_Griphin_ User Info... | Awesome work, but who did it? - Sat, 21 Jan 2006 2:14pm
Bryn User Info... | If I'm remembering correctly, it was Glen Mullaly of the Stupes. He did a ton of art for local advertisments around the same time. He had a show on CFUV for years as well. - Sat, 21 Jan 2006 8:26pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | OK, now what happened to the band?!? I just mastered both Happy Time and Share It off vinyl and Demo For Nardwuar off tape, awesome band and a nice LOUD recording (Kudos to Zippgunn fer that). There also on the Full Dynamic Rage compilation, but the mix sounds different IMO. - Sun, 22 Jan 2006 2:29pm

Yo Mama User Info... | Jon lives in Edmonton, and sells rare 45s on eBay. Jamie still mamages Lyle's Place. I don't know what happened to everyone else. - Mon, 23 Jan 2006 12:42am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Whoa, that was the band Jamie was in? Interesting, he never mentioned anything about being in any band when I chatted with him about Mission of Christ and Victoria bands in general. Fuck, good band to be in!!! Must remember to bug him the next time I'm in Lyle's. Sigh, Jamie must be humble or something , I never knew that he was in a band until today. :) - Mon, 23 Jan 2006 12:50am
Yo Mama User Info... | No offense Griff, but did you not know Jamie was in BUM? Easily one of the best ever to come out of Victoria. - Mon, 23 Jan 2006 12:57pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | He was in Bum as well? Sigh... I'm getting too old. Are you sure?!? I just looked at the 3 CDs (and 2 vinyl EPs) I have of Bum (Debbiespeak EP (vinyl), I am Superwoman, Shake Town (Recorded Live), Wanna Smash Sensation, and the split EP with the Smugglers) and I couldn't see Jamie's name. Yeah, I was never a huge Bum fan, but I did like their previous band when they were known as MasterRace. - Mon, 23 Jan 2006 1:50pm
Yo Mama User Info... | Jamie was the original Bum drummer. I also forgot that rock 'n roll Tim Horner was also in The Stupes. Great dude. - Mon, 23 Jan 2006 2:40pm
Rawb User Info... | Yes indeed, Jamie was our original drummer. (Actually when we first started jamming we were called "Mint Used" **yikes!** because 90% of the members worked at Lyle's and the line-up featured Scott henderson on Drums w/ Jamie singing) Jamie is only featured on the first BUM 7"--A Promise Is A Promise. Tim Horner rules. - Mon, 23 Jan 2006 3:13pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | I wonder where one could find that 7" (other then next to nowhere). - Mon, 23 Jan 2006 4:14pm
brad User Info... | that 7" rocks my socks off...i WAY prefer the versions of these songs on that release than the re-recording for "Wanna Smash Sensation". Great fucking band, jack Tielman gave me his copy from the bottom drawer at fascinating rhythm in nanaimo after they had sold all other copies...and was i ever greatful for it. I have a recording of me doing an interview for Ninth Hour at CFUV on the Winnie Wincent InWashion (j.flowers show) in '92 saying "I'm REALLY into BUM"...fuck..as if i've ever lived that down. - Mon, 23 Jan 2006 9:44pm

Ty Stranglehold User Info... | Jamie does indeed rock, but don't forget to give Graham Watson his credit too. BUM were one of the first Vic bands I ever got into (long before I mover here). Still a fave! - Thu, 26 Jan 2006 5:28pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Yes, Jamie was mentioning about Bum this afternoon. It's wierd, all this time I didn't realize he was in any bands, and that he's always been a metalhead. - Thu, 26 Jan 2006 6:03pm
tdepression User Info... | The Stupes were a great, underated band...and great guys too. If anyone needs a copy of their 3rd 7" ("Dead Mars Revenge"), drop me a line...I've still got a few copies with the original cover, plus a couple copies with limited edition covers... - Tue, 10 Oct 2006 12:38pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Yeah, I borrowed all my Stupes stuff from Jamie at Lyle's Place. In fact, I even have the Dead Mars Revenge 7". There's a limited edition version?!? - Tue, 10 Oct 2006 2:02pm
