Chris User Info... | First of all I don't have all the facts, so that is what I'm trying to find out. Apperently for the Zone band of the month shows at Steamers in 2004, Steamers takes half the door, and the other half is distrubuted amoungst the bands. Does this seem fair to anyone who is a musician or fan? I know it's not about money, but seriously, why is the bar making more than the band that everyone paid to see? Steamers is already being advertised 3 to 4 times a day on the Zone. Is that not enough? Now they have to cut into the starving musicians pockets? I can understand a bar taking a $100 or $150 to pay the sound guy, but half the door sounds fricken rediculus. Could someone please tell me what is up. Thanx - Fri, 27 Feb 2004 8:42pm
Brandon User Info... | Book a show there and then trash the place, it'll be a trade for playing - Fri, 27 Feb 2004 8:52pm
Fred the Dragon User Info... | Every time I've played there, we've had two options... 1. We keep 80% of the door (I think that was the percentage) and Steamers pays the opener $100. 2. We keep all the door and decide independently how much to pay the opener. If there's some other arrangement for the Zone shows, I would suggest not catering to a shitty radio station and book your own shows there. It's not like being a Zone Band of the Month means shit anyways. - Sat, 28 Feb 2004 4:07am
Robnoxious User Info... | Why would you want to play there anyway. The bar has the worst layout and there is always to big a line for drinks. - Sat, 28 Feb 2004 9:23am
chris User Info... | Oops, I just read my original message, and I think it sounds a bit harsh. I'm not trying to bash Steamers. I like the place. It's a good spot to play, and I have fun going there to see bands perform. I think it's pretty cool that when other clubs were playing nothing but canned music and DJ's, Steamers was having, and still is, live music every night of the week. Keep up the good work guys. - Sun, 29 Feb 2004 1:23pm
Metropol Steve User Info... | A Zone show would be booked by the Zone - and therefore they would act as booking agent and decide what the band gets paid. Or if they just set up the show and Steamers books it - the band would negotiate payment far before the show. We handle both the design and the distribution for Steamers posters and I know that the bar paid for all the advertising for the show - not the Zone. As for the radio mentions - Steamers more than likely pays for that as well. I also know that the booking agent is a hard negotiator, but he is also an honest man and always pays his guarantees. - Tue, 2 Mar 2004 8:44pm
Tim User Info... | I think its basically more of a trade off for having your show plugged five times a day on the radio. It sucks, since the bar is probably already making tons of money off everybody buying drinks, but they can do it because they know its going to be a good show for whoever plays it. We thought the 50%cut was a bit harsh too, but the BOM show was definitely worthwhile for us to play. Since we only really play at Lucky Bar I don't really know what the format is for a regular booking. - Wed, 3 Mar 2004 2:06pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | I've never dealt with Steamers, although we have been offered shows there. Haven't played because the timing was never right for us...could very well one day. I have heard things both good and bad...but I hear that about every venue in town. If you feel you got shafted by a bar, just don't go back and you will learn from your mistakes. On the other hand, it's hard to look at your deal objectively when you're in the middle of it...like maybe there were stipulations overlooked or you didn't pay close attention to details? Look into your show deal before you play. Sign a contract! Verbal agreements are bullshit. If you are not smart enough to do such things, hire someone who can pull it off. If you end up getting shafted with no recourse, you have no one to blame but yourself. - Thu, 4 Mar 2004 2:56pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | The other bars here don't do contracts (so far as I've heard....) - Thu, 4 Mar 2004 3:29pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | Then demand one or don't play. If all the bands who wanted a contract and didn't get one didn't play...there wouldn't be many bands to choose from. Another option is to go for what your band is realistically worth in a contract. What bar is going to sign a contract for a band that loses them money? - Thu, 4 Mar 2004 4:25pm
Troutbreath User Info... | "Another option is to go for what your band is realistically worth in a contract." ROSS B AY's band? I wanna make some snide remark so bad my typing finger is shaking. I'm trying to work on my "serious attitude problem" however. I'm stuck in quarantine as it is. - Thu, 4 Mar 2004 4:54pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | I love you all!!! - Thu, 4 Mar 2004 7:50pm
ML7Mike User Info... | seriously tho, Ross's band kicks ass and does draw pretty good too. - Thu, 4 Mar 2004 8:06pm
The One After Two User Info... | Can't you just take the door? If you bring 100 people to the bar and charge them $5 then your band is worth $500 a night, isn't it? Then you pay your openner, sound, manager, posters...and then drink your profit. - Thu, 4 Mar 2004 9:23pm
Whitford St. Holmes User Info... | I've always found them great there. They keep their word and pay you what they said they would. I've played a lot of places where you were double booked, bumped, paid at a later date or not paid at all. When you figure in a soundman and system to play YOUR music, it's really academic whether you get 'big bucks'. If you put on a great show and draw consistently for several dates, most likely any good club (and I'd put Steamer's in this category) will pay up. - Mon, 8 Mar 2004 7:35pm
Broccoli User Info... | you guys are negating the REAL issue: Steamers is ripping off their patrons by subjecting them to such god-awful music - Mon, 8 Mar 2004 9:53pm
SweetGrass User Info... | Steamers has always been a good time for us! The staff are great and payment has been what was discussed without any problems...now about that crazy kitchen dude???? Cheers S.G. - Tue, 9 Mar 2004 8:53pm
ML7Mike User Info... | Steamers have great hot wings. - Wed, 10 Mar 2004 9:44am
