...just because everybody should care about my opinions and agree with them...

Best Concerts in 2010:

1. Gaslight Anthem/Menzingers/Fake Problems at the Commodore sometime in September. Went to see Gaslight in particular, but was blown away by the supporting bands, esp. Fake Problems. I fucking love it when I go to concerts and get blindsided by great opening acts. This show also featured me getting flattened for the first time in years. I normally avoid the madness of the pit and stick to the edge. But I got thrown straight back and thankfully landed on a mattress of people already on the floor, who were surprisingly soft.

2. 54-40 at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo, in March I think. Was worth the drive to see these CanRock icons, esp. from Row Two. This band has basically provided the soundtrack for my 20s and 30s. Waited around to get a poster signed after the show (ya, I'm a bit of a nerd), but forgot to ask the guys how much they get in royalties from Hootie and the Blowfish covering "I Go Blind."

3. The Loved Ones and Frank Turner at the Commodore, early in the year. My fond memories of this show are overshadowed by bitterness that Frank Turner returned to Van a few months later and played a tiny room. I hadn't heard about this later show until it was reviewed afterwards - shit. At the show I was at, Frank was at his merch table and some guy asked him if he would talk to the guy's girlfriend on the phone, as she was a huge fan but too sick to make the show. So the guy rang his girl up on his cell phone, and Frank chatted away with her for a few minutes. Pretty classy.

Best Albums of 2010:

1. Gaslight Anthem, "American Slang" - no question

2. Weakerthans, "Live At the Burton Cummings Theatre" - fantastic live CD and DVD of the show. Could be the last we hear from this band for a while. This month, at another show at the Burton Cummings Theatre, the band played all four of their albums in their entirety. Would've been worth the airfare to Winnipeg to see that. But a show like that tells you that the band is likely taking a long break and wanted to make their last show for a while a memorable one.

3. Mumford and Sons, "Sigh No More" - a bittersweet listen, as this band played Vancouver twice in the last year and I couldn't make either show.

Anticipated in 2011:

1. New Social Distortion. Yeah, most indications are that Mike Ness can be a bit of a dick sometimes, but you can't argue with 30 years of great punk rock.

2. New Chixdiggit! That's right mafs! These guys and their 90-second songs put the goofiest grin on my face, without fail. And maybe a spring tour as well! Please, can we get this band to Victoria?!

3. New Ataris. This band tried the whole "we're gonna move away from our style and show the world how deep and brooding we really are" routine and failed miserably. Some bands just need to keep doing what they do best, and teasers from the new Ataris album indicate a return to their earlier sound - fast and straightforward, with balls and heart in equal measure.

That's all. - Wed, 22 Dec 2010 10:44pm

I agree 54-40 do put on a good show. I saw them around the early 90s at the Royal. Great sound and presence. They were with some russian band with a drummer who played drums with his shoes at one point. - Thu, 23 Dec 2010 8:29pm Edited: Thu, 23 Dec 2010 8:29pm

I try to catch 54-40 every chance I get.

Didn't get out a lot this year, but ZZ Top was pretty cool. - Thu, 23 Dec 2010 9:21pm

Lots of good music in 2010.

Broken Social Scene were utterly spellbinding when they played Alix Gooldin in October. I wasn't even familiar with their material at all, and I was transfixed. They definitely made me a huge fan with their live show.

My buddy's band opened up for Invasives in November at Logan's. Hadn't heard of them, but they were entirely awesome. Anyone who considers themselves a fan of straight-up, balls-deep rock n' roll should definitely give them a listen.

Muse back in April at the Pac.Col. was definitely a highlight. Intimate club shows are nice, but sometimes you just want to see a larger-than-life rock show in an arena with 20,000 other people. For my money, they're neck and neck with Radiohead for the best big rock show going.

There were others, but those were the shows that stuck out. - Tue, 28 Dec 2010 4:04pm

BTW: I bought tickets fer a Chixdiggit! gig (with Frenzal Rhomb, Flashlight and Speakeasy :( ) but it got cancelled at the last moment, I was so annoyed. :) - Tue, 28 Dec 2010 6:28pm Edited: Tue, 28 Dec 2010 6:33pm
