Message Board > General Chitchat > WHO IS THE MOST COMMERCIALLY VIABLE BAND IN VICTORIA? |
Chiapas | Alright. I'm not asking who you like. Which band/performer has the best chance of "making it" in this city? Grace Nocturnal? Little Hannah? Johnny Action Figure? The Velvet Collective? King Bong? Anyone else? Anyone? My bet is on Grace Nocturnal. I don't particularily like them - or the Strokes - but I think they have the best chance of winning a large mass of consumers and in turn, a good record deal. - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 9:30pm
Wreaker of Havoc User Info... | Meatlocker Seven gets my vote. Their upcoming cd release is bound to sell at least 63 copies! - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 9:36pm
BELT4EVER | my babies ........... BELT ; ) Just cause I love them so! and Moneyshot too.... - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 9:49pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | Yeah Moneyshot. And maybe the Dayglos and NoMeansNo one day if they stick with it...... - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 10:12pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | That'll include the copy Aaron buys, cuz he gets no freebie. - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 10:37pm
Wreaker of Havoc User Info... | Well if you guys autograph it I could trade a treasure like that for busfare home from one of your shows..... - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 11:10pm
Anonymous | Grace Nocternal geys my vote. They're stuff is pretty "easy to digest". Also I think Rod iron Haulers would probably be doing pretty well for themselves (if they were american and got a deal with a label like epitaph) - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 11:13pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | That'll get you one bad-assed gold plated bus filled with booze, drugs and floozies. - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 11:16pm
RSBF | i think Wreaker was talking about the 'short bus' ; ) jeez, why have i been so mean to you lately? it's like i can't help myself. poor Wreaker. i'll make it up to you. might say something nice about ya on stage in Nanaimo ; ) if only i could find something nice to say.........hhmmmmm, perhaps Mr. Hell could help me with that one? - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 11:54pm
Fucknut | I'd say that nomeansno has already made it. They're pretty humungo in Europe. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 12:12am
Areo | The Fine Options?? They could do well-- maybe not radio or whatever, but be big, underground-like. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 12:16am
Mr. Hell User Info... | Something nice to say about Aaron? Hmm, people have told me his dink is smaller than it looks. Is that nice? Depends on how you look at it. Commercially viable band in Victoria that I've seen...hmmm. With the right agent, Peruke could hit radio right quick. Although I haven't seen them. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 12:33am
kevin | Armcrair cynicks get my vote. Better then grace. played with them in december. they are wicked. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 12:42am
Dr. No | Who Knows what commercially viable is these days anyways? And who cares? As long as bands are playing music that they and the audience enjoys it makes no difference! It's up to the general public to support live music and the numbers are increasing. So for you cheap fucks out there, pay your cover charge and enjoy the show.If the band sucks you don't have to see them again. It's the cheapskates that kill me.You go to a nightclub and hear commercially viable shit and pay six bucks, but when there's a great band playing the wallet dries up all of a sudden. The cheapskates are good for one thing however, and that is when the band suddenly becomes cool or signed they're the first ones to pay the 25 bucks opposed to the 5 bucks they could have seen them for two months before!God bless Those commercially viable bands. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 2:39am
Kristy User Info... | thats a tough question...Money shot prob cause they play poppier stuff, and that is all the rage today...."pop" punk. But that reminded me about Hot Hot Heat hehe, when they weren't rock stars yet they put out promo posters and as a joke they signed them for us....so I figure I wait a little while longer then exploit them and get rich doing it. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 2:48am
Night fall | Staaf Only!! - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 4:41am
Archie | Zappnin Black. It seems like I've heard the songs before. Stuck in my subconcious. Commmerrrcialll. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 9:19am
drummachinessuck | AK-47 IS GOING BIG. the next propaghandi. errr i guess the next band to be like HUGE mega band with 300 shows a year and stuff like that i guess moneyshot. the next nickelback. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 11:23am
Troutbreath | I'm struck by the number of bands in this town. We have an incredibly rich music scene and we all should get out and appreciate it more. Punk, Metal, Ska doesn't matter just enjoy it all. We are very lucky. And thankyou to Chiapas for the King Bong mention. If being Viable has anything to do with being legends in our own minds then we are just about there already. Thanks! - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 12:04pm
Enforcer | please go away, fishbrains. Thanks. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 12:12pm
