The Wolf User Info... | Palestinian officials have said that Arafat is suffering from a blood disorder, but they have repeatedly denied reports that he has leukemia. OK HE HAS AIDS... According to Clinton they had a peace solution worked out where the PLO got pretty much everything they wanted but Arafat was a little "loopy" and said No..maybe they can get back on track now.. Probably more likely to Fight over the Billions of dollars he has brought in first ... - Thu, 4 Nov 2004 9:55am

lonemonk User Info... | Arafat leaving will be disastrous. He is the only Palestinian to have developed a rapport with the rest of the world. No individual speaks louder for the Palestinian cause; without him the PLO will have nothing but violent means, and the Isrealis have been waiting a long time for this opportunity. Following the non-existence of Arafat will be a vacuum which clogs VERY quickly! Just to complicate things in a way that only the USA can, the Gaza strip AND Iran is likely to be forceably opened to free-enterprise not long after Iraq is considered liberated. The CBC and CNN have nothing to worry about next year. - Sat, 6 Nov 2004 1:06am
DOOMHAMMER User Info... | If arafat dies, the palestinians will be even more abused than they currently are. Ive been paying attention, Arafat is most likely dead. He is only being kept alive by machine, there were reports of 'brain dead' that turned into 'coma' but I seriously doubt its that optimistic. They call it reversable, but thats only because a miracle is always possible, therefore not a lie, and I say by nov 10th we hear he's dead. - Sat, 6 Nov 2004 3:42am
Mi*coll* User Info... | here's my take: Arafat is a FUCKER, and crazy. most palestinians want his corrupt ass gone. as far as i can tell, peace could never be achieved while he in in charge (which is not to say that sharon is anything less than a fuck himself). that being said, the power vacuum that would remain in the case of his death (and he's definitely dying, folks) could be dangerous. it does appear, though, that this guy Mahmoud Abbas has a good chance of succeeding him: according to New York Times: "Now Mr. Arafat is in a coma and apparently on his deathbed - his condition on Saturday reported unchanged - and Mr. Abbas, who is also known as Abu Mazen, is moving into the driver's seat. He is placing the current prime minister, Ahmed Qurei, or Abu Ala, next to him. It will be an enormous test for both, but it is Mr. Abbas, 69, who will be the most visible Palestinian leader - and the one with the most clout, once he takes over, as expected, as the chairman of the P.L.O. and Fatah, its largest faction." he seems like a pragmatic guy. lets all cross our fingers. - Sat, 6 Nov 2004 12:39pm
Audiophil User Info... | No Mi*coll, you're wrong. The palestinian dont want Arafat gone at all. You need to read up on his life and what his lasting legacy has done for the Palestinian cause. While his legacy is highlighted with violence, he's also united the people of Palestine when they easily could've disapeared amidst the decades of war with israel. He's been just as active in the peace process as Israel PM's over the past decadees have been. When he dies, unless something is sorted uot now, we could witness a violent struggle for power. There's no doubt in my mind that he's done. Even if he does manage to pull out of the coma, he's being reported as having dimensia, and is no longer suitable to run the "country". The end of an era is before us, and for anyone who follows this sad cycle of violence, you're witnessing something pretty spectacular. - Sat, 6 Nov 2004 3:43pm
Mi*coll* User Info... | Yeah, you could be right, but i have heard otherwise. Just googling, i found: http://www.mediareviewnet.com/hamas%20passes%20fatah%20in%20popular%20support%20poll.htm which suggests that in an election, arafat's fatah would recieve only 27.1% (compared to *shudder* hamas, that would get around 30%). http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1692136.stm from 2001, this argues that support has been as low as 20% for the PLO under Arafat. But whether or not the Palestinians support(ed) Arafat, i think that he has impeeded any progress toward peace (admittedly, so has Sharon). I think that with arafat gone, the prospects for peace are, over the long-term, improved (if someone would just take out sharon). - Sun, 7 Nov 2004 12:56pm
