The Professor User Info... | You probably noticed allready but by popular demand I changed it so you can now see who made the last post to a thread from the thread list. You likes? - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 8:51am
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | yup - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 10:17am
The Professor User Info... | OK So more changes: I made it so when you reply to a thread you see the whole thread above you so you can go back and read what you are replying to and copy and paste as needed. I also made it so if subjects are longer than a certain limit (40 characters) they get truncated on the subject list. If you hover you mouse you can see the whole subject. I just did this to make it so that when somebody posts a really long subject it doesn't screw everything up and force you to scroll. What do you guys think, is it better this way or the old way? - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 1:32pm
Mi*coll* User Info... | i dunno. somebody post something really long. - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 2:40pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Yikes, what a change! But I'm old, so I hate change, damnit :) - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 3:31pm
[+} User Info... | yo nev... now my spiffy html titles look all... well un-spiffy. - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 5:29pm
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | It's saying that the latest post is made by the one who started the thread on all of the threads. I like the rest of the changes. - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 6:06pm
V-DUB User Info... | I Don't like the Truncated subject line. I think old way is better. I think the other changes are cool but I would like to see the subject line format back the way it use to be. - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 7:35pm
Dd[]Sanger User Info... | Thumbs up to the changes!! - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 8:24pm
Stringbender User Info... | new feature not working so good: take a look at who is identified as the "last post" person, it is always the same as the thread originator. - Thu, 10 Jun 2004 6:17am
Matt User Info... | No offense, but I think the new format looks like shit. - Thu, 10 Jun 2004 6:27am
Mutilashawn User Info... | I dig!! - Thu, 10 Jun 2004 6:37am
BBJones User Info... | Certainly appreciate the work. Looks like too much space on screen is now taken up by who and when topics were started and replied to. Absolutely no need to have "by" included with every single user for topic starts and last post. I think we get it that it was "by" the person listed :) Perhaps smaller size font for those 4 columns? They look to take up over 50% of the horizontal screen space. Perhaps just wrap after the date and show the name in one field, not separate columns. Please show more than 40 chars on the subject! At least allow it to wrap once. 100+ would be nice, and if you recover some space from the other columns, it should still look presentable. Does the thread started date even matter? At least in the main view? What about the filter for showing "messages from...". I'd suggest it is set to "ALL". You only show 12 per page now anyways, but topics started over 30 days ago vanish for most people becuase who wants to change the filter? By default, people want to see all current threads on the first page regardless of when the topic started. People care about when the last post was made, not how long the thread has been active. The number of posts is a good indicator of that. And if someone really wants to know, they can look inside the thread. Can you move the quoted text to below the reply field? It sucks having to scroll down every time I make a reply... And when do we get our search feature?? ;) Just some suggestions... - Thu, 10 Jun 2004 9:57am
The Professor User Info... | Some most excellent suggestions. Thanks. Sorry for launching the changes so hastily, I should have made sure everything was working beter. For example the last poster not showing up properly. I had it working on the test server but it doesn't work in real life for some reason. I like the idea of not including the thread started date. What do other people think? Is anyone going to miss it? Also, for me when I click reply I'm automatically moved down to the reply window. It doesn't seem to be working for BB though, are many other people having this problem? Search is coming soon, I'm just stretched so thin these days it takes a while to get anything done. - Thu, 10 Jun 2004 11:00am
[+} User Info... | it's starting to look good nev! - Thu, 10 Jun 2004 11:12am
Metropol Steve User Info... | Hi Nev, If I reply when not logged in, it doesn't ask for my password the first time. I click the "Post Message" button once, then it reloads the page with a field for passwords... Other than that - looking great. Steve - Thu, 10 Jun 2004 12:59pm
The Professor User Info... | Ok I fixed the problem with the last poster not being dispalyed properly. I'll get some of those other modifictations up soon. - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 6:05am