tdepression User Info... | Yeah...the Dead Mars Revenge 7" was originally done to give away with the 4th issue of my Zine, Dragsville...in about '97. I did up a pressing on black that sounded kinda muddy. The plant gave me a couple hundred on red vinyl to make up for the pressing flaw on the black ones...I gave the red ones away with the zine, and kept the black ones to sell. The first batch of records went out with flat sleeves in the pink/red color...the second batch had glossy sleeves in the same color. Recently, I dug up a couple boxes of the records, and di the purple version pictured above (Purple Haze Edition) and a green version (Green Hell Edition) of 25 copies each... There was a 4th 7" slated to come out on a German label...I'd still like to see that come out. I was gonna talk to Glen about doing it as an ultra limited edition (like 75 copies) for spring release. - Tue, 10 Oct 2006 2:27pm

tdepression User Info... | Crazy...I've got the black and white version of the first demo, and a color version of the second...never seen the first one in color! Do you have any of the live stuff? - Wed, 11 Oct 2006 7:31am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Actually I don't, all my Stupes stuff came from Jamie (at Lyle's Place), and though I recieved a live Bum recording, he never lent me any live Stupes stuff, though I'd LOVE to get my hands on some. What first release are you talking about?!? Yeah, I love the artwork that was done, hence why I managaed to scan it all in. What was the 4th 7" release?!? How to explain The Stupes?!? There like a 50s PsychoCore band (I guess). - Wed, 11 Oct 2006 10:07am
T. Depression User Info... | I've got few live Stupes tracks that we're recorded (I think) at a house show. I know Tim and Jon both said they had more. The first demo I was talking about was the first one you posted the art for (demo for Narduar). The 4th 7" never came out...I know that Glen sent the finished package to some guy in Germany (might have been Daniel from Alien Snatch!)...but he never ended up actually putting it out. The germnan dude asked me if I thought he could sell 500 copies of a Stupes 7" pretty quick...it was the late 90's and interest in that kinda stuff was dying, so I said "Probably Not". He didn't even bother pressiing it up. So, anyway...there's a complete 7" worth of stuff, with art, ready to go. I'm going to get in touch with Glen and ask if he'll let me do up 75 of 'em. I think the Stupes were a great Pop-Punk band with tons of other influences. They had some cool istrumental numbers, some garage flavored shit. Really decent and totally underated...they won't get any recognition for a few years, cause that kinda stuff isn't in vogue right now. - Wed, 11 Oct 2006 11:21am
GlenStupes User Info... | Hey folks! Hard to believe that the Stupes warranted this many posts but it's a nice surprise. I'll try to answer a few of the above questions in case anyone's still interested.... -Yes, I did all of the Stupes solo release art as well as the cd art for the Full Dynamic Range comp. -A quick discography... 7"s..... -Share It 7" (Lance Rock Records) Share It Dollhouse Hoodlum -Happy Now 7" (Munster Records) Trudy 2 Time Hot Shoe Man Defribillation Brickyard Trail -Dead Mars Revenge 7" (Famous Fuzz Records) Dead Mars Revenge Searchlight Blackout Chop Chop Compilations..... Oh Canaduh! LP/CD (Lance Rock Records, 1996, LRR 019) American Bandstand (Infamous Scientists) 13 Soda Punx CD / LP (Top Drawer Records) Eep Opp Ork Ah ha Full Dynamic Range CD (Guacamole Records) Keeper Trudy 2 Time My Back The above are different recordings than the 7" versions. On Guard For Thee: A Collection Of Canada's Youth Gone Bad CD (Au-Go-Go) No Go Straight Into The Action CD (Wild Weekend Records) I Think You Stink Plus ( as mentioned above ) at least 3 maybe 4 cassette demos that were sent to radio stations, labels and band members only - in VERY limited quantities. Sometimes only 5 or 6 I think. The first was the Spaceman demo ( same image that was on some of the t-shirts and the OffBeat mag cover). The original copies of the demos had hand-coloured ( what was I thinking!!!) covers. The black and white ones were for the band. I still have a lot of unreleased studio material including an album's worth recorded just after we broke up. Some of that is on the Dead Mars 7" and more was to be released on the above mentioned German 7". The songs were mastered ( no artwork created though ) but the 7" deal fell through. Hopefully I'll get around to putting out a long delayed cd collection of the best ( if you can call it that ) of The Stupes when my workload eases up