\m/ User Info... | I'm just wondering if anybody knows who or what has been nominated? This issue didn't have anything, so i'm just curious. - Fri, 13 Feb 2004 11:35am
Troutbreath User Info... | SweetGrass' youth theatre company, Tumbleweeds' is nominated for their world premier performance of the play "Of Grizzly Mice and Man" The kids are really excited to be included with the adult stageplays and to be taken seriously by adults. - Fri, 13 Feb 2004 7:58pm

\m/ User Info... | is this the M-power thing or the Monday magazine thing? What's the difference? - Mon, 16 Feb 2004 1:11pm
SweetGrass User Info... | The " M " awards are put on by Monday Magazine and incorporate film, music, theatre, literature, hot spots and a variety of other things. It's an event to help broaden the scope of the victoria arts scene. The " M " power( think empower) awards are put on for the music scene and nominations are submitted by the bands, as opposed to open nominations for Monday. It's all good fun. Nice to be recognized period! I realize I don't have all the details but hope this helps. This particular thread is for the Monday awards. - Mon, 16 Feb 2004 1:52pm
MonkeyWithNoBones User Info... | so what bands have been nominated for the Monday awards? It will be interesting to see, as opposed to the self-nominated M-Power entrees. - Mon, 16 Feb 2004 2:28pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | I just think its bizzar that of the 2 local awards both are an M award ... its too bad no one talked before doing this it would absolve SO much confusion =) - Mon, 16 Feb 2004 3:12pm
ML7Mike User Info... | well I heard the Mpower Awards mysteriously morphed into the Island Music Awards or something, run by a different group, or something, but what do I know. - Tue, 17 Feb 2004 7:37am
Cordova Bay User Info... | I believe the M*POWER Awards predated the M Awards by 1 year. This year the M*POWER Awards will be awarded at the Island Music Awards Show at Legends along with a 1 day music conference. Think of the OSCAR being presented at the Academy Awards Show. It is a bit of a stretch but, why not. For the record, the self-nominated JUNO Awards are set to take place in Edmonton, AB, April 2-4. CTV will, once again, broadcast the Sunday night show. We are pleased to report that David Gogo's "Live at Deer Lake" has been nominated for the "Blues Album of the Year" JUNO. - Tue, 17 Feb 2004 12:47pm
\m/ User Info... | so....... Nobody else knows who's been nominated...? - Tue, 17 Feb 2004 7:19pm
ML7Mike User Info... | Also, the self nominated Canadian Music Awards are taking place next month. Public can vote for indy choices at: http://www.cmw.net/voting/indies_home.php ( If you wanna vote for ML7 as Fans Choice for Indy Metal you can enter our name in OTHER @ : http://www.cmw.net/voting/indies_vote.php?category_id=12 ) Actually the 'indy's' are self nominated but I dont think the main awards are. - Wed, 18 Feb 2004 8:16am
Cordova Bay User Info... | Hey... ML7Mike. I would have voted for you except the voting ended February 15th. I don't believe there is any category in The Canadian Independent Music Awards (The Indies) that does not require an application (these close in November with a fee of just $35, if I recall correctly). However, since one of the sponsors is SoundScan you'd expect at least one category to be based on retail sales. I do like the idea that they don't equate winning to being "best". Each award goes to the "Favourite" in each category. Makes sense and works for me. The Canadian Music Industry Awards (later in the week) nominations are generated by the industry. It is too bad that one category has a real problem: Rack Jobber of the Year Downtown Disc Distributors Handleman Company of Canada Pindoff Record Sales Ltd. \m/ User Info... | Hey Cordova Bay, I was taliking about the "M"onday Magazine awards. Get back in your cardboerd limousine and let the people speak. - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 1:45am
ML7Mike User Info... | Cordova Bay.. hmm yes I see that.. Odd though that you can still post a vote, Im thinking that maybe the deadline has been caught up in 'net time' ie: the deadline came to an end while the guy who does webdesign for CMW was on his week off.. or something.. :D Wonder if they have a system behind the scenes that can tell if the vote was left AFTER the 15th... - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 8:05am
M*POWER Events User Info... | ahhh, Carboard Limousine...I have all of their albums. No need to be nasty, Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous - several people in the thread brought up the Island Music Awards (aka M*POWERS), not just one. For the record, The Island Music Awards are colloquially titled "The M*POWERS" because that is the name of the physical award itself ("empower: verb. to give power to, to enable."). And no, it is not "put on by different people." It is still put on by the same person...me. By the way, artists have less than a week left to get their submissions into the IMA Jury (of various island music industry representatives). Application & info @ http://www.islandmusicawards.com Deadline: Feb.27 @ 5pm (hand-deliver, if necessary). - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 7:16am
Troutbreath User Info... | If you have a copy of Cardboard Limousine's first album "Boogie 'til ya Puke out the Sunroof" I'll pay you good money for it! - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 7:55am
kasper User Info... | ah yes, Carboard Limousine's "Boogie..." is a classic record. Thanks for the reminder, Trout - I think I'll put that one on the phonograph right now. My favourite tracks are "Um, That Isn't Champagne You're Drinking," "Why Is the Car Phone Made of Styrofoam?" and "The Driver Looks Human But He's Actually Claymation." - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 9:37am
Zippgunn User Info... | So if I read Cordova Bay's post correctly, Gogo has been nominated for a JUNO... by Dave Gogo or, by extension, Cordova Bay records? - Tue, 9 Mar 2004 9:36am
Cordova Bay User Info... | Wasn't Boogie till you Puke by Root Boy Slim & The Sex Change Band?? Once per year submissions are made for JUNO Award consideration. The submissions are sent along with the submission fee and a bucket of promo material. The nominations are then made by the various nomination committees that usually number 10 to 20 industry gurus. The nomination committees screen the submissions and select 5 who are then named as the nominees. This takes about 3 months. The judges for the categories then, based on supplied material, vote for the category winner who is announced either at the JUNO Award televised show or the pre-show that takes place the night before. There are too many categories to have them all announced at once. We don't have to worry about Gogo though. His nomination was rescinded a week ago because it was deemed to not meet eligibility requirements. The requirement is for 25% of the material to be new, previously unreleased music but the submission requirement was for 25% of the material to be new "cuts". All of the "cuts" on his "Live at Deer Lake" are new but the songs all appear on earlier released albums. Much swearing and gnashing of teeth ensued but in the end Gogo's nomination was replaced with Rocket 88 Band out of Toronto. - Wed, 10 Mar 2004 2:33pm
