It's that time of year again...
I need to lose some split ends and re-new my do.
I usually end up going to a different place everytime but I was wondering if any of the gals out there have some feedback I could use before venturing out with my credit card.

I want to find a good pro that understands how my hair operates. Then maybe I'll stick with one hairdresser. - Wed, 27 Apr 2005 12:48pm

BEST HAIRDRESSER EVER! Bernie, at 'Wiink' on johnson, right across fron the entrance to market square. She can do anything, it's an Aveda Salon, and she has cool hair herself, so you know shes got good taste.... and a bonus, she wont put any 'i know better than you' twist on it like many hairdressers, she follows your directions, but on that note, a rad sense of creativity and can do amazing things with short hair. Scalp massages are a must. Cuts $48 + tax or so. Good prices on color for an aveda salon. - Wed, 27 Apr 2005 7:20pm

Wow!! Thanks everyone for your feedback...

Bryn - Great suggestion!! You've always been a smartie pants:)

Ok everyone send in some pics!!

I've seen Princess P's new do and I gotta say...nice one!!

That's what I'm looking for, someone who can look at my current mess and say "Oh no you've got it all wrong your hair/face needs THIS"

I've been kinda leaning towards the Hipe, but now I'm thinking that there is more research to do.
For some reason every cheap place I've gone to decides that my hair should be feathered. *shudders*

I've got long ass hair but I want some good layers/style and MAYBE some highlights. Maybe. I'm all about the natural shit so an Aveda salon seems the way to go too. Is Hipe not an aveda salon?

Bangs or no bangs... I can never decide. - Thu, 28 Apr 2005 11:30pm

I've got really long hair too and the only advice i can give you is don't let any chick with hair shorter then her shoulders take scissors to yours. Speaking from experience here. And don't let your boyfriend dye your hair. I know, who the hell would do that? I have cherry red streaks in odd places right now.It was a REALLY bad idea haha - Fri, 29 Apr 2005 8:43am

...never, ever, whatever you do, ever go to chatters salon, I had shoulder length hair and wanted it cut a bit shorter in the back so it would fall forward and i wanted bangs, I ended up getting all my hair hacked up in the back to about 2 inches, then she cut the front all uneven and didn't give me bangs....and after all that she had the nerve to tell me that it was what all the girls were doing now, I seriously have never come closer to slashing somebodys throat before that moment....she basically gave me the same haircut as adam sandler in little nicky! It took about a year and a wicked cut from dave at fish to fix it! The moral of the story: go to dave at fish!!!! - Fri, 29 Apr 2005 11:13am

I swear I have been the queen of bad haircuts... I've been to so many salons that can't even cut the hair the same length on either side... I won't mention names as I think they already have been mentioned.

I ended up going to see Dave at Bella Moda in Hillside- he's an old friend, and not only did he do a great job, we had a lot of fun while he was cutting.

Just my 2 cents - Fri, 29 Apr 2005 1:22pm

maybe yur head is lopsided. they have little to work with to make you look even on both sides. to give an illusion of left/right evenness takes a true sculpt hairdresser. - Fri, 29 Apr 2005 4:00pm

if you've been to alot of places, and had alot of shitty haircuts, id be willing to bet my life, you've been going to cheap places. haircuts are like any other skilled trade, you get what you pay for!!! go to a shitty place, and you're going to get someone who eithor has no ambition in thier career, and is satisfied working a supercuts clone, or simply someone who didn't spend too much on their training, and therefor has no real desire to make that money back.

if you go to an aveda salon, at least some members of the staff are going to have trained at the Paul Da Costa Institute, which cost about eleven grand when everything is said and done. not some 'on the side, how-to' thing.

and yes, natural yet chic is defenitly an Aveda concept. I stand by my reccomendation of Bernie Blades at Wiink, which is an Aveda Salon. (on johnson Across from market square.

OH! if you're going for color, expecially subtle natural tones, Aveda is the way to go, seeing as aveda dye's are plant derrivatives, not ammonia based peroxide bleaches. less harsh on your hair, and tend to come out looking a little more natural, so theyre less intense looking when your roots start to come out. the end! - Fri, 29 Apr 2005 6:49pm

Oh trust me Nat, if I let my bf do anything to my hair I'd probably end up with a multicolored tri-hawk or a mullet. I bleach and shave his "do" and then I use his conditioner that comes with the bleach!!

Ya I figure I'm going to do this in the next few weeks so maybe I'll do a before and after pic to post and ya'll can be the judges:) - Sat, 30 Apr 2005 8:04pm

"if you've been to alot of places, and had alot of shitty haircuts, id be willing to bet my life, you've been going to cheap places. haircuts are like any other skilled trade, you get what you pay for!!!"

Well actually I spent $35-$40 at one place for a trim and came out with a completely new style... worst thing was that the dude had the chair turned away from the mirror so I didn't know what it looked like until it was done. and the whole time he was talking about how awesome his band is and how they're gonna be bigger than the rolling stones... blah!

I paid $50 at another place believing your story of you get what you pay for and the person didn't even listen to what I wanted they just cut it and was like "oh well this is the new style" which was totally different from what I wanted- NOT COOL!

Sure I get my haircut like once a year, but if I go to a real salon, I expect a real haircut...

I've actually found that I've had better luck getting a decent cut at the less expensive places (in fact hair schools are great b/c they want you to be happy so that they can get a good grade!)

now I'm not a hairdresser and I certainly don't go to one very often, but if the hair obviously looks like 2 different lengths on either side, it's time to rethink your career. - Sat, 30 Apr 2005 8:37pm

I used to get the Aveda student cuts, but I was usually helping a friend out. I went to a "salon" in Canwest Mall a while back and the chick practically ripped out most of my hair just for a trim then charged me $45!!

I can't beleive the guy had you not facing the mirror. That's a big ol' bad sign. - Sun, 1 May 2005 3:37am

Well due to the unfortunate circumstance of having to put one of our cats down I just didn't get into the whole before/after pics. But I did keep my appointmment with Bernie at Wiink.
I'm very happy with my hair. She did an excellent job. It is just a trim but I've been disappointed by almost all my previous trims so this is great. She relaxed me with a scalp massage and didn't try to do anything I wasn't in to. I even bought some expensive conditioner.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions but I think I'm going to be happy with Bernie. Reason I chose her? It's an Aveda salon and she had the coolest name:) - Fri, 6 May 2005 2:21pm

I didn't think she knew about it already...sorry I didn't mention it. I'll definetly be going back to her though.

Get her to look at the site (if she hasn't already). I was her noon appointment that didn't talk much b/c she was sad over previously mentioned cat. The haircut did take my mind off him a bit.

To all those seeking new hair dressers at least check out this chick. She's good. *admires hair* - Fri, 6 May 2005 11:44pm

yeah sorry - i guess you probably wouldn't dig it unless brush cuts become the trend for the young and hip women of the world. my wife won't go there either - i don't know where she goes, but i do know that the price tag generally sits between the $120-$140 mark. it always looks good, but i mean shit, five or six of those haircuts is the equivalent of half decent guitar!

anyway, jimmy's doesn't have any expensive conditioners, save for the bottles of blue disinfectant that they soak their combs in. however, the top of my head (which suffers no folicular protection from the sun) seems to tan a very deep and rich shade of brown after having gone to jimmy's - even in a snow storm in the dead of winter . my theory is that they throw a small amout of olive oil into their water spray guns. those greek barbers think of everything. - Tue, 10 May 2005 1:43pm
