Message Board > General Chitchat > Earliest Recording of a Band in Victoria?!? |
_Griphin_ User Info... | I was always curious when the first recording of a band happened in Victoria? And you must have proof of the recording. :) The earliest recording I have is of The Exl's, recorded November 1966, and I grabbed it from RCMPSite. - Tue, 3 Jan 2006 10:47pm
Inhalien User Info... | What's bassist dude doing in the background, chin-ups? - Wed, 4 Jan 2006 8:17am
lonemonk User Info... | RCMPsite would be the one to help answer that. It might be hard to designate an all-time first though. Even that Exl's recording is basically self-produced, so obviously people had the DIY capability at that time, but who knows how widely they were distributed, if at all. I don't believe there was an LP made of that 1966 recording. It came to me on CD having been transferred directly from 7" reel, and the quality was highly variable. (There was a need even for a Tape speed adjustment on one of the tracks) I think live music was the real draw at the time. Last time they were on radio, Glenn Parfitt brought a bunch of 45's with him (or transfers of). He would probably know what the oldest piece of victoria Vinyl he has is. - Wed, 4 Jan 2006 12:57pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | This is true. Cassettes were a new technology even back then (my father had some Webcor tapes, beats me when he bought those. Which track needed a tape speed adjustment? I'm sure the speed could be fixed with WaveLab, though I dunno. I know the Exl's had won some studio time thanks to the competiton won on CFax-1070 I think. I met someone from that band at the RCMP soire (sp?) but I fergot who it was (he was short, that's all I remember, cool person to meet IMO) So I think that Exl's recording was taken from CFax. Yes, I've tried to buy some of the local 45's that came out around that time, is a piece of plastic worth $200?!? - Wed, 4 Jan 2006 1:11pm
lonemonk User Info... | I can't remember which track it was, or whether it ultimately made it on the RCMPsite or not. The boys in Exls basically just wanted listening copies. It was easy enough to fix the tape-speed in sound forge. Which soire were you at? I might have a recording of it; There was a few I didn't attend and one I didn't record. - Wed, 4 Jan 2006 4:28pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Just looking for the handout I got. RCMP presents: A Night at the Tango. Wow, talk about being out of place there. - Wed, 4 Jan 2006 10:07pm
Jeremy Baker User Info... | Griphin, you got to email me that track so I can play it on my podcast! [email protected] - Thu, 5 Jan 2006 9:49am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Which track? There were 10 released, and I do believe there all covers. You can actually find 2 of the tracks by clicking on Bands then searching for The Exl's. However, I should send you a few tracks as is... :) - Thu, 5 Jan 2006 10:44am