The Professor User Info... | OK, now there is way more room for the subject line. I removed the thread started date, but if you click on the title of the thread started column it brings the date back and sorts things by the start time of the thread. What to you think? I also made it so that wher it used to say *new posts* it now just puts a * I'll have to come up with something clearer but I just wanted to stop wasting all that space. again, thoughts? - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 6:20am
_Griphin_ User Info... | I noticed the new message flag had been changed, worked for me, but it sure confused me when I first saw it. Why not you use a (NP) flag instead of the *, or if all else fails, list somewhere that * means new messages. BTW: NP=New Post. Also, you gonna get around to wiring in a feature that if you created a message, you can also delete that post even if someone else has posted a message after your original post? (that make sense?!?) - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 9:10am
The Professor User Info... | Yeah *NP with a key explaning somewhere sounds like a good way to explain it. I'll maybe do somthing like that. Or maybe I'll just put the last post time or the subject in bold or something if it's new. - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 3:35pm
The Professor User Info... | I could easily make it so you could delete threads even if peopel have replied, but I deliberatley made it so once someone has replied you can't delete your post. Basically the rational is, if nobody has replied you are just removing your own post but if people have replied then you are removing their posts too. I don't see it being a really big deal either way. What do you guys think? Do you want people to be able to delete their threads even if they have replies? Oh, and I fixed the clock. It had gone awry. - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 3:37pm
The Professor User Info... | Just testing something.... - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 4:00pm
BBJones User Info... | All good changes! New format looks fantastic. As far as indicating new posts, you could even do that by just bolding the "Last post by" name. That would be really easy to see and just as intuitive as having an asterisk or something... Being able to edit or delete your reply once someone has posted after you is pretty darn handy, and exists on every other forum I've visited. A good example of a need for this feature is a post about a show where the date changes. Big pain in the ass if you can't edit the title of the post. And if the initial author wants to delete their post (along with any replies) why stop them? People delete their own threads for a couple of reasons: - They are either no longer useful (i.e. equipment was for sale and is sold, or a show was cancelled) - They are embarassed about starting something stupid. Both good reasons to let the thread dissappear for good. And back to the issue I have with the quoted text in the reply, yes it anchors to the right spot on a new reply, but doesn't when editing a reply. I have to scroll to the bottom to edit the post which for some people, they may not know they have to scroll since when you press the edit button, you basically see the exact same list of replies starting at the top (since they are all quoted). Get what I'm saying? And last but not least, when are you going to use a pre-built forum package that has all this stuff built in already? ;) - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 4:02pm
[+} User Info... | ...it's wayyyyy cooler building your own? - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 5:04pm
Phil User Info... | Nev, an important basic feature is adding hyperlinks and images to posts, when can we expect to see that? - Sun, 13 Jun 2004 10:30am
Broccoli User Info... | Bang-up Job Nev. Thats a good thing, I hope... - Sun, 13 Jun 2004 10:38am
Mutilashawn User Info... | I miss the indication that a thread has "new posts". Now I'm just confused. - Mon, 14 Jun 2004 9:14am
Fred the Dragon User Info... | Thank you so much for fixing the clock!!!! - Mon, 14 Jun 2004 5:12pm
V-DUB User Info... | Ya, it sure would be sweet to be able to add images to posts. I think you are doing a great job though. Thanks and keep it coming. - Mon, 14 Jun 2004 6:00pm
The Professor User Info... | OK more changes: I used BBJones Idea of making the name of the last poster bold if there are new posts. I also made it so you can see the date of the most recent post for any message board section. I also fixed it so that when you edit your reply it takes you down to the bottom where you fill the info in. i'm still thinkign about allowign people to delete whole threads if they posted them. THat makes sense. I'm hestitant to let people edit a post after it had been replied to though, it's like messing with the timeline like going back in time to kill your grandpa.... As for the images in posts, I know i've been dragging my heels on that one, I'm sorry. I think I'll add that feature soon. Would one post per message be good enough? Just a simple upload like it is for the pictures for your username? - Wed, 16 Jun 2004 3:56pm
