What do you guys think?

I think Aulds a good goalie, this'll give him an opportunity to show what he can do. Although he doesnt have much experience in the playoffs, I think if he can pull it together in the regular season he'll do well. - Tue, 13 Dec 2005 5:23pm

Cloutier's stats for the past 2 years as a Canuck:

2001-2002: 31 22 5
2002-2003: 57 33 16

TOTAL Points NHL: 245 90 100

THATS a pretty decent record, better than any Vancouver goalie ever I think, and 2nd in the league over 3 years only to Martin Brodeur. Injury prone is his weakness.

Auld is doing not bad for a starter with little NHL experience. The team are tied for 2nd-3rd in the league all season.. where's the problem. Considering the 'nucks were bottom feeders for over a 2 decades minus the odd season here and there and are now considered one of the NHL's elite teams and still everyone complains. They have consistently beaten every top ranked team in the league this year ( Ottawa, Detroit 2 times and now NYR ) now if they can figure out Calgary and Colorado thats another story. - Wed, 14 Dec 2005 11:50am

Cloutier has THE WORST PLAYOFF STATS IN THE HISTORY OF THE NHL for any goalie with as many starts. His (very predictable) injury won me $20 buck in a bet with a friend. Hell, Pubert would make a better playoff goalie, whacka or no whacka.Next to visit the emergency room: Markus(ming vase)Naslund - Wed, 14 Dec 2005 12:41pm

Attention... Clouts only puts up good stats cause he's on a good team with probably the best defence in the league.

Just like when Raycroft won the Calder Trophy. He was a mediocre goalie on an good team (evidenced by his terrible play this year).

Auld is a good goalie. He owned Ottawa in shootouts by saving 3/4 shots. Clouts let in 3/3 against Edmonton.

No more pointless rant for me. - Wed, 14 Dec 2005 3:14pm

Damn how soon everyone forgets Ol' Captain Kirk....... McLean that is.
Thats from 91-92

His playoff record in 93-94 was kick ass when they made the final 7th game with NY

Hope to see Crawford shop for someone, though.
Yeah, Ross Bay - I heard something about Luongo. Now THAT would be sweet, and I'm sure Luongo wouldn't mind having a better team in front of him, too. - Thu, 15 Dec 2005 8:44am

Unfortunately we could only get Luongo if we traded one of our marquis players ie; Bert/Jovo..... I wouldn't be too upset to see Jovo go but still he's pretty good most of the time. I'm happy if they just stay where they're at right now as long as the winning keeps up. Too many times I've seen players get traded from Van only to have career seasons and huge success especially in the goaltending dept. - Thu, 15 Dec 2005 12:41pm

Vancouver seems to drag a lot of players down.
Must be the old toothless dominatrix in the dressing room who rewards them for winning by whipping them and forcing them to dock and be stapled.
Overall, nothing matters until a team wins The Cup. - Thu, 15 Dec 2005 5:52pm

They're kickin ass in the east. Luongo would be good but i wouldnt give up that defence. Lalime has cleared waivers, i have heard things about that, even though he hasnt seen any action for a while. In 2001 he had a 36-9-5, in 2003 39-20-7. I wonder. I say keep Auld goin. - Thu, 15 Dec 2005 7:17pm

All the Luongo talk is pretty much pointless, considering where Vancouver sits with the salary cap. They would have to get rid of some major contracts in order to absorb Luongo's salary, and find a taker for Cloutier for next year (he still has a year left on his contract, which sits somewhere around 2.5 million dollars, I think.)

While I'd love to see the Canucks win a cup, I'd rather see them play entertaining hockey and win much more often than not. Since 2001-2002, the Canucks have gone 150-86-30-11; including this season, they've only lost 35 percent of their games in that stretch.

(Admittedly, some good playoff runs would be nice, heh heh.)

And to all the Cloutier bashers: may Frank Caprice and Dunc Wilson play on yer beer league team! - Thu, 15 Dec 2005 8:45pm

Vancouver is like a "talent vacuum", look at Felix Potvin, Mark Messier, Garth Snow, etc. But besides that, we need better defense as well as better goaltending. It's apparent we can score goals based on the fact that we've got 11 in the past 2 games, so we aren't suffering offensively. Cloutier has been injured a lot by getting run by dudes from the other team and has tried to play after getting hurt. I think that he has tried to come back from injuries too soon and has never been able to be at 100%. Auld is under the microscope now which has to be stressful. These guys choke under media pressure, not to mention that Vancouver "fans" are the most fair weather I've ever seen. If the team were more consistent in their play it wouldn't be so frustrating. They will slay good teams and then get smoked by shitty teams (the old cliche - you only play as good as your competition). So if they do start shopping it has to be for a good defenseman and a decent goalie; can't just be for a goalie. Most games we are way outshot - Auld made 39 saves one game last week and those were just the saves. If we are getting shelled, it's not the goalie's fault. Most times Auld is standing on his head - seems the ones that go in are lame, but at the same time he is very inexperienced. Better defense would definitely help. - Sat, 24 Dec 2005 12:06am

I agree that Cloutier is the sketchiest guy in the world, and that it's not entirely Auld's fault. When he's getting so many shots on him he is bound to let in a couple, and yes those couple always look ridiculous. But I don't think the Canucks need a better defense. They have a fantastic defense, but they need to make smarter plays. Too many goals in the past few games have been given up by stupid plays in the defensive zone. Cross ice passes, putting it up the middle when 2 flames are right there! The canucks are so frustrating, but I still can't stop watching.

Another thing, though I think Auld is dedent, and Oullet played well in his one game, is it really wise to have 2 rookie goaltenders? And even if Cloutier comes back for the playoffs, is it wise to play him if he's been out so long? No, none of this is wise. They need a little bit more depth in net before they can go anywhere, especially come playoff time. - Mon, 26 Dec 2005 12:15pm
