radiofreebc User Info... | I'm just sad... A friend phoned me tonight to tell me Chris had passed this week. I had just spent the night with tears in my eyes talking to another friend about all the special people we knew who were with us no longer, and as selfish as this may sound...this was really not the way I had hoped my night would end. But, out of sadness and loss, community can be born...one love. - Wed, 28 Apr 2004 11:35pm
jay brown User Info... | You have got to be kidding me. What happened I was having conversations with him a couple of months ago. Wow I'm stunned I've known Chris a long time that is horrible. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 1:43am
laura User Info... | Incredibly sad news. Chris had done so well with his bakeries, restaurants, etc. He has a family that loved him so much. My thoughts are with Shoshannah, her mom and little brother Adam. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 7:30am
laura User Info... | Forgot to add that the service will be this Sunday, 2pm at the interfaith chapel, Uvic. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 7:47am
Zippgunn User Info... | A terrible shock considering it looked a lot like he had turned things around, but unfortunately it appears that he lost the battle in the end. Chris was probably the hardest working musician I ever worked with; if I would have let him he would have practiced 7 days a week. He seemed almost obsessed with getting better as a musician. He was the vocalist for the now-legendary Sludge Confrontations (as well as the hilarious Black Flag fuck band Loose Nuts with the late Ken Jensen) and played his hyper active bass with myself and Ken Kemster in the much celebrated Shovlhed. He did a couple of stints with the Show Business Giants (sadly not documented in the studio) and went on to form the little heard Mighty Mite and, more recently, explored his beloved dub music with Pacific Frontal System. I talked to him last week and he told me that all he really wanted to do was get home and play his new bass, since he hadn't been able to for awhile. A big loss for the local scene, that's for sure. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 8:14am
Borat User Info... | That's awful news. How did this happen? - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 9:27am
Dane User Info... | This is really sad. Chris Buck also played in Digg with Kia, Ozzie, Charlie Wade and other Victoria jazz musicians. He was really stoked on Pacific Frontal System too. Although things didn't work out for him in that band in the end and he had things in his own life he was dealing with I thought he was still plugging away. I really would like to know how he died and where. It's a shame because he was fun; so talented; had a lot of energy and so much potential. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 2:14pm
jay brown User Info... | Ya I was talking to Dan Beer a while ago and he was all stoked on the line up with Chris. You know I was never exeptionally close with Chris but we were always friendly with each other, you know the relationship. We'd stop and say hi and chat on the street or at shows but never much closer than that. I always liked Chris though I can honestly say that since the early eighties I've never had a bad word to say about him. As far as musical skills goes he was easily one of the best bass players I have ever known or seen for that matter,I mean Les Clayppol, Flea, that kind of quality. It was always a joy to watch him play. Strange some people you expect to hear about dying, Chris wouldnt ever have been on that list. I thought I was reading the name wrong at first when I saw this post. My condolonces to his family and friends, the music community has lost someone of such stunning talent as well. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 3:04pm
Laprider User Info... | Sad and shitty is all I can say! Too many friends, 14 years ago yesterday Randy Left us. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 3:32pm
Chris Logan User Info... | A damn shame. I can't say I was ever close friends with Chris, but we did a lot of business together and I always found him enthusiastic, honest, and professional. His love of music was obvious, and whenever he played at Logan's he always wanted to know how he could make the next show better; not out of any financial concern, but out of a genuine desire to improve his art. I didn't know I would miss him before, but I do now. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 4:35pm
Tyson Stagger User Info... | Hearing the news early this afternoon was so fucking surreal. What an uncalculable loss to the music scene, and all of us that knew Chris as a friend. Ive not met many people, let alone musicians with such a magnanomous spirit for sharing their art and time so willingly and passionately. As long as I have known him, all he wanted to do was become more accomplished on his instrument and in his art. He succeded in both Im sure all would agree. Chris will be missed terribly by many. What an immense tragedy. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 5:38pm
Dane User Info... | I remember he would always invite me to sing with Pacific Frontal System and jam. I really enjoyed doing that although it I didn't do it all that often. I did actually sing once with them at Steamers Pub. There was awhile there where he would try to get many different people up on stage singing with the band (Pacific Frontal System). I am friends with his ex band mates, (Matt and Thomas from Run Chico Run) + Ian who used to play in the Bombasts and in Pacific Frontal System before he really committed to Capoeira. I also remember him being in this magazine that featured awesome bass players from all over North America. It was awesome but a lot of people didn't really know of that particular magazine. Whatever. But it still showed there were those that noticed his talent. He also knew about cool web sites with special effects when you clicked on certain things. He would show me those web sites whenever I visited him. If anyone knows when the funeral is please e-mail me. I want to try to go for sure. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 6:37pm
