and aisle 7 placed fourth

i know some of the younger bands that played last night at legends (feb 19) for the supernova show are on livevic and some people that go to local shows read livevic.
aanyway
supernova is a joke
they enjoy taking money from (12 dollars presale) (15dollars at the door) and manipulating children to think they have a chance at winning
personally i believe that they did not choose winning bands, on talent, crowd approval, overall sound or anything really, they just chose bands on age.

i would love to have a good conversation here on the good and bad of supernova.
btw

I think that supernova shows are a great way to see just how good your band really is. If you can't sell enough tickets or have a poor crowd response, sorry son but there's a reason. If you are really good they will feature your band and set you up with shows in other cities. Age is crucial in the music industry - you can't be too young but you can't be an old fart. Kids would rather idolize some 18 year old that is up all night partying than a 30 year old that gets heartburn from one too many, or a 14 year old that can't be wild because his parents had to come on tour with him.

And really, $15 is almost a buck a band which is stupid cheap if you ask me. - Mon, 20 Feb 2006 5:52pm

ive set this up more on the up and coming board
it probally all should go here
but oh well
it fits both
mods can move it if they like

i dont want to be defending myself or my band, crying on how we didnt "place" and i use that term lightly. i would prefer it to be about supernova. but it will most likely come to that. so let it come.
all my arguing points are on the other one so far. and your right about that 18 years old thing, which we are and are getting bookings and were hip. supernova is just looking to make money off you if you are what they are looking for. 15 bucks yea a buck a band, how many of those bands did you want to see. no offense to you young guys cause alot of you are quite talented. - Mon, 20 Feb 2006 6:00pm

"supernova is just looking to make money off you if you are what they are looking for."

Dude that sums up the entire music industry. It's something you gotta deal with if you want to do more than the local bar band thing - Mon, 20 Feb 2006 6:16pm

your right, i dont have a problem with people taking a deserved cut for having a bar/venue avaiable for bands to play or people taking a cut that organize and set up. ive set up bar shows and im not even 19, its alot of work. granted.
but they try to look so supportive with all kinds of flashy gimmicks. that is what bugs me. hell they couldnt say my bands name and when we told him what it was he didnt care. it was all just a vizard.
you could win a TOUR WITH GOB everyone!
Please. they support who they want. did they look at us figured we looked too young and didnt care, i dont know. - Mon, 20 Feb 2006 6:39pm

Like I said they can be supportive to you if you're good. A tour with Gob would be great exposure, I don't see a bad side to that. You don't like 'em? Then one up them. And if you thought this all was a rip off then why enter? And you got fourth place out of 12, why are you complaining? - Mon, 20 Feb 2006 6:57pm

i would and im sure my whole band would love to tour with gob. sure, exposure is exposure, that would be amazing.im sure there cool guys, there music is alright or whatever. i found supernova by chance online, and took the chance. we didnt know it was all a rip off. but we played to our friends, because there was no advertising. lots of exposure there... we werent even in the original line up. we were a replacement. my and my band were talking and we would of put of posters for free. but we didnt have time. and my band didnt get fourth, we got sixth or higher. - Mon, 20 Feb 2006 7:22pm

But could someone explain to me if the bands listed on the Supernova website are local? And if they are, then how come I haven't heard of these bands before, let alone found/recieved demos from them?!? And if those bands are reading this, I'd love to get demos from you. Are the bands from the SuperNova show planning to release a compilation, for instance?!? And yes, everyone's in the game to make a buck or two, bills and costs have to be paid somehow. Do the bands know what they're getting into or are they being taken for granted?!? If they are being taken for granted, that's not cool.

Having the opportunity to tour with a well known band like Gob (who will probably give out a ton of pointers and help the band out) is worth winning. - Mon, 20 Feb 2006 11:03pm

i am the lead vocalist from the band Assembling valor http://www.AssemblingValor.com http://www.myspace.com/Assemblingvalor
if your interested.

the bands listed on supernova are local to there selected city.
and no from my knowledge supernova is not going to release anything. supernova is a company across Canada.
the bands are all aware of the prizes.
all it says for judges is: judges will be there.
from my knowledge there were no judges, just the guys who ran it picked the band they thought they could market the best.

i really hope the bands that won dont hate me. good for them. i wish i was picked, sure. have fun on tour with gob, 3 inches of blood or the salads if you get that far. - Mon, 20 Feb 2006 11:44pm

Johnny, I thought Assembling Valor were feckin' sweet; don't let this Supernova stuff piss you off. Just grin and bear it, theres gonna be lame shows for everyone at some point or another.

