dave User Info... | So many choices in Victoria! Where's the best place to start looking? Who has the best rates? Who has the best gear? Where do you get the most bang for your buck? Who does it for beer? Anyone have any particularly good experiences anywhere? - Fri, 21 Oct 2005 5:02am
lonemonk User Info... | Don't cheap out. Find some local recordings you like the sound of and inquire into where it was made. Check the studio listing here on Live Victoria. Phone around. Make sure you know the material you want to record inside and out, it will save you money without having to be cheap about it. I'm affiliated with the place, but I have no problem recommending Sea of Shit. Lots of choice gear, lots of experience, easy to get good results if you know what you're doing. Check the resource listings. . - Fri, 21 Oct 2005 8:25am
_Griphin_ User Info... | As usual I have to suggest Rats Nest studios. - Fri, 21 Oct 2005 10:21am
wanless User Info... | Yeah, Sea of Shit is a good studio to work in, Scott is a really good producer and knows his shit inside and out and it won't cost an arm and a leg. Here is a recording of my band, http://www.myspace.com/deadcityradiocanada We recorded that at the Sea of Shit and it was over the course of 2 days for 5 songs. - Fri, 21 Oct 2005 3:51pm
Peter Gardner User Info... | I think it should also be mentioned on what you want to accomplish. If you're looking to create something to ship around to labels and such, then obviously the studio is your answer, But if you're looking to make something to just sell at shows, and kind of just to have as a "See, this is me" type thing, Home Recording may not be a bad option. Prices for things are going down and down all the time, and getting higher and higher in quality. My .02 - Fri, 21 Oct 2005 4:11pm
brad User Info... | It helps if you know a bit of what the producer is into, and what your looking for and HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO SPEND.(no one ever mentions they recorded/mixed 15 songs in 2 days and they only paid $200 when they complain about the sound) Last time my band recorded, we took CDs of bands that we liked the sound of, and had similar production qualities that we were looking for. We talked with Scott to ensure he knew what we were going for and what we expected. ASK for SAMPLES of their recent work, and similar styles of music, and ask what THAT BAND paid for this type of quality. I've recorded with Scott @ SeaOfShit Four times now, three in the early/mid nineties, then about 6 months ago. Scott has an incredible passion for more styles of music than I even know exist, and he probably has a friggin record of it..(in quadrophic). And for some reason, for me at least..he knows how to get the best or a very good performance out of people, and isn't afraid to speak his mind, without being pushy. - Fri, 21 Oct 2005 7:02pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | I have to agree to wanless, I'm transfering old recordings ZippGunn did, such as Render Useless, from cassette tape, and Scott's recordings still sound as fresh as they did like 20+ years when they first came out. Then again, I find the same thing with recordings done at Rats Nest onto tape, such as Micky Christ-Dead or Laffing Stock and GoatBoy-Good Start Maynard... Nope! - Sat, 22 Oct 2005 9:39pm