a friend User Info... | So sorry to hear this news. How did it happen? - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 7:14pm
Rawb User Info... | Wow. I feel a real sense of loss. This news plus laprider's mention of Randy's death have completely changed my mood 180 from where I was when I logged in here. These people go and I see those I know posting here tonight, Jay and Scott etc... I really appreciate the fun times we've shared in this community over the years. - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 7:17pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Although I didn't meet Chris, or even know him, gotta respect someone who had such an influence in this community. Peace... - Fri, 30 Apr 2004 6:00am
Nocturna User Info... | What sad news on such a beautiful day. Chris will be sadly missed by all those who came to know him :( - Fri, 30 Apr 2004 6:34am
KnifeGhost User Info... | Wow, I didn't know who the dude was until I read he was in Pacific Frontal System..... I met him (not knowing who he was) once, after a Friedegghead performance at Cinecenta, and he was friendly and totally unpretentious..... I only met him twice, but I can see why he left so many mourners..... - Fri, 30 Apr 2004 7:28am
mark morr User Info... | Holy shit, is that ever brutal. I would never have suspected he'd die that young. Chris was one of the 1st people I met when I moved to Vic in '84. I remember doing acid with him for the 1st time and listening to the Sludge Confrontations demo and Jerk Ward demos in his basement and laughing our drug crazed heads off. I remember his first band, We Don't Do Much. He had a big house party when he lived just off Fort St one time and got so mad at me when I pushed over an outhouse across the street from his pad. To this day, I still do not know why ;) He was a fun guy w/ a really goofy sense of humor and I enjoyed shooting the shit w/ him on this messageboard a few times and catching up on our history. I can't imagine this had anything to do with drugs, but then again nothing would surprise me in Victoria. Fuckin' bummer for all his friends, family and Shovlhed fans. markus - Fri, 30 Apr 2004 11:09am
dan wise User Info... | on sunday eve after the hootenanny there will be an informal gathering of friends at logans pub 1821 cook street. 8 p.m. is a good hour to work with. i will fire up the p.a. for the purpose of sonic eulogising. bring a rare or not so rare tape/c.d./l.p./7inch and we can listen if we like. tyson and i were tossing around the idea of some live music being played so that will also be encouraged. bring it down and let it ring . chris would have wanted it this way. R.I.P. the mad sub-woofer, long live "ogre-rock" p.s. does any one have a copy of that poster of chris some prankster put up all over town about 15 years ago? that was some funny shit. - Fri, 30 Apr 2004 12:13pm

MWPR User Info... | This is terribly sad. Chris was the first bass player we had in Resistance eons ago and we kinda learned to play together. He used to joke and say I taught him to play bass, but he sure became a consumate musician, with the kind of skills I could only aspire towards. A super nice guy and a phenominal musician; my sympathies go out to his family. This really came out of left field and took me by suprise. Maybe, just maybe, someone will take notice and not make the same mistake. Too many old friends have been lost. RIP Chris, we had some great times man. Mike - Sat, 1 May 2004 3:03pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Chris was in the Resistance?!? Must remember to play that CD tomorrow, that stuff is off the hook! - Sun, 2 May 2004 12:15am

mark morr User Info... | me neither. But the more i think about this the more it pisses me off. Who the fuck hooked him up? They should be strung up and shot! I don't care if it was some 50 year old bitch of a girlfiend, someone should be on the hook for this shit. - Sun, 2 May 2004 9:38am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Victoria Bassist Dies of Drug Overdose Mike Devlin Times Colonist Sunday, May 02, 2004 Chris Buck: Lived to play bass. Chris Parker-Buck had two surnames, but he had one purpose in life: to play the bass guitar. And he pursued his goal with unerring accuracy during his 20 years as a professional musician. Parker-Buck died Monday of a drug overdose. He was 37. Parker-Buck developed a fondness early for the bass guitar, which he played in numerous bands after moving to Victoria from Long Beach, Calif., as a toddler. Through his pioneering work with early Victoria punk band Shovlhed, Parker-Buck, who performed under the name Chris Buck, quickly became one of the most respected bassists of any genre in Victoria. It was through sheer determination that he became such a great player, said Scott Henderson, a former bandmate in Shovlhed. "He didn't have hardly any natural talent. It was all practise, practise, practise. He'd practise all day if you let him. I've never worked with someone who worked that hard." Shovlhed enjoyed some success outside B.C., eventually releasing an album on a Dutch record label. Henderson, who has played with a number of internationally recognized groups, remembers how hard it was to play with Parker-Buck, simply because he was so accomplished at his chosen instrument. "He played five notes when he really should have played one. When he got to Pacific Frontal System, he finally figured that out." Pacific Frontal System was the last band Parker-Buck played in. The remarkable local group was an excursion into dub reggae, one of Parker-Buck's favourite genres. During his years with the hypnotic, bass-driven trio, his expert playing was the subject of small article in the respected Bass Player magazine. The group disbanded 18 months ago when he fell into am emotional slump, according to his wife, local author and restaurateur Audrey Alsterberg. "That was his life. And sadly, when he started to get depressed, he didn't have the resolve to stay with (playing bass)." Parker-Buck