Jay Watts User Info... | Well... It isn't going to be a metal band. Or a ska band. Or one of those pop-punk bands, in the mold of Blink 182, Simple Plan, etc. That peaked last summer. Or a nu-metal band. (Where the hell did that shit come from anyways? Christ. All those goatees, the DJ that didn't do anything, the music videos featuring lots of explosions, crumbling buildings and shattering glass - if that was a glimpse into the unconscious of angst-filled teenagers, I'd prefer to be spared their mediocre and banal expressions.) Or some shitty funk fusion group that performs at Steamers. Or a hard-rock group. In fact, I don't think that there will be a next group to achieve a measurable amount of commercial success within the next two years, because Victoria can only produce a certain amount of marketable music in such a short span of time, along with a hell of a lot of abysmal shit trying to be marketable, and a couple of decent and challenging groups that couldn't be marketable anywhere outside of the indie/art-rock scene (the genius of Daddy's Hands for example...). I think the next band to achieve some sort of "critical" recognition and acclaim will be Frog Eyes... This doesn't mean that they're going to be signed to some major with one of those "$50,000 advance then bankruptcy" deals heading their way, but I imagine that they could be picked up by a bigger indie label (Merge, Matador, something like that) and achieve the status of Destroyer, or more than that. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 1:38pm
Troutbreath | Enforcer, at least you said please but.......nahh I'm not going anywhere so bite me. Jay don't mistake being viable with "critical" success. Why do you worry about what "critics" think anyway. Most critics couldn't find their ass if you gave them the charts and a compass. Critical success has never meant anything in the arts ask Van Gogh. It's what the people who listen to the music want that drives this business. Real demoncracy at work and I love it. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 2:21pm
Jay Watts User Info... | Bah, real democracy? - hence the popularity of disposable pop stars and neo-grunge rockers like Creed/Nickelback/et al.? I'll listen to criticism before I'll take the recommendations of the baffled and bamboozled buffoons who lap up the purile bullshit albums put out by the tools in most of the music industry out there today. The best selling CD of all time is the fucking Eagles' Greatest Hits for christ's sake - if that's not enough to condemn the stupidity of the marketing mechanisms that make up the music industry, well, I dunno, one would probably have to look at the current top 40 charts. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 2:56pm
Buckets! User Info... | There are a few commercially viable bands in vic. I just heard some Peruke demo songs last night and they are pretty good with a cool name. I could see Gallow's End doing well, as metal bands go. They have badass songs. Moneyshot could become big in canada, I could see it. ML7 has a good sound, don't see why they haven't been picked up already. Oh yeah, whats wrong with the eagles? - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 3:12pm
Troutbreath | Geez Jay ya sound like Spiro Agnew. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 3:17pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Current bands which could be commercially viable in Victoria: Micky Christ, Mudslinger, Zappin Black. There's at least 3 bands I can think of. It's not the fact that current bands couldn't be commercially viable, it's just like a majority of bands which have been playing for a number of years don't really know how to market themselves, or have the drive to take the next step and get proper distribution. (that make any sense?!?) Yes, perhaps Hot Hot Heat are a fluke, but they were signed to SubPop long before "Bandages" got any radio play. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 4:24pm
Areo | I echo that call on Frog Eyes. Certainly they have viable indie credibility. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 4:35pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | Betty Ford. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 4:45pm
sootsprite User Info... | Look at what was popular somewhere like Thursdays 3 or 4 years ago, throw on some make up and sink a $100 000 in it. My guess is that it could be anyone who wants to glam up Daddy's Hands and call it a business. Let's all go in together. We all cash in our bottle deposits for music lawyer expenses, hand pick some handsome young lads and call them The Pedro Files. We'll get Frog Eyes to record an album of Daddy's covers and have our poster boys lip sync to the tunes. The only real problem will be finding a way to get Avril to do a guest appearance on the video. The lawyers will make it so if we have the cash, so get drinkin! We need those bottles to start pourin' in (so to speak). - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 4:51pm
Anonymous | Gotta agree with Griphin, Zappnin Black for sure. Prolly the most under rated band in town. Stick with it turds, people will eventually notice. Yeah, and Fatline too. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 4:54pm
Anonymous | i would have to say the hoosegow yep i can see it now pretty soon they'll all be giving us their autographs and shit cfuv will be soooooorrrry - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 5:12pm
