Message Board > General Chitchat > Marshall cabinets, difference between MG quad cabs, 1960a etc |
ScoFF User Info... | I was pricing some 4x12" Marshall cabs in the store today. There were various Marshall cabinets. I was wondering the difference between MG quad cabs ($500), Valvestate series cabinets ($600), 1960a($950) and the older JCM 800/900 Lead series cabinets. They all seemed like they were the same dimensions and were all 4x12" slant cabs. If I was wanting to just replace all 4 speakers with my own Celestion Vintage 30's would they be more or less all the same thing? Isn't the speakers the real factor in how the sound of a cab is assuming the size and shape and dimensions are the same? Is there electronics in there that might affect the sound? The type of wood perhaps. (The marshall 1936 2x12" is particle board). Please share your thoughts. - Mon, 12 Sep 2005 7:48pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Ya know, I personally am not sure. But if you were looking at it the same way you look at computer hardware, you want to try to make as many components the same, for example, if your head is a JCM800/900, go with the Lead series cabinets (JCM 800/900). I guess the heavier the wood, the better the sound. Celeston I think is what most techs usually replace damaged speakers with. - Mon, 12 Sep 2005 8:40pm

jay fatso User Info... | the wood doesnt effect the sound or tone whatssoever. - Tue, 13 Sep 2005 11:36am
Joey HiFi User Info... | Check out Celestion's web site where you can hear the difference between their speakers - pretty cool. As far as the cab - materials and size make all the difference. Why do you think those Mesa cabs are so freakin heavy? Look for something made of good ply that's well put together. I put V30's in my 1960 cab - just the sound I wanted. Way better than the stock speakers. The Greenbacks are great too - break up sooner with a great warm tone. HiFi - Tue, 13 Sep 2005 12:10pm
LSD User Info... | The more air volume inside a cabinet and type of wood "flex" makes alot of dynamic difference to your sound. Try playing through a marshall 8X12 cabinet. Tube amps will benefit with more air volume "larger cabinet" and solid state amp response better with smaller air volume. Larger cabinets will need better made speaker components, the increase in air volume allows the speakers to flex more. - Tue, 13 Sep 2005 2:25pm
cc User Info... | oops sorry i meant my cab was $1600 about 15 years ago not 25 its a mesa roadcase style cab and its loaded with EV's that have really big heavy magnets way loud and likes a powerful head to drive it anyone who carries it says WHOA man.... you have bricks in this thing or what?!! anyhow it handles all the bottom end i could want without too much speaker frap solid as fuk but mesa doesnt make em anymore i dont think oh and jay fatso .....i tend to disagree about the wood its just like with guitars heavier wood thats more dense has a different tone than guitars that are lighter....same with cabs ......different woods resonate diferently cc - Wed, 14 Sep 2005 2:08am

jackass User Info... | it's all about stiffness. A well made cabinet that has really solid joints and thick heavy wood (read: more mass) will have a low natural frequency. Exactly right about different woods resonating at different frequencies, because they have different masses/stiffnesses. - Wed, 14 Sep 2005 12:33pm
Robnoxious User Info... | I have a couple of the 2x12 stereo cabs and find they have more midrange beef than the full size 4x12 cab. Also easier on the back. - Wed, 14 Sep 2005 2:52pm
