But Im A Creep User Info... | Ok heres the deal. I live in Victoria at the moment and am pondering moving to Vancover after I finish high school because I think I will have a greater musical future there. I just need oppinions on whether it would be a good choice or a bad choice. I am currently writting stuff by myself but I am going to look for band members when I am done school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 7:55am
Rollerballs User Info... | well what kinder music will you be playin? - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 8:51am
jay brown User Info... | 99% of musicians in victoria cannot support themselves playing music, it has to be something they do after work. Almost all of the musicians I know that have managed to give up the day jobs and just do music have moved to Vancouver or beyond. Victoria is a beautiful city but it's just not big enough to support very many artists. It's not that big of a deal Van is only an hour away if you do move. - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 10:02am
BBJones User Info... | Victoria is a great little place to test things out with little consequence... basically to tell if you are any good or not. In my opinion, where you live or work makes no matter, if you are good enough you will be sucessful and gain reconginition. But then again, I'm not successful or recognized so what the hell do I know?? Move to Van! :) - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 10:17am
Wreaker of Havoc User Info... | Im banking on the 'mediocre and famous' anomaly.... - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 10:47am
Adrenaline Animal User Info... | If your in a hard working band, you will be touring most of the time anyway, where your "homebase" is shouldn't really matter. - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 11:01am
jay brown User Info... | Ah see now theres the funny part most hard working bands still cant support themselves off of music. Almost all of them have to get a job when the tours over. Studio musicians on the other hand can go to work playing music and still be home for dinner. Or music teachers for that matter. Theres a long list of ways to make music without having to get another job it's just a matter of whether the market is large enough to support you where you are, and more often than not it isnt here. Not that I'm complaining I choose to stay here and have to keep a day job cause I love living in this city. - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 1:16pm
69 User Info... | There is no formula for "making it" in music. You not only have to be good, you have to be lucky. I would suggest bypassing Vancouver, which is only maybe a little bit better than Victoria, and head for Toronto, the music capital of Canada. If you have ways of living legally in other countries, try Los Angeles, New York or London, England. Once you have "made it" in one of the music capitals, then you can move back to beautiful Victoria and travel to other places for the really big dough. - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 3:03pm

The One After Two User Info... | Yeah, I wouldn't move to Vancouver to become a rock star, that city is littered with Island actors/musicians/writers... they go to vancouver film school and serve coffee. Move to Van for a change of pace or for school, but like anywhere, you'll need networks, and you're probably better off in Victoria for starts. I personally find Victoria, easier to rock, there are lots of bars and few bands, Vancouver is opposite land, trillions of bands better than you, no venues. But as another post said, if playing music for money is your thing, their might be more oppertunity to work at a record/guitar shop or teach in Vancouver or one of its burbs... As for London, NYC or LA...you'll be a very little fish, like plankton, in a retarded huge Ocean, you better be John Mayer or something, or else pretty good at washing dishes - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 2:26pm
H User Info... | Well, do you want to be a rockstar or a professional musician? Seriously here, getting to "Rockstar" status has very little to do with location. Try luck, looks, and maybe some talent. But if you want to be a professional musician, Victoria is not the place to be at all. Neither is Van - too many bands and nowhere to play. Move to Toronto or maybe Montreal... but for fucks sakes don't even think about Vancouver for a second - Sat, 24 Jan 2004 2:29pm
