The Professor User Info... | FROM: STAN FOX March 18, 2004 Theyre Threatening Our Public Television Network I want my Medianet colleagues to know that an important public asset of great importance to video and filmmakers is likely to be changed for the worse in 2004. The B.C. Government has announced plans to partner the Knowledge Network with a private operator. If the pattern in Alberta is repeated we will see re-runs of cheap American programming (Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Star Trek etc) and commercials instead of the socially responsible commercial free programming on the present Knowledge Network. B.C. Filmmakers will lose the level of support that they now receive from our citizen owned broadcaster.. This is what happened in Alberta in 1995 when the public network was sold to private owners whose interest was, as always, making their money by selling air time to advertisers. The Knowledge Network currently supports Canadian non-commercial video productions to a degree that is not even approached by the privatized Alberta Educational Network. We can do something about this. The permission (license) to operate the Knowledge Network is under the control of the Federal Government, not the BC Government. This means that the BC Government will have to go before the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television and Telecomunications Commission) and have public hearings in order to justify the sale. This gives us, the citizens and present owners, an opportunity to present our opinions. Even before that we might be able to convince the B.C. Government that, considering the mess they are in over the sale of B.C. Rail, The Ferries, etc., they should forget partnering of The Knowledge Network. If you feel that it is time to stop, the control of our information media passing to private, profit seeking, monopolies, please write to the Minister of Advanced Education, Shirley Bond, and Gordon Campbell. Just click on the links below and tell these two that you do not want funding withdrawn from The Knowledge Network (which is what they want to do). THIS IS AN ISSUE FOR ALL VIDEO ARTISTS! The Minister of Advanced Education, Shirley Bond email [email protected] Gordon Campbell email [email protected] There is a local group of activists, The West Coast Media Society, that focuses on these issues. You can read more on their web site. They would appreciate knowing of your support. Just click on their email address on the site. http://www.wcms.ca - Thu, 8 Apr 2004 2:00pm
Robnoxious User Info... | I've sent a e-mails to Mr Campbell and to Shirley Bond. Let's fill their mailboxes with our opinions. - Thu, 8 Apr 2004 4:42pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | That would be interesting, but perhaps they could mix the two media's together, have independant film with the usual American repeats?!? - Thu, 8 Apr 2004 5:24pm
Dane User Info... | Usual bullshit from the Liberal government. Selling off every available "public" entity there is. Soon everything they're selling (ferry - although already sold --, highways, etc) will be quadruple the price to use. Service won't be improved but will cost more for the same thing. And the joke of it all is that all the money they say will be saved by privitization will go into the pockets of the rich. Mr. Campbell doesn't give a shit though because he and his Liberal buddies will live high on the hog long after the election whether or not they win or lose. If they do end of winning many of us may have to move from BC (which is happenning already). They'll run this province into the ground. I guarantee you that. - Thu, 8 Apr 2004 7:21pm
Robnoxious User Info... | Got an official response : Thank you for your email expressing concern about the future of the Knowledge Network. Government is currently engaged in a competitive process to develop a new model for the Knowledge Network. We are looking for partners who offer innovative ideas to enhance the province's educational broadcaster. Our goal is to create a new vision for educational programming, which will be relevant to viewers across the province and have a positive impact on employment and investment. The Knowledge Network's role is to provide top-notch educational programming, and this is where the broadcaster's focus and energy will be most beneficial to students and viewers. The proponents vision for the Knowledge Network and for educational programming is one of the criteria on which proposals will be evaluated. I can assure you that the province will always retain the authority to designate the license to an operator, with the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission's approval. The license is designated for educational broadcasting, and that will not change. I appreciate the time you have taken to make me aware of your views on this important topic. I have shared a copy of your letter with the Honourable Shirley Bond, Minister of Advanced Education. I can assure you that Minister Bond will share your input with those involved in this process. Sincerely, Gordon Campbell Premier pc: Honourable Shirley Bond - Tue, 13 Apr 2004 12:58pm
