Message Board > General Chitchat > IIHF Gold Medal Game, Canada 5 - Russia 0 |
_Griphin_ User Info... | Canada is the World Junior Champion for the second straight year. The team, which many considered to be an underdog before the tournament started, shutout a talented Russian squad, 5-0, in the golden game. The Canadians played with pure emotion and were fuelled by the sellout crowd in Vancouver. Canada jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, putting the Russians off balance. The defending champions didn't let up after gaining the early advantage, playing a hard-hitting game and adding two more goals, both power-play tallies from Michael Blunden, in the second period. Trailing 4-0 going into the third period, the Russians had little chance to overcome the emotionally charged Canadian team, which added one final goal in the last minutes of the game to seal the gold medal. It is the 12th gold for Canada at the World Junior Championship and the eighth consecutive year of winning a medal. The tournament wasn't only successful for the Canadian team, Hockey Canada reported that the attendance at this year's championship set a new record with 325,128 spectators. KILLER GAME!!! I'm stoked!!! Now if only we could do the same in men's soccer. - Fri, 6 Jan 2006 1:05pm
Brandon User Info... | Well it should have been 5-1, but dems da breaks ruskies. It was their own fault for not realizing the goal. - Fri, 6 Jan 2006 7:21pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Yes, well Gretsky did predict a 4-1 final. Actually, I blame the ref's for not catching that goal :) - Fri, 6 Jan 2006 9:35pm
ML7Mike User Info... | what a great calibre of hockey. Fast and lots of hard hitting. It was a real treat to see a couple of exhibition games at Bear Mtn. but still the intensity was nowhere near as close as that Canada vs. Russia game.. - Sat, 7 Jan 2006 3:05pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | Maybe those kids can just take over for the Canucks and get something worthwhile happening in Vacouver. It'd be easy. Just throw the uniforms on them and put 'em on the ice. No one would notice until the Canucks became unbeaten in 35 straight games. - Sat, 7 Jan 2006 3:39pm
Brandon User Info... | Well there was only one ref for that game, i think the regs need to be looked at a bit. - Sun, 8 Jan 2006 11:58am
Mofo User Info... | Kick ass game from start to finish. They played a solid game defensively and offensively, leaving the Russians to drown they're sorrows in some good ol vodka. The only bitch I have is the refereeing in the whole tournament. I mean come on that German ref the one that is a cop back home. This tool called 11 penalties in the first period alone. This is hockey not figure skating, get these Euro Trash referees out of the game - Mon, 9 Jan 2006 11:48am