And Griph, all the "local" bands are at least from the island, as far as I know... most of us are pretty new to the scene, with few shows under our belts, which might explain why you've never heard of us. If you want the Hollydene demo, I'd be happy to throw you a copy, just let me know the easiest way to get it to ya. - Tue, 21 Feb 2006 2:45am

I don't know, I mean if you don't like something, then do it yourself. This town ain't controlled by 1 company, it's too diverse to be controlled. Easiest way to get it to me? As always, just meet up with me at the Fifth Street Bar 'n Grill. I wish I had an office and ran my own label, but well, like that will ever happen. - Tue, 21 Feb 2006 10:59am

thank you gunner, that is most appreciated.
I'm thinking now that it was good to play that show. it was fun to play and i think thats the best we have ever sounded. we were stoked on our sound so i guess we thought we would have placed better, also we got a really good support after we played from people we didnt sell tickets too, so that was cool.
we didnt know they were looking for a peticular sound and i dont think they liked my stage performance, i saw a few schrewed looks (sound guys, supernova chums) going off stage and i think i bumped there bass drum mic.
and we got a booking with The Set and Maurice from playing that. yesss.
oh and Hollydene brings the mosh as well. is your name the street name? - Tue, 21 Feb 2006 4:21pm

Yeah, playing the show was good for everyone. More experience, new friends, and sounds like you hooked a good show from it as well. If we could do the same, I'd love it.

We didn't bring the same sort of energy you guys had, but we enjoyed rocking out a little. I get nervous jumping around when the ceiling is so damn low... and my singer's PRS got shitwhacked when it fell off the stand, so I was pretty reserved up there. Next time, I shall flail.

Street name, sure, I guess. More people know me as Gunner than anything else, so it'll work for now. - Tue, 21 Feb 2006 4:49pm

supernova isn't really to blame.
i mean.. everyone already knew that they would have to sell tickets.
everyone knew that supernova would fuck around with them.
they don't care.
the reason why the get 128348421 bands on the bill is so you bring your friends to see "the black maria" who sound alot better than you. i'm not saying they're better.. i'm just saying they have been touring for a year striaght.. therefore... they sound alot better than you. also they probably have sick gear.
supernova is hired to hype the shit out of this band and get you all to buy there cd. there a promotion company. it's there job.. and... it worked
don't play the shows if you don't like it. - Tue, 21 Feb 2006 7:39pm

I'm guessing you didnt read my last reply Trican. It kind of ended my arguement and quarrels.

And no we didnt know what supernova was and we didnt know they were going to do anything. no one knows about supernova, with the money they have rolling in I think they would like to keep it that way. - Wed, 22 Feb 2006 1:17pm

Information for you young peoples:
Any music competition you ever enter will result in you being taken advantage of or being left feeling bitter, so consider that before entering!
If you really don't want to be taken advantage of by the music industry, just play heavy metal. There's no money in it, so no one can really fuck you over that much. - Wed, 22 Feb 2006 5:04pm

yes we knew NOTHING about it... the website specifically says we are going to screw you. i would love to see your thorough investigation paperwork on shows before you played them.
Well now I know what I get when I deal with them, and there was no other way to know. Since you mentioned it I've looked and tried to do some research into them. but there isnt much out there.
thanks for your insight - Wed, 22 Feb 2006 5:30pm

Tristan is wise.

The best music "battle of the bands" on this Island is Lucky's. No non-sense, popularity contest, goodtimes for a $1001 Cash. Done.

CiTR in Van has a sweet one every fall if any band has the ability to ferry over to Vancouver on a Tuesday Night.

Judged by Music Nerds and the band that wins has a decent shot to move on into indie stardom land plus lots of spins on CiTR.

3 Inches of Blood won one year and the Salteens and I think In Medias Res won once too, I can't be certain.

Anyway, that contest happends in the Fall, so you could sign up for that, then do the Lucky Bar thing in the spring.

There is lots of indie media, so be sure to use it.

MySpace
Pure Volume
CBC 3 Podcast
CBC 3 Satelite Radio

In Vic: Brand X, Monday, My Podcast, The Zone's Band of the Month, Devlin on the TC, CFUV (probably the best to get started and get some air play), Village 900 for the folky stuff, A-Channel has bands on sometimes, Daily on SHAW. Sun FM in Duncan has a local music show too, I think its more for the Cowichan area, but talk to Zane.

In Van: CiTR, CJSF, CFRO, Terminal City Magazine, Nerve Magazine, Discorder Mag, Georgia Straight, CFOX has an Indie, Punk and Metal show... talk to Lana.

mmm that's all I can think of right now. - Tue, 28 Feb 2006 2:06pm

Lucky Bar IS NOT a shithole, one of the few clubs that gives a shit about people, and there totally fair in paying the bands, and there totally supporting numerous styles in the scene (not just one type of music gets jammed there). Wow, you really dislike the place? I was mad at them, cause when I used to drink there I could never run tab (WTF?!?) and there stupid bar ATM charges too much per transaction. Man, I spent enuff cash there, and no tab?!? Sigh... methinks they were worried I might skip on a tab, which in all my years of getting gooned I've NEVER skipped on. Even if I had, I would be down there the next day to pay it, but I've never welched. - Sat, 4 Mar 2006 8:41pm Edited: Sat, 4 Mar 2006 8:44pm
