Audiophil User Info... | Hey, where in Victoria or nearby can I get a reputable license or certificate to bartend? Im still young and while im in university id love to bartend for a while. Im sure its not as glamorous as people make it out to be, but still, any advice on where to go would be nice. - Sun, 27 Nov 2005 2:45pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | I'd suggest Joe the Bartenders but I dunno if there still around. Thing is, bartending is one of the hardest jobs to get, most people that become bartenders never leave there jobs. But if you get a job bartending, the best bartenders take home at least $200 a night. - Sun, 27 Nov 2005 2:46pm
Brandon User Info... | Got mine at camosun, it was 7 sundays so perfect to take while working a regular job or going to school. Joe the bartender is still around, dont know where the place is though, i heard it was around rockbay. - Sun, 27 Nov 2005 7:06pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Same here, I was in hospital when the owner was in (Arnie Hamilton), at least I think him and his wife own the company, what nice people they are. - Sun, 27 Nov 2005 7:25pm
Audiophil User Info... | Oh I understand how hard it is to actually get a bartending job, however im only 19. I have years to find a bar to work at. I dont plan to get a job at one soon, unless I get very lucky. I just know so many 25 years old that have been offered those sorts of jobs through friends and connections, to then have to say now because they werent certified. I figure if I get it now, Im good to go. Whether its here in Vic, maybe in Vancouver, or hell maybe ill split the country and go to London (england or course) and work in nice pub there. Hell even if i dont ever get a steady job with it, I know lots of people who hire bartneders for private functions all the time. Cheers for the info though, I'll check out camosun first, sounds little more professional than Joe The Bartender :p - Sun, 27 Nov 2005 10:46pm
Jesspsycho User Info... | My brother has gotten tons of bartending jobs without being liscensed. Just find the right place and start off busing or cooking. Thats what he did. Now he bartends in Lake Louise making a ton of money. - Mon, 28 Nov 2005 8:39am
Brandon User Info... | Yeah its really not like you need it or anything, it does help with the technique at first, but once you get to know your own style the rest comes natually. - Mon, 28 Nov 2005 4:15pm
Chris Logan User Info... | I own a bar and would be slightly LESS likely to hire someone with a bartending 'certificate.' I suggest you find a place you like, hang around until you've met a bunch of regulars and a few staff, and just ask for a job. You can do up a resume if you want, but I don't think we've ever hired somebody from one. It's 99% about personality and attitude (not Attitude). Hope this helps. Might just discourage you , though, I suppose. - Tue, 29 Nov 2005 9:55am
nobrain User Info... | Don't bother with the licence, go to London for a year or two and Bartending jobs will get offered to you with in 3-4 months. I got a job 'cus I happend to be standing next to the manager when he fired a girl. I'd been in the place a few times for shows, so he new my name. I started 20 mins Later, ZERO experiance. A customer had to SHOW me what was in a a gin and tonic. Yes, I was that inexperianced. Until last week, 90% of British Pubs closed at 11:30pm (12:30pm Fridays and Saturdays)at night (cuz of crazy laws left over from WW II). Yes it sucks to go out drinking, but as a Bar tender, your always in bed at a decent time, which makes keeping a "normal" job at the same time easy as fuck. Now 40% of pubs can apply for a "24 hour licence" In practice most pubs still close early during the week anyway, 'cus people are still used to drinking untill 11:00pm, and then getting kicked out. The main down sides to bar tending in the England are: 1) Tipping is not as custmery as it is in North Amercia (and the yanks think Canadians are bad :) 2) Due to the old pub closing times, most English people tend to drink as much as they can before the pub closes at 11:30Pm (12:30pm Fridays and Saturdays). This leads to way more stupidly drunk customers in bars. (Before the new 24 hour laws, 90% of bars and pubs closed at the same time. This ment that ALL of the REALLY drunk people suddenly got tossed out onto the street at the same time. Walking through the streets of London at closing time on a Friday or Saturday was INSANE. People puking and fighing all over the place in a city with really narrow streets.) Grain Fed User Info... | I was 19 when I started bartending and I never took the course. I got a bit lucky though(I started as a dishwasher at 17 and moved up. You're best bet is to get a job as a bar back or similar job. I've tended at four different bars When/if you get the barback job just pay attention to what the bartenders do and learn your drinks. Most people can figure out how to pour a beer or make a rye and coke and that's what you do for the most part. Try for a family restaurant or somewhere there isnt an age restriction, (there's usually a better staff to experiment on) and the best thing you could probably have is service/squirell or other experience. - Thu, 1 Dec 2005 11:08am
