jay brown User Info... | Author Hunter S. Thompson Kills Himself By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: February 21, 2005 DENVER (AP) -- Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of fictional journalism in books like ``Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,'' fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67. - Sun, 20 Feb 2005 11:19pm
Bryn User Info... | RIP, Dr. Thompson. One of the most original and unique writers of all time. It would have been a more boring world if he hadn't been around. - Sun, 20 Feb 2005 11:21pm

davescene User Info... | Fairly pissed off now...Can't figure out why he did it, either. Maybe he was terminal...I still wanted to meet the guy and blow stuff up with him. - Mon, 21 Feb 2005 8:43am
_Griphin_ User Info... | What the fuck?!? Yep, even CNN wrote a huge article on it: http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/books/02/21/thompson.obit/index.html, man that fuckin' sucks. Was wierd cause last week I was trying to explain who Thompson was to my mom when we saw his books at Bolen in Hillside mall. - Mon, 21 Feb 2005 9:07am
PCreaper User Info... | I think your right Davescene....I was talking with friends about this last night and thats exactly what we came up with. - Mon, 21 Feb 2005 1:48pm
Wig User Info... | well you know he did like to get all fucked up, maybe it was a drug induced accident... i'd fell better if it happened that way. - Mon, 21 Feb 2005 3:18pm
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | perhaps the drugs and alcohol weren't killing the pain of the illness anymore. Lord knows he loved his guns as much as his drugs & booze. Fitting enough way to do it I suppose. I think it's time to re read some classics. rip - Mon, 21 Feb 2005 10:06pm
Davescene User Info... | Well I'm not sure what else it could be? Either he had a terminal disease (see Cancer or Depression problems), or had an accident. He was closer to his wife/girlfriend than ever, still had his TSN column and was toying with his Shotgun Golfing idea with Bill Murray. He lived the life a lot of us would love, rampant drug and alcohol abuse, writing whatever he wanted, vacationing whenever and wherever he wanted, weaponry of all manner, and most importantly, blowing shite up. Sounds great to me... - Tue, 22 Feb 2005 8:46am
gene User Info... | i think that kids these days could learn a lot from the work of HST. not that rampant drug abuse and criminal behavior is acceptable (which it clearly is) but that if you spend a little time paying attention to whats happening in the world it'll give you a good reason to want to abuse drugs and alcohol to escape reality. "don't take any guff from these swine" "he who makes a beast of himself, rids himself of the burden of being man" - Tue, 22 Feb 2005 11:47am
dumpstermesh User Info... | When I told a friend of mine that he shot himself in the head all she said was "he didn't like his family very much." Think about it though... how much can you like the people you are forcing to clean that mess up?? - Tue, 22 Feb 2005 12:03pm
Wig User Info... | i really don't think the family is cleaning up the mess, thats the coroners job, then you hire someone to clean the rest up. besides know one knows what really happen yet anyways. did he shoot his foot and bleed to death or did he sink one in his melon. - Tue, 22 Feb 2005 12:23pm
Masturbating The War God User Info... | there was this thing on the news showing how he spent his 'quality time' in his place in CO, sitting around in his bathrobe shooting guns. Great author, journalist/whatever. - Tue, 22 Feb 2005 5:47pm
lonemonk User Info... | My suspicion is that the family was somewhat aware, I only have a few snippits to go on, The family did indicate they would be making a statement once the loss lessens a bit. Hunter is no namby-pamby suicide artist. Its possible he had a depressive disposition sometimes (many writers do), but I certainly want to believe that his motives were that he was told in no uncertain terms that his life was jeopardized by serious health complications. Certainly no stretch of the imagination considering his lifestyle. (Most obvious is 55+ years of chain-smoking) http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/nyc-dugg0222,0,285170.column?coll=ny-nynews-headlines Exerpt: --------------------------------- (Novelist William) Kennedy said he got a call from Thompson two weeks ago, complaining about unspecified pains. Yesterday, Kennedy talked to Thompson's son, Juan. "He said that his father wanted a church funeral and he had asked that his ashes be shot out of a cannon," Kennedy said. ------------------------------ It really does feel awkward to know the man aint around. He's much like Keith Richards in that respect. When you consider his mortality, you think why now? Both men should have been dead years ago. I wrote a letter to him years ago, but never sent it. Now of course, I wish I had; Isn't that always the way. Go now and buy a copy of Breakfast with Hunter before they run out. I got mine for Xmas, no Hunter fan should be without. _Griphin_ User Info... | Methinks the drug use turned him depressive. - Tue, 22 Feb 2005 9:32pm
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | Yes, suicide does indeed suck, but you have to admit that HST went out exactly how he lived his life ON HIS TERMS Doctor, you will be sorely missed. - Tue, 22 Feb 2005 10:52pm
lonemonk User Info... | You're right Ty, there's no way HST would accept someone else's timeline. I can't say I'm surprised at the method used, this seems natural for him. Griph: HSTs drug use, while legendary, was also regularly exagerated; I have clips of the man saying so himself. Often the reference to heavy drug use were used to fuel the writings and provide a form of comic relief that he is well known for. He had tremendous control over his literary image, and because the writings were so far out, he was able to blur the line entirely between Raoul Duke and Hunter Thompson. There is little doubt about serious scotch consumption, lots of weed and the ever-present cigarette. As I mentioned, I cannot believe it was brought on by mental-illness alone. There is only one book that I don't own by the man. Anyone have a copy of The Curse of Lono? . . - Wed, 23 Feb 2005 7:48am

davescene User Info... | Okay, so he shot himself while he was talking to his wife on the phone. Unfortunately for his son and daughter-in-law, they were in the house when he did it and had been talking about it for months. Ernest Borg Nine User Info... | I think Ty nailed it.... Motherfucker did it for his own reasons, and I can't think of a better way for him to go..... Fuck it, this is KnifeGhost, I'm just on Enrst's computer.... I hate the internet..... - Fri, 4 Mar 2005 12:22am
ODIN User Info... | That conspiracy is very interesting and it would only give me another reason to kill bush. The beedy eyed piece of shit red neck... Maybe if you combine the conspiracy and Ty ideas... Hunter killed himself so "they" couldn't get to him first. Instead of getting gun downed like a dog he decided to kill himself so he would die on his own terms and not "theirs"... just an idea. - Sat, 5 Mar 2005 6:54pm
SickFuk User Info... | Another possibility is that he was simply sick of life.... you gotta admit, the man lived a dozen lifetimes crammed in to one... At least his name is one that will never be forgotten... people will be making refernces to him in books, movies, TV, watercooler discussions, message boards..:), etc etc.... he'll never really die, he left way too deep an indent in many a memory... the only people who truely die are the forgotten...
