The Professor User Info... | Well, I suppose you are all wondering where the hell the site was for the last week. Gather round and i'll tell you a tale. So once upon a time the good folks that bring you this website had a little web server named Renaissance sitting out in toronto, and on this web server lived many happy little websites living in peace. All seemed well and good on the surface but this webserver had a dark little secret. in addition, to being not the quickest server in it's class, and ocasionaly prone to crashing, this server had been set up with an open mail server. An open mail server is a mail server which you can send mail through without a password. For a long time everything was fine, until one day some nasty people discovered Renaissance's little secret. He wasn't the smartest server around so it was easy to convince him to send mail for these people, what was in that mail? Rennaisance never asked, he just kept on sending it like he always did. but that mail was what folks in those days liked to call SPAM. Renaissance sent spam to many many people. And many of those people didn't like spam so they complained to their internet providers. Their internet providers in turn complained to the people at Canaca.com where Renaissance lived, got his alternating current and was plugged into the great link. Now the internet provider people gave a decree to the folks at Canaca threatening to stop providing an internet connection to all of Canacas servers if this spamming did not cease. The people at Canaca, who are desperatley overworked and disorganized panicked and turned Renaissance off without even informing his masters, or giving them a chance to correct the problem. This was a great tradgedy when a few well placed key strokes could have neutralized the threat of spam without even having to shut down the server. Alas overworked frazzled minds often work poorly. When Renaissance's masters saw that their websites were no longer working they called up Canaca and confronted them. After a number of phone calls Nev was able to talk to the head system admin, who told him that Renaissance could never be plugged in again. Nev tried to explain that he had never sent any spam himself and the threat could be neutralized but the system admin was unmoved. Even the explanation that the security vulnerability was caused by negigence on teh part of Canaca in the inital server setup, was not enough to sway him. Hey said that Nev would have to find a new server with a different company. He said that they would send the files from Renaissance to the new server when it was ready but they could not put him back online. So, disheartened Nev went of on s journey and found some very nice French Canadian fellows with some excellent webservers. They set him up with a new server: Renaissance II who was faster, smarter, and much less gulliable than his predecessor. The tricks that fooled Renaissance would not work on this new server. He was a different breed. And the nice french canadian gentlem took good care of him, and promised never to shut him off out of fear. So now, with a new server all that was left was the process of moving the websites to their new home. The problem was that they were stuck in the clutches of the system administrator at Canaca. When nev asked him to send the files as requested, he did not get a response. Again and again Nev tried to get the files sent but the Curmudgeony old network admin hid behind a wall of pawns. Each time nev emailed or called he would get a response from a peon in the organization who was sympathetic but unable to provide the data that nev so badly needed. A week went by and still no data. Nev had tried everything and was getting very flustered. Sati, who runs livemusicvancouver.com and Liam from Lucky Bar (whose website was also affected) joined the fight, and the three of them pushed and pushed by every avenue open to them until finally Canaca could take no more and began to give up the files. So here we are, in the final stages of this epic conflict. The database has been restored but there are many other small websites whose files are yet to be provided. Nev and Sati will keep on fighting until ever last shred of data has been returned. Thank you all for your patience through these difficult times. Know that precautions will be taken to ensure that nothing like this will ever happen again. - Wed, 8 Sep 2004 10:56pm

moron User Info... | Agreed the hosts do not sound like they handled this in a professional manner but likewise, having an open relay for a year or two and not noticing it isn't that great either (your SMTP logs are there for a reason). But lessons learned of course. When you set up a new server you always need to do some hardening first: remove services you do not need limit access to those you do check that what you are running is up to date Considering that something like 60% to 90% of email traffic is now spam it is a beyond being a minor problem when folks have misconfigured email servers. You will have to hope that the livevictoria.com domain is not listed in any commercial anti-spam software as that stuff is impossible to get off of (sites can be blocked by IP or domain amongst any number of other signatures / behaviours). Anyway, glad to see livevic is back despite the tone above. Cheers - Fri, 10 Sep 2004 6:29pm