checked himself into Nanaimo's Edgewood Treatment Centre in early February, where he remained for 75 days, Alsterberg said. The couple, who separated three years ago, talked every day, Alsterberg said. He was released on April 22 and sounded hopeful. "He was in great spirits," she said. "He was very much like his old self." But something triggered him emotionally, she added. "He was actually a very fragile person, and sensitive. He took things hard, things someone else could just blow off." News of Parker-Buck's death shook Henderson, a longtime friend who also had been in regular contact with Parker-Buck during his rehabilitation. "Each subsequent call, he sounded better and better," Henderson said. "All indications were he was on the road to recovery." Parker-Buck's undying passion for music was a rare commodity, and he will be sorely missed in the local music scene, Henderson said. "The guy lived to play. He drove people nuts, I'm not going to kid you, but he was a lot of fun to be around." A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the UVic Interfaith Chapel (Lot No. 6). A concert celebrating his contribution to the local music community will be held tonight at Logan's Pub, 1821 Cook St., at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edgewood Treatment Centre in Nanaimo. http://www.canada.com/victoria/timescolonist/story.asp?id=4D153C82-6CCF-4D73-961B-166DA657A560 Pacific Frontal System: http://www.newmusiccanada.com/genres/artist.cfm?Band_Id=7444 Just listening to the P.F.S. tracks, pretty good stuff!!! - Sun, 2 May 2004 11:39am
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | I thought that I could not really contribute to this thread other than to convey my sadness that such a loved person had left us. The truth is that I had met Chris before and had not even realized it. In fact he was at my wedding. His wife is a close friend of my wife's family and she pointed out to me in photos who he was... It's even harder for when you can put a face on a tradgey. My heart goes out to all his family and friends. - Sun, 2 May 2004 12:51pm
Audrey User Info... | hey .... I heard about this forum and wanted to see if I could be of any help in keeping Chris' spirit burning bright. I was C's partner for 12 years and after being totally immersed in his life and his death for the past 7 days, I know him better that ever. (Highly recommend beer for breakfast with Shovlhed full blast!) He left behind a weight -almost as much as one of those crazy-ass amps of his- of Victoria music history. When I pull it together and get things organized, I'd be happy to share with copies of material or whatever. I want to thank all of you that came to the service yesterday (sorry I missed the jam) and especially to those that spoke, I was deeply, deeply touched. And thanks for all of these validating, loving comments, if he only knew. As for who hooked him up, I will find out, promise. Was that poster you were referring to the INRI one with the rose in his mouth? Here's to saving those we can and fighting for those who are gone. - Mon, 3 May 2004 11:02am
Zippgunn User Info... | Nice article by Mike Devlin. To set the record straight, Mike wasn't responsible for the rather insensitive headline; apparently the TC doesn't let its writers write their own headlines. To his credit he phoned me and apologised for it, even though it had nothing to do with him. Wonder what the headline would have been if Chris was a jazz sax player or a classical pianist. The jam was a hoot and Chris would have been in there like a dirty shirt had he been available. Good job by Danny Wise and the crew at Logan's for providing a most appropriate venue for the "wake". I'm now going away to nurse my hangover... - Mon, 3 May 2004 11:57am
_Griphin_ User Info... | I was planning to attend that jam to show my respects, but I felt that since I didn't know Chris personally, or ever caught him playing live, I thought I'd just stick out like a sore thumb. Hey does anyone know where i might be able to buy a copy of that Shovlhed CD that was released?!? I haven't heard that band yet. - Mon, 3 May 2004 12:04pm
Nocturna User Info... | The service/celebration was really amazing. You could truly feel the love in the room... very poignant. Sorry I missed the jam. Personally I haven't seen too much of Chris over the past few years, but felt my connection to him strengthened by the wonderful stories and memories shared by his family and friends. It was great to see so many faces from days gone by too. Audrey, my thoughts are with you and Chris' family during this time. His spirit will indeed shine on and on. :) S.V. - Mon, 3 May 2004 12:11pm
Curmudgeon Rocker User Info... | Fuck that sucks I couldn't make the service - I had previous obligations I couldn't get out of, despite telling Zippgun I'd be there. (Were you by any chance the only one there wearing green, Z? Yeah - I'm sure Chris would've TOTALLY expected to see the North Stars jacket.) Shit - this sucks typing this. I hope, Chris, you're playing studiously away, I hope you're at peace, dude, I hope you're thinking of your family, and Audrey, and of all the musicians/freaks you've jammed with, inspired, riled, challenged, motivated and amused over the past twenty years. I hope you the best, dude. I'll remember you and I'm sure we'll hook up sooner or later. Take care. - Mon, 3 May 2004 6:47pm
Zippgunn User Info... | Only the North Star hat, I'm afraid, the ole jcket is just a bit tatty for a funeral. I did, however, wear my last remaining Shovled t-shirt for the last time before I retire it forever. - Mon, 3 May 2004 7:47pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Shovlhed T-Shirt huh? Love to get one of those! - Tue, 4 May 2004 11:18am
Kaisha De Ochoa User Info... | When i found out that Chris had died I didn't clue in that this was Sho's brother! He was a great guy I remeber him from the Rat's Nest and Rebar!!! I also know his mom and I am soooo sorrry for your loss. What I do remeber is that he was full of energy and had a great smile! My heart goes out to his family, friends and the music seen.
