Anonymous User Info... | When metropol first started postering downtown it was awesome because instead of seeing every pole covered with the same 10 crappy posters, there was a variety... Poster poles became relevant, and I actually started looking at them to find out what was going on. Plus, Metropol Steve is a cool/fair guy. But recently all I see are strip club advertisements. What the fuck? I consider that not only a shame, but an abuse of a public resource. Music events deserve cheap public advertisement because they help the cultural community flourish, and they almost never make enough money to be able to advertise any other way. Strip clubs or wet t-shirt contests or whatever and any other commercial venture should be left off the poles (yes, strippers, poles... very punny). So seriously, what gives? - Fri, 25 Mar 2005 10:34pm
The One After Two User Info... | I know that sucks and it does look sleezy but you got to think who is wandering the streets of downtown Victoria (other than skids and junkies). American tourists. What do they want to see? Sexy Canadian muff b/c in their puritan world, going to see some strippers can be a challenge, but luckily in godless Canada, its all good. Just tear them down when you walk by them and set free the public space. - Sat, 26 Mar 2005 12:57am
Metropol Steve User Info... | The problem lies in the definition of what is an event. We have always labored to keep the postering event based and it's often difficult to make the call. I can assure you that we turn away an insane amount of business in order to maintain the integrity of the poles. Everything we put up is for a local, dated event that is somehow related to the arts. Does a strip show qualify? Who makes the distinction? We originally took on the Monty's contract over a year ago and have been putting up exactly the same amount of Monty's posters every week since. We originally pursued the contract simply because if we did it, it would cease to be a problem for us. (Remember how Monty's used to poster?) This week we ran some posters for the Fox's nudie contest. This one is in a gray area as well, but it was put on by a friend who is a great client when we poster for his band. It also met our criteria so the postering was done. We put up 1000 posters a day. Yesterday, 75 of those were for strip clubs. The other 925 were for 69 other events that we currently advertising. The thing about postering is you can never fully maintain it. There's always someone postering aggressively, the west-coast weather, the ebb and flow of events and the 500 drunk people trashing our work at 2am. You may not always agree with every poster that gets into our rotation and we may not either. The important thing for us is to maintain an accessible, fair and reasonably priced poster system, seven days a week. If you like gigposters as much as we do, check out the Metropolitan. We put an awful lot of work into it every week - you may find a new place to find the free event advertising that you are looking for. And we promise - no strip club posters. for the love of User Info... | regardless of what philosophically qualifies as an event or whatever, you've got some disinterested lookers here. I know that for myself, the poles have become less of an immediate resource, and that's definitely partly due to the fact that I'm not very captivated by the prospect of a "double duo". I guess it does get complicated, however, if is a matter of them postering whether or not you facilitate it. it just kind of sucks that they're taking up that good potential space of information. And an aside: it doesn't even seem like a very lucrative project for Montys to poster anyway. what kind of stripbar patron cares which specific theme night they come on? and if they do, then they're probably so down that they don't need the posters to tell them. I agree with the first post here, generally the priority should be: more to the bands, less to the bars. I guess metropol probably knows this already, but, well, keeps you on your toes, or something, don't it. - Sun, 27 Mar 2005 1:57am
