I don't dare accuse anyone of shopping at Complex, but maybe you have the misfortune of being related to someone who works there? ... do us a favor and pass along the message. Perhaps, you should consider the thought, that running a retail store would warrant some common decency towards customers.
This weekend several kids walked into the store, and were looking at 'dew rags'. For some reason, the rags were being kept under glass, and the kids seemed amused by this. A guy working at the store noticed them, walked over to them and asked 'Are you racist?', in what was more than a slightly standoffish tone. Ironically, both the kids and the employee were white, indicating a level of intellectualism rarely observed.
The young boy who was confronted by the employee decided to leave the store, leaving his two female companions inside to shop. One of the girls was looking at clothes when the same employee approcahed her and stated, "Maybe if it had Avril Lavinge on it, you'd like it better."

Maybe im alone in this, but the kids were my little sister's friends, and it pisses me off that someone would treat anyone like that, especially in a workplace setting, not to mention the fact that the two girls were prospective customers.

Next time you need a Dew Rag, aside from getting your head examined, buy it somewhere else. - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 10:47am

Pffft, doesn't matter. In most 'customer service' industries, you're paid to take it, not dish it out.

Well, with the exception of restaurants which are known specifically for their snooty service and that's the deal. - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 4:33pm

The reason I can think of for the dew rags being secured by being behind glass is theft. They may not be worth much money but if they all get stolen the make no money. The rate of theft in retail stores is insane. Dew rags are very easy to grab and pocket, and are popular with kids that think they are in gangs.

I’m not sure why the racist comment, but I as others that work in retail stores really dislike teenagers, their loud, obnoxious, they steal, they rarely have money and are mouthy. You always have to watch them close because they come in groups and cause distraction so their friends can steal.

And NO we are not paid to take it. You get mouthy I’ll ask you to leave. I have and I will do it again. - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 4:53pm

Wig, you are soooo hardcore ! LOL!

Hey, I'm a old fuck and I've had the experience of being profiled in stores just because I have long hair and look a criminal to some. Mayfair Mall smoke shop run by a lovely Chinese fellow snatched a flask from my beautiful ladies hands when we were looking for a gift for her birthday . Was all ready to by one no matter what the price ( we both have very good jobs , like that should matter), she always wanted one and he grabbed it right out of her hands and when I asked what the fuck that was all about he told me I couldn't afford it. Fucking ( racist comment) I guess judged my Lady and I by our looks , Now I could’ve judged him by the way he looked , except that’s not my thing . I've had it happen numerous times in all sorts of ways . Once I was trying to buy motorcycle gloves for a friend plus a mirror for my bike and when I asked about the mirrors I guess they thought I was a shrub and told me to go to Canadian Tire and then had a good laugh. Them I asked about the gloves and they pointed at a case and preceded to help the person who just walked through the door . So I looked through the glass but couldn’t get a idea what size they were so I waited patiently looking at the counter people and seeing they weren't going to help I scooted around, opened up the case and was trying them on my hand (being my buds hands were almost the size of mine) .After a few seconds the guy bellows out “get the fuck out from behind there” and at that point I chucked the gloves at him and said that the hell you weren't helping me and he said that he knew I wasn't going to buy anything . So fuck your judging what the kids said or did, you weren't fucking there ! Yea every kid is a thief just like every Scott is cheap , every Asian will rip you off , every Arab is a terrorist.
I really get sick of people defending BAD sales people . A good sales person would ask if they need help and be there to stop the opportunity to steal and in turn come across like they want to help you . Instead of jerks who take one look at you and have their mind made up on you . - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 7:00pm

I run a business downtown, and most of my customers are teenagers and so far I've had no theft problems. Most teens are excellent, sometimes they don’t have much money, but when they’re in your store you should still treat them as good customers. I think the reason why some teens appear to be mouthy, obnoxious and out to steal everything *from the moment they walk into the store* is because they are treated as thieves *from the moment they walk into the store.* It gets irritating to them, so they speak out and get mouthy. I don’t blame them really. Treat them like sane human beings, and they will act like sane human beings. This goes for everyone– not just teens. I’m not saying absolutely no teens steal, sure some do, some old ladies steal too, but sales people usually aren’t so obviously rude to them now are they?
Like XY-Satan said…just don’t judge people. From my experience the people who you think are most likely to steal are usually not the ones doing the stealing. - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 8:37pm

It never fails to blow me away how many people in stores think their products are so "elite" that they can afford to be rude to customers. For instance, there is a record shop on Johnson that has missed out on hundreds of dollars of my business over the years because one of their employees decided that it would be a good idea to make fun of the cds I was just about to fork over my hard-earned money for.
Speaking as someone who has enjoyed a long standing career in retail sales, the best formula for a lucrative shop with little theft is speak to every customer with respect and be genuinely happy they have chosen to come in and give you their business. If you don't truly enjoy being around people of all kinds, you will have a tough way to go in the retail industry. - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 9:48pm

Speaking of dumbass people running buisnesses, I took my lovely lady and my daughter down to the free concert in front of the Parliment Buildings on Sunday . Sun, rock and roll and a little thong and navel gazing. When the band took a break we went for a dog at a booth right next to Milestones (or over from). First thing there's two guys standing in front smoking a cig just like me . So as I walk to the front of the booth one guy says " man, never fails, right when you're having a smoke" stomps out his butt, (mind you, I had no idea he was working there )walks around, we joke with him and his bud about it, yea know "the bus always comes... blah blah..." .