pool boy | The question was "commercially viable". Everything must be factored in. Look, sound, talent, brains etc.. (you can't be stupid and make it big) You have to look right. Bands do not go mainstream and remain faceless, because people have to identify with their heros. you have to sound "commercially viable" in whatever genre you are. You will always have people liking different types of music. Frog eyes is commercially viable for people like jay etc... and last you have to be somewhat talented.(I repeat somewhat) my personal opinion is ... Little Hannah Grace Nocturnal Undergo Armchair Cynics Fine options You may now post your arguments - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 5:13pm
Anonymous | you are all fucking slaves - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 5:36pm
Jay Watts User Info... | Daddy's Hands covers? Wasn't that Atlas Strategic? KIDDING! KIDDING! - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 5:37pm
Cow Tipper | FATLINE!! If they can find a wicked vocalist they could be huge. I know, I know - the front man has an OK voice, but his real talent is in his guitar work. That band has wicked energy and some magical riffs. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 6:57pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | Well, Buckets! We haven't made an attempt to get noticed as of yet. Once our shit is all done and out, the rampage will begin. We are a beast in wait right now. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 7:29pm
Anonymous | ya, um - Johnny Action Figure - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 10:06pm

Anonymous | it will be the band you least suspect. one that none of you probably even mentioned. - Thu, 30 Jan 2003 10:59pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Pool Boy was sorta write, and I quote... >The question was "commercially viable". Everything must be factored in. Look, sound, talent, brains etc.. (you can't be stupid and make it big). Not really, see the industry works in phases, if something different sells 2+ million units, then the labels cash in on that sound/idea. They don't care, if you take a band which sells 2+ million units within 3 month's, then that label will sign up as many bands that sound like the goldmine, if they lose on 6 out of 10 of those bands, they still make there money back, it's a financial risk to them, one they can writeoff. You gotta be different in this industry, and talented... nuff said... Peace! - Fri, 31 Jan 2003 5:31am
Kristy User Info... | Under-blow...uhm...undergo... are already on their way to success...they r signed to Dream Works. I don't know how that happened though....must be the nu metal Jay Watts is speaking of heh. On the other hand...someone I would LIKE to get recognition would be those big scary tough boys in tough as nails...hehe - Fri, 31 Jan 2003 6:26am
Elliot | Kristy - You are an idiot. Don't believe everything that you hear. - Fri, 31 Jan 2003 8:19am
alastair // User Info... | Elliot when did we get signed to Dreamworks?? - Fri, 31 Jan 2003 1:23pm
Kristy User Info... | "(you can't be stupid and make it big) " I beg to differ hmm....Al, you told me that you were signed yourself, I think someone else takes the idiot award here. To bad it made you look bad. - Thu, 6 Feb 2003 10:21pm
alastair // User Info... | never said we were signed. - Thu, 6 Feb 2003 11:04pm
Gare User Info... | I heard a Dreamworks guy was coming to one of your gigs and he wanted to record a demo for you guys. - Thu, 6 Feb 2003 11:11pm
Kristy User Info... | Thats okay Al, I shouldn't have said that on here and made u look like the idiot, I should have just took the idiot trophy and ran. A lot of people I have talked to believe you are signed to Dream Works, wonder how that rumor got started? - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 2:14am
Anonymous | Do all you people mean teamworks?? Dreamworks is a movie company - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 3:44am
alastair // User Info... | Dreamworks has a label with bands such as Sparta, Paparoach etc. No we're not signed to Dreamworks and never will be. - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 3:50am
Anonymous | Especially now! All the major labels are reading this thread. Everyone be careful of what you type, it could drastically effect the out come of the Victoria music scene throughout the world..... ( Cue music of imending doom) how can we go on like this.......... - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 8:14am
Anonymous | Because of this whole HHH thing you figure there's be record companies crawling all over the place, trying to find more of the "different thing". Anyone even close to getting signed? - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 12:19pm
Wreaker of Havoc User Info... | We are currently in negotiations with some major players. We are unfortunately in a disagreement about the number of hookers supplied at each stop on our tour though.... - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 12:26pm
Anonymous | OVERSOUL!!!! - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 2:47pm
Bat Boy | Fat Line is where it's at yo! - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 6:18pm
Anonymous | I heard Little Hannah have tons of interest from a bunch of different labels. (that should piss off jay watts) But who knows? - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 7:38pm
Anonymous | why would that piss off jay watts? - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 7:53pm
Jay Watts | I am very drunk right now and feel like admitting to the world, at least all of Victoria that i have a incredibly small penis. Genetics suck so she won't. O.K. that's all for now, time to play quarters. - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 8:21pm
Anonymous | Why? Because jay hates commercial style rock. He's underground for life. (just like hot hot heat)(hate to bring them up again) - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 8:37pm