sometime in the not-to-distant future. It's nice to hear at least a few people have an interest. Bum was amazing. It was my dream to start a band that could be "Bum's little brother" that got Pez ( the first incarnation of The Stupes off the ground ). When Jamie agreed to join a new version I was very happy. I think at the end the Bum influence was starting to show up a bit, but bands that I was into at the time like MTX, the Devil Dogs, the Didjits, some of the great Australian punk stuff of the early 90's and later on Tom Bagley / Forbiddon Dimension all showed through. Jon's love of garage inspired me to come up with Hoodlum, which got us described as garage occasionally. Thanks for listening and feel free to get in touch through my work website... http://www.glenmullaly.com T. Depression - get in touch with me through my website. I'd like to get copies of the purple/ green and glossy 7"s since I've never even seen them before today. Thanks. - Mon, 6 Nov 2006 6:00pm
Rawb User Info... | Man, Glen, your art is really, really, really, really, good. Nice work on your website as well. (thanks for saying nice things about bum.) - Mon, 6 Nov 2006 11:04pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Hey Glen, whoa, NICE WORK man!!! For those who care, I managed to find the following tapes/unreleased (courtesy of Jamie)?!? Demo For Nardwuar =============== Blackout/Devilina/Defribulation/Dollhouse/Eep Opp Ork Ahha/Hoodlum/My Back (Unmixed)/Keeper (Unmixed)/Share It/What Can We Do/Missing You Missing Me/Hot Shoe Man/Brickyard Trail/Trudy-2-Time (Unmixed) The Stupes (30 mins CrO2) ==================== I Think You Stink/Chop Chop/Dead Mars Revenge/Searchlight/STOP/Slingshot/Transferd/Keeper/Lovers Leap/Black Brant/Lantzville Girl/Your Creeping Heart Can't wait to see the new CD of unreleased music. If you need help getting the CD together, let me know. I can always grab it from Jamie and get a Beta CD compiled if ya want, then get it back to Jamie (I gave him all the work I did so far). It's a shame the band didn't do much/make it big. Hopefully we'll see The Stupes giggin' in the future. BTW: Keeper sounds different on both tapes. - Tue, 7 Nov 2006 12:44pm Edited: Tue, 7 Nov 2006 12:46pm
GlenStupes User Info... | Hey Griphin, I appreciate the interest. The more I think about it the more I'm remembering that the first demo we released ( the spaceguy covered one ) was a Pez release. I'd have to search through the vaults to dig out the original art to confirm that though since I don't have of copy of the demo, just the songs from that session. The early Stupes songs were recorded before the name change so it's a bit fuzzy. Just to let you know, in case the demos got re-labeled over the years, that all the demos were just called "The Stupes" ( I think?) since I wasn't really expecting anyone to hold on to them for any length of time. I know Dave Wisdom used to play a song or two off of them occasionally on his CBC show and CFUV, CITR and other college radio stations did as well. Thanks for the offer of help on the cd. I'll let you know but as it stands I just need to work my way through it all. Besides tranferring the original mixes and the few mastered tracks from DAT I need to do a bit of work on a bunch of the songs as most were never properly mixed and mastered. The demos ( especially the last ) have horrible sound compared to the originals. I really messed up on the EQing on that last one. The cd will be a mix of released and unreleased stuff. What I think of as the best 20 or so tracks ( many of which are on your two tapes, although some are different versions ). If I'm going to do it I want it to be a half-decent job, so it may take a while fitting it in around a labour intensive career. Hopefully all this reminiscing will get a fire going. Keeper, My Back and Trudy 2-Time were rerecorded at SOS a few months after the Full Dynamic Range versions ( recorded at a Fernwood studio ) because as part of the deal the producers of that comp kept the tapes. I like the SOS versions better anyway. I know the version on the second demo was the SOS version ( with the bad EQ ) but I don't know what's on your other tape. Well, I've talked more about The Stupes in the last day than I have in the 10 years combined, so I think I should get back to work now. Thanks again! - Tue, 7 Nov 2006 3:25pm Edited: Tue, 7 Nov 2006 3:26pm