Then he tells us he's had no customers .

That's funny !

Then he is vague about whathafuk dogs he was selling. When I went looking for the cond's he pipes up " don't go that way unless you want cream and sugar on that dog". Would've been nice if he just said the shit's that way, but no big deal. We joked a little about it... This is about when the band started up again and this guy's got the gaul to say "Oh shit, here they go again, this music sucks! My lady told him the audience were enjoying the live music. It did sound better up close, not across the water! He said "yeah, they probably all smoked up over there that's why they like this shit!"

Quick note - the people sitting around the fountain and on the grass, some in there 70s, others in their teens and a good cross section in between, old Asian tourists sauntering around having a Yee Olde Time, about 40 people in total. No pot smoking (damb!)

Pretty well everything out of his mouth was negative on every aspect of the music, the people etc, etc. No hope for this guy... time to walk away.

We did! We went back and enjoyed the rest of the show. - Mon, 11 Apr 2005 10:10pm

It's a rag used by ancient desert wanderers to collect dew at night to have drinking water and survive the heat.

Or

It's a 'do rag, which would probably be short for a "hairdo", and might be a piece of cloth that you could tie around your "hairdo" so you look like those hippy-hop people like Two-pack and Snoopy Doopy Dog.

Dear Wig, does Wig stand for Wigger? that's beside the point, but im going to stand up for the little kids. No, they are NOT mouthy, in fact quite the opposite, they are small and quiet. Im not quite sure why you took the time to explain that Dew Rags get stolen alot, but that realy has nothing to do with the tone of this thread. I am simply slamming a store that treated some kids like shit, in a place where i know people are going to see it, and hopefully, this instance of poor conduct reflects negativly on the business. I also strongly agree, that if you are treated like a hassle, you are going to BE a hassle.

I should probably add, that if you were betting on these kids giving attitude, cough cough [+}, then you would be out some money. As stated, this was uncalled for and appaling 'customer service', otherwise would not have taken the time to type it all out.

If you cant handle working in retail, as some people in this forum clearly can't, then do somthing that doesn't involve working with people. Let's face it, if you can talk and ring sales through, you can work in retail. It's no great feat to get a retail job. And god knows its not a tough job. So what if you deal with some shitty little pukes sometimes? I'm wiling to bet you encounter people like that EVERYWHERE, and usually you wont be getting paid. have some decency, reflect well on your business. - Tue, 12 Apr 2005 1:38pm

cough cough erika.
are you actually saying that an employee noticed some teenagers looking at pieces of cloth and asked them "are you racist". let's just back that up for a second.

take it from someone who knows, getting involved with talking down someone on here has ramifications, whether or not what you are saying is true or false. so why would you make it your mission to stand up for someone who's your ..sisters ..friend?

i think the story was distorted somewhat along the way; half-truths and such. - Wed, 13 Apr 2005 7:15pm

im dead serious. this is getting silly, i dont really care if you believe me or not, but take a minute to wonder why i would bother to post a thread on this event if i was just trying to stir somthing up. i've never posted stupid gossipy comments on this site, and you won't see me doing it. the employee ACTUALLY approached the kids and hassled them, and it was completly inappropriate. thats all im saying. it was a bad thing to be done, and i felt compelled to repeat the story becuase i feel bad for the kids, and hopefully someone will read this over, and realise that when you offer terrible customer service in your workplace, people will notice.

people check restaurants 'sanitation reports'. hotels get a 'star' rating. this is my small insignificant way of rating that store, based soley on one incident. im not asking you to agree, im glad people have posted replies to the effect of differing points of view regarding 'the customer is always right'. im just trying to keep the story stright.

ps... who am i talking down other than the store? i somehow doubt i will suffer ramifications from expressing a point of view from a potential customer's prespective, but it worries me that i am recieving a warning... care to clarify?

pps, i completly agree with whoever that was who posted .. "I don't want people like that back in my buisness and either did my boss."
thats great and im glad you had the choice as to who you served. when you work in retail in a small location of a chain of large stores, however, you do not have the luxury of having your boss okay your choices pertaining to how you treat customers. if you can't take shit from customers, and accept that 'the customer is always right', you will get fired, plain and simple. if the direction your business takes on sales, happens to be the all-too-common, 'takeover the world, one cheap piece of clothing at a time', you learn to take shit, or get another job. - Thu, 14 Apr 2005 5:34pm

My man and I went out to the 4 mile last summer and ended up walking out after being rudely treated. He says that he's used to being treated badly based on his appearance. Nobody should be used to that.

We were dressed nice and acting very polite but I overheard the two snotty servers talk about how neither of them wanted to take our table (their loss as we are great tippers) they put a jug of water on our table "to start us off" ignored us for 10 mins then proceeded to ask the table of three who had just been sat "is there anything I can get for you from the bar?" That's when we stood up and walked out.
I used to work in a fine dining restaurant as a server and I have never seen such unprofessionalism. I have served bikers with the same respect (just different jokes) as little old ladies in for afternoon tea. I'm not a judgemental person though.

Moral of my story: boycott the 4 mile restaurant. - Thu, 5 May 2005 8:36pm

dumpstermesh: I've encountered service issues at the 4-mile too. I'm not gonna go into the details, but I was certainly discouraged from returning. Too bad, considering the joint is what I call one of those 'get a lotta bang fer yer buck' kinda places where they serve heap-loads (nachos, for example) for very reasonable prices. - Thu, 5 May 2005 9:54pm
