunes on a steroe wit ha sub as trouble can lurk in the low frequencies that you miss without it. I think you'd be fien to mix without it, but then burn of f a version and try it on some boomy stereos to ensure it isn't out of control. - Tue, 8 Aug 2006 11:52pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Good studio monitors?!? JBL!!! I'm runnin EPI 1200 series. Those are more house speakers then studio monitors, but they still help me listen to stuff and see if it sounds good or not. - Wed, 9 Aug 2006 12:44am Edited: Wed, 9 Aug 2006 12:45am
Microphonic User Info... | 824s are great, and they recently dropped in price. They've become my new faves to mix on. For even less, though, the 6" Genelecs they have at L&M right now sound incredible! I'd say better than 624s in the midrange, but with a harsher top-end. A lack of low-bass extension (as you expect in any small speaker design), but the bass that is there gives you some idea of what might be there. Lucius, I'd suggest looking at self-powered or active monitors, with a 6" or larger LF driver. You can probably skip the sub. Even if you're looking to keep it cheap, your options for a pair of speakers under $500 are many - recent models from Yamaha, Alesis, Blue Sky, Behri, etc. will all do a decent job telling you what you need to know about your mixes, and the price you pay doesn't require an additional amplifier purchase. Check out some recent issues of Sound on Sound, or some messageboards for reviews & info, and see if any of the speakers you're interested in are available to audition in town. Bring a CD with some professionally-produced tracks that you're really familiar with, and some tracks with extended low and high end to give you an idea of how the speakers perform. Have fun! ML7Mike User Info... | the Genelecs RULE, but look at the price! Hey, L/M have some Fostex monitors, $90 for the pair, must be shitty! - Fri, 11 Aug 2006 11:33am
Lucius User Info... | Thanks everyone, I am gonna check out some monitors this weekend both here and Vancvouver/Surrey. Got some good information to go on. Hey Mike did you get my last e-mail? cheers Lucius [email protected] - Fri, 11 Aug 2006 12:15pm
Microphonic User Info... | Dude the 6" Gene's are only $1200 a pair. Great price considering how accurate they sound. Dirk - Fri, 11 Aug 2006 9:36pm
Lucius User Info... | I picked up a pair of YSM1p's and the stands for $350. Which worked out pretty good seeing as that is exactly the price of my mesa cab I just sold woohoo. Now, I guess I'll have to learn how to mix properly doh! Thanks guys. Cheers Lucius - Mon, 14 Aug 2006 9:03am
lonemonk User Info... | What amp are you using with them? - Thu, 17 Aug 2006 8:57pm
Lucius User Info... | Are you talking to me? The YS1Mp's are powered monitors. No amp required. Cheers Lucius - Thu, 17 Aug 2006 10:02pm
lonemonk User Info... | Ahh ok. My mistake. I thought all the 'p' models were unamplified. I thought it was only the 'i' models that were powered and active. What do you think of them so far? - Thu, 17 Aug 2006 11:57pm
Lucius User Info... | lol, That was what I thought as well. I have only used them for litterally an hour. But that hour told quite a bit about the way I was mixing. They are very clear and punchy. Excellent purchase if I do say so myself. Now I guess I have a complete studio just a crappy venue for it. Cheers Lucius - Fri, 18 Aug 2006 9:50am
