Message Board > General Chitchat > Lack of venues that will hold weekend shows |
Above the knee User Info... | Has anyone noticed a major (downwards) shift in the amount of venues that are now putting on Fri/Sat shows? Does anyone know of any non all age venues that are still up for live music on the weekends (local bands.. not some all star act)? Maybe I'm wrong here? - Fri, 28 Jan 2011 2:04pm
Jl User Info... | logans, vic events centre, rehab... 2 of those venues have shows tonite... I do hear you though; there is a bit of a lacking for a saturday night show... but in all fairness, friday night is just as good :) Probably sounds like a broken record, but the bars need to make money too... sometimes locals bands dont bring out the draw that they promise and the club ends up losing money on the night because they had to give the door to the bands... A different pay scheme might help; like what Rehab does... you sell as many presale tickets as you can, keep that money and then what ever strolls through the door goes to the club... at least that way, there's a little more money in it for the bar(not much; but its a start) - Fri, 28 Jan 2011 2:20pm
Anchor User Info... | Its a little out of the way, but the Crofton Hotels puts on shows on the weekends, I think the booking is done by the Duncan Garage Showroom. If you can get 30 people to show up they would be thrilled! - Fri, 28 Jan 2011 2:28pm Edited: Fri, 28 Jan 2011 2:28pm
sumyungai User Info... | Felicita's at UVic. Not all ages, but a great 400+ seat venue. Or try booking Vertigo... - Sun, 30 Jan 2011 4:07pm
atrocity_exhibition User Info... | Fort Cafe does Saturday night shows, V-Lounge does Friday night shows (or did as recently as December, I heard maybe they were moving all band shows to Thurs nights) but yeah, there's definitely a lack. Good luck with Felicita's. If you haven't won their stupid battle of the bands they won't give you the time of day. - Mon, 31 Jan 2011 6:19pm
atrocity_exhibition User Info... | Cambie in Esq. will book bands on a Friday from time to time too. Same with the Cambie in Nanaimo. - Mon, 31 Jan 2011 6:22pm
Above the knee User Info... | V-Lounge, Logan's, Rehab, Lucky all APPEAR to be out of the question from now on (I could be wrong) if we are talking about the metal genre (which is what I play). There are shows going on now but future bookings are very difficult. As for most of the other venues, they are not the type that would accommodate my type of music (once again.. could be wrong). Vertigo is an intriguing suggestion though! - Mon, 31 Jan 2011 11:00pm
Jl User Info... | alternatively, you could just go on tour... as for weekend shows here for metal bands; try Logan's... or you could also book a space yourselves and put on a show*(V.E.C., Sugar, Esq. Legion all come to mind; granted sugar is quite expensive for the average band to book... VEC is pretty reasonable, as is the Esq. Legion) - Tue, 1 Feb 2011 11:17am
Above the knee User Info... | Well we're ahead of you on the tour thing haha. May! I'll check into the legion. I think the VEC is only reasonable during the week. Once you hit the weekend the price basically doubles haha... but i guess it's an option. Thanks! - Tue, 1 Feb 2011 3:02pm
Anchor User Info... | Just to follow up on the Crofton Hotel, they had a sign up last weekend looking for bands. They have had everything from gypsy punk to johnny winter to hip hop. http://croftonhotel.ca/ - Tue, 1 Feb 2011 5:55pm
Crux User Info... | I am a part of a group in victoria right now that is organised and working to open an all ages venue in town. We are currently scouting locations and fund raising. If you are so inclined you can visit the link below to donate either money or time and ask any questions about whats happening at any time. http://vihc.net/donate.html - Tue, 1 Feb 2011 8:22pm
Above the knee User Info... | Okay so here is some of the stuff that I've found for anyone who has been curious about putting on a weekend show: Ambrosia Center is around 900-1000$ to rent the two combined rooms on the weekend. Vic Events Center is about the same (closer to 1000$) Vertigo is over 2000$ for a non all age show and about 1600$ for an all ager Still waiting to hear from the Esq. Legion... - Thu, 3 Feb 2011 10:05am
sumyungai User Info... | $2000 for Vertigo without a P.A.? Are they nuts? I had no idea... BTW... We've had quite a bit of hardcore up at Felicita's recently. Seems to go down quite well really. - Thu, 3 Feb 2011 1:06pm Edited: Thu, 3 Feb 2011 1:19pm
Above the knee User Info... | Yup, I had someone send me a full spreadsheet for the breakdown of costs and a PA is not among the things included. It is 1650 to rent and 500 on top of that for the bar set up. I also saw some hardcore at Felicitas recently.. I think it was a battle of the bands... something to think about I guess. We will likely need a larger sized space to pull off what I have in mind. I still have my fingers crossed for the Legion. - Thu, 3 Feb 2011 1:43pm
atrocity_exhibition User Info... | You could try the Isabelle Reader Theatre in Langford too. - Thu, 3 Feb 2011 9:05pm
Above the knee User Info... | Thanks for the suggestion. I know it sounds picky, but I'd prefer something not so far out of the way. I was thinking Norway place would be worth looking into but then we would also have to rent a lot of extra sound equipment. - Fri, 4 Feb 2011 8:51am
atrocity_exhibition User Info... | How about ummm Burnside Community School? Metro Theatre? Talk's Cheap? Harpo's? There was some talk of Maude Hunter's having bands at one point. Perhaps they could be assuaged. Norway House isn't a bad idea. Have you ever dealt with the VI Hardcore Society? I know a guy who's one of the directors, if you booked a hall or something for a show he might be able to hook you up with some sound gear. Don't want to put words in his mouth, but a Reaver show seems like the kind of thing that would be up their alley. - Mon, 7 Feb 2011 4:43pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | I can see the reason for lack of venues, it's the cost of insurance which prevents stuff from happening. I mean there's a few venues that allow the gigs, but look at all the drunk under ager fucks :) that decide to get sauced and ruin it for the people who wanna see the bands. (eg. look at what happened at Big Fernwood a few times) I dunno, boys will be boys right? (even some of the girls, nuff said...) - Wed, 9 Feb 2011 8:54pm
