Message Board > General Chitchat > EXCITING NEW YOUTH DROP IN PROGRAM "URBAN ELEMENTS"@ DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY ACTIVITY CENTRE |
Dane User Info... | RE: EXCITING NEW YOUTH DROP IN PROGRAM URBAN ELEMENTS The Downtown Community Activity Centre is excited to inform the whole community of a brand new Youth Drop In @ the Downtown Community Activity Centre called URBAN ELEMENTS. This program is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 from 8pm 10pm and then every second Wednesday thereafter until early April 2003. Joe Zemanek presented the idea and initial proposal for the URBAN ELEMENTS Program in September of this year and since that time, Kathryn Campbell (former Program Coordinator) Achilleas, Joe and I have been brainstorming ideas for expanding the scope of the program (which is rooted in hip hop culture as a foundation)to include other types of Urban Culture - music, film, literature etc - including but not limited to house music, funk, punk, ska, reggae, tattooing, etc. This brand new Youth Drop In Program has been funded through the United Way Youth Grant via the Burnside Community Centres successful grant application. In the summer of 2002 Burnside Community Centre applied for a grant as a part of the City of Victorias Community Centre Network which the Downtown Community Activity Centre is a part. The grant was intended for enhancing or creating new Youth Programs for each of the Community Centres within the Citys Community Centre Network. As the Downtown Community Activity Centre did not have a Youth Drop In Program, we thought it would be a excellent opportunity to implement one. I am very excited about this URBAN ELEMENTS Program because it is intended to both entertain and help youth explore aspects of urban culture, whether it be in music, visual arts, film, literature, discussion or other mediums. This program will be the first of its kind on Vancouver Island, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. We think the sky is the limit with this program. For example: general ideas that have been brought up include talking about various independent record labels, musicians/MCs, and various topics in different music genres. Proposed active activities include spinning instruction, breakdancing, freestyle, drumming and jamming time. At this time we have taken steps towards ensuring that the Urban Elements Program will offer opportunities for youth not found through other Youth Drop In programs throughout Victoria and the rest of the Island. For example we now have a video projector which can be used with our large 5.5 by 5. 5 foot projection screen. Youth will now have the opportunity to view videos related to Urban Elements topics more easily. Also, we plan to use our computer access program to offer youth the choice to explore web-sites that are of interest and that relate to the program. In addition to these facilities we are going to encourage youth to be involved in the main program design and development through guest speaking, Mcing, DJing, breakdancing, and sketching. Together these mediums and methods make a sound program however, community support for equipment and people that may want to contribute to the program are welcome. For example the program for Feb 5/2003 welcomes those who are interested in DJing, Mcing or b-boying. We also welcome those that may want to speak about "What role hip hop plays in their life" (the topic of February 5th's URBAN ELEMENTS. Contributions such as these will contribute to making this program be of high quality so that youth will enjoy coming. We are also looking for people that are interested in creating the first ever URBAN ELEMENTS official logo. The URBAN ELEMENTS logo should encompass the Downtown Community Activity Centre's official logo but should also be versitile enough to visually present the overall concept of the program. The main two instructors in this program at this time are Joe Zemanek # 383-5905 and Achilleas Kasapi #812-9657. Please feel free to talk with them about any ideas you may have about the program. You can also talk to me about any ideas you may have for future URBAN ELEMENTS. If you have any questions or comments regarding this exciting new Youth Program or anything other Centre Program inquiry please do not hesitate to contact me by phone at 383-0076 or by email at [email protected] Thanks Dane Roberts Program Development Coordinator Downtown Community Activity Centre - Tue, 21 Jan 2003 9:05pm

J | Give Dane a break. If anybody deserves credit for supporting Victoria's 'music scene', or anything else attached to it; he's a rock, and deserves a hell of a lot of respect. - Wed, 22 Jan 2003 2:00am
matt t User Info... | Hey anything that supports youth tends to be a good thing, but the topic to me just sticks out like a sore thumb. Not like it really matters though. - Wed, 22 Jan 2003 2:08am
Livevic Scott User Info... | Come on guys ... a topic all in caps is alot less offensive then ALOT of the stuff that gets posted on these boards. - Wed, 22 Jan 2003 2:51am

Dane User Info... | Hey everyone, I was talking to some friends about the post in caps and I didn't realize it's compared to yelling when dealing with message boards and stuff. I was just excited about the program. Anyway I can see how it looks a bit annoying to look at. But it is a good program nonetheless. Still feel free to come up with ideas for it. The more the merrier. Peace - Fri, 24 Jan 2003 6:09pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | I fully support anything that does some good. I was only commenting on the 10 posts all around the board all in caps. No big deal. Everyone is so sensitive on BB's. - Fri, 24 Jan 2003 6:17pm
