Anonymous | Every computer that communicates over the Internet is assigned an IP address that uniquely identifies the device and distinguishes it from other computers on the Internet. http://whatismyipaddress.com/ (go to this website to see your IP address) Q. Can I completely block my IP address from showing up when I visit a website, send an email, or access the internet in general? A. No. Your IP address is necessary to establish a communication channel with a web server. When you access a website, your machine, using it's IP address sends a request to the server asking it to retrieve a document (html document). The server uses your IP address to send the document to you. If it was possible to completely prevent your IP address from being seen by internet hosts, how will the server know where to send the requested information? Your IP is an integral part of the TCP/IP protocol and cannot be made hidden. You can, however, prevent the web server from seeing your real IP address by using a proxy server. A proxy server is an intermediary server that performs requests for you, on your behalf and shows you the results. Example: instead of going directly to http://www.apple.com to post on their forum how much apple sucks and reveal your IP address in the process, you use a proxy server to retrieve the content of apple.com for you and show you the results. The proxy server's IP address is the one seen by apple.com's server. So, Your IP---->Proxy Server's IP---->web server's IP is how this works. When the web server responds to the proxy server's request, the proxy server forwards that information to you. So, you didn't completely hide your IP, but you pretty much accomplished what you want, which is prevent apple.com's web server from knowing who you are. This is not however fool-proof, the proxy server has a record of your IP. So if you plan to do something stupid, and the authorities want to come after you, they can look at apple.com's log, see that your nasty post came from the IP address of the proxy server, contact the proxy server admin and ask him for his logs and filter through them to see who connected to apple.com through them, which of course reveals your IP address. - Fri, 24 Jan 2003 2:32pm

Nigel User Info... | Mac computers do suck. They are sold based on the fact that it's "cool" to own a computer that looks like it was made by Fisher Price. I work with both types of machine (PC and Mac) and the PC is a much faster, much more flexible platform, that's not opinion, that's a fact. One of my co-workers bought a G4 powerbook just because it "looked so cool" and within the first two weeks both the DVD drve and one of the USB ports were broken and Mac said it's warranty will not cover the USB. I think that this plus the fact that for the price he paid he could have purchased a Toshiba laptop which would have been almost twice as fast only goes to prove my point. As for the argument that Macs are better for music, I have found that between "Cool Edit Pro", "Acid", "Fruity Loops", "Sound Forge" and my Soundblaster Live I've has excellent results and all the software was free and easy to download from p2p. So if you want a slow, poorly made, expensive machine with a limited software supply who's only plus is that it's simple to use then go ahead and buy one. - Fri, 24 Jan 2003 5:05pm

Milton User Info... | Nigel - My first college diploma was in computer programming, and your statements are quite false. Do to the higher graphic quality that makes it "look cool", you require more resources. If you could make a Microsoft machine run with active toolbars, hotswapping, 0-downtime, full duplex processing, oh yeah and mac being an actual multitasking OS, get better sound and video compiling. None of this is secret, OS X is based on the unix kernel and for reliability on a server and ease of use only linux beats it. It's not that PC's aern't fast, throw out your MS windows and load up Linux and then you can brag about the difference. Unless you are really smart, in which case you just get Linux for the Mac and you could compile a kernel in 10-20 minutes. But something every student at my college knows is that MICROSOFT SUCKS. Oh and about hiding your IP address it's pretty easy. Just hack into some chumps computer and use his/her programs/ports/IP address to accomplish your goals. Getting control over a microsoft PC is easy, very easy. Look up trojans, download one, and send it to all the stupid old guys you can find in a program like ICQ, and just say its porn. They will turn it on and you now have unrestricted access to their entire machine. - Sat, 25 Jan 2003 2:31pm
Anonymous | Running 'soundForge' and 'acid' is no test for the speed and stability of a box. Those are lightweight programs. Complex servers and graphics/audio workstations will require a lot more configuration. For the average joe, either platform will suit their needs. - Sat, 25 Jan 2003 3:03pm
Nigel User Info... | Milton- I like the way you say "diploma" instead of Degree in Computer Sciences. attending some chump organization like CDI or whatever the Mac equivilant is doesn't make you an expert on jack. First off, by cool looking I meant the case not the OS, I find Jaguar looks like an operating system designed more towards the tastes of pre-school students. Second, by slow I meant in comparison to similar priced PCs. Third, by fact I mean side by side comparisons (between machines within a couple hundred dollars in price) using Photoshop filters. Finally I do agree with you on one point, that yes, if you were to install Linux on a PC machine it would blow both Windows and Mac out O' the water. Anyway, I know that this information will fall on deaf ears, I was only trying to warn consumers against a poor investment in both quality and performance for their dollar. - Sun, 26 Jan 2003 12:14am
Tourbreath | Why are you PC guys like this? You sound like the Roman Catholic Inquisition. Unless I use the same platform as you you're going to rip my tongue out with hot pincers and pour hot lead into places I'd rather not think about. It's like those of us that use a Mac are some kind of infidel that needs to be converted or stoned to death. Smoke a joint or something.....lighten up. - Sun, 26 Jan 2003 3:29am
