A Question for the Armchair Cynics

I have a question regarding the song "Coalmine": The metaphor in the chorus ("It's high time/ you find/ diamonds in the coalmine/ called me") seems to imply that coalmines are a valueless entity by holding them in contrast to diamonds. However, coalmines are very valuable. Certainly a WHOLE coalmine is more valuable than the presumably small number of diamonds sung about in the song (although admittedly the lyric is unspecific as to the quantity of diamonds). Coalmines are especially valuable now with the commodity prices as high as they are and with China's reliance on coal as affordable energy. What are your thoughts?

I suggest that this problem of internal logic could be rectified by substituting "diamond" with "diamond-mine", so that the chorus becomes, "It's high time/ you find/ diamond-mines in the coalmine/ called me".

Anyhow, it's a great record. I guess you guys released it a while ago but I just thought of this now when I heard it on the radio. The lyric is pretty fucking cool too, and the words sound really good.

Cheers!

You are such an idiot crapper. Just because it's not "your style" of music doesn't mean they suck. They obviously don't suck if they got themselves a record deal, have songs on the radio and videos on Much Music along with touring. What are you doing? I think Coalmine is a great song. They have been working really hard and deserve it all. Show them some respect. - Sun, 7 May 2006 3:31pm

No. Record deals do not pay a dime. If you call making 25$ a day "pay", then maybe so.

However, working with mentally unstable people really rocks. Working with someone who punches people out on a regular basis for 25$ a day....can't beat that. Imagine if you had to pay to watch Ultimate FIghting Championship every day. SO the Benefits were good.!

Still, it was an experience. Just NO money. Good thing i have my day job. Even if it is at Cost-co. - Thu, 11 May 2006 9:43am

Most music on mch music is fake dude, you can suck balls and get a record deal. Major record labels don't want music, they want money. Thats the point of it.

ps: Armchair cynics arn't my style at all, and they may have talent, but I agree with crapper. they suck. - Fri, 12 May 2006 11:18am

I don’t think that they suck as musicians. I mean, Ken has a decent voice and the other guys can play their instruments.

However, it is important to realize that they are not writing music to be judged – or appeal to – their peers. They’re writing and performing music based on a formula developed by another BC band that is designed to appeal to a well defined demographic of Boppers and Drunk College kids. If you’re looking for insightful lyrics and/or something out of the ordinary, you’re not going to find it here.

Ken Coutu is approaching the age where the stuff he’s playing and writing isn’t going to fly with the younger crowd that he is writing for…unless the band can make that connection on a wide scale in the close to immediate future. It is one thing to establish that connection and reputation and then milk it for another ten years. However, it is next to impossible to get kids to take you seriously if they feel that you are too old and haven’t already established that you’re “cool” or “dope” or whatever other terminology the kids use these days.

They’ve got a small window and they’re working hard to jump through it. Personally, I don’t discredit them for that. That said, I hope that the band (or its defining member(s)) will one day step away from “the formula” and craft their music more for the sake of making good music than “making it big”.

Just my two cents. - Fri, 12 May 2006 4:18pm

But lets talk about the chorus here.

Coalmines aren't really so bad, are they? I mean, coal itself would be a more apt metaphor. We're talking scale here, right folks?

Still, great song. - Sat, 13 May 2006 2:01am

Well Coalmines were a very prosperous industry on the east coast for many years. We mined Coal, not Diamonds, and typically you will never find a diamond in a coalmine. Never. Diamonds are COMPRESSED coal, not coal that is mined. I tried to tell them , but hey, i was a hired gun. Not really though, cause i didnt get paid. - Sun, 14 May 2006 11:18pm

Why do you guys even have to judge them? Let them do what they do. If they're successful great. There are people out there that love them. That's all they need to keep going. - Sun, 21 May 2006 5:10pm
