I want criticism...I'm a local solo musician...I am admittedly a pop/rock kinda guy...I WANT people to rip me apart and slag my songwriting...Make fun of me, criticize my voice, and tear apart my lyrics....Why you ask? Why the fuck not?...This site is mostly filled with musicians...And while I wait to put a really good band together, I invite critics to do what you will with me...Thanks...Mark - Fri, 13 Sep 2002 1:03am

hmmm. i think ... wait. wasted and see myself are the same tracks, and it took me about 45 secs to figure that out. well then, having established myself with sufficient credit, lets continue. everything seems to be grounds for a 'good song', in short, i just don't like the format. It sounds like it could easily achive top 40 status given enuf publicity + hours upon hours of radio play. I have to say, i personally loathe the top 40 and everything it stands for. too much $$$ and rip off 'rock stars' but anyway. musically, i think the bass needs a good kick in the ass or something to get it going. i believe that bass + drums = groove, and thats something i just dont feel from your music. this IS easy listening and reminds me of spending time in a dentist's chair. vocally (two lls or one?) i like the things you're saying ("there's a light in you, it's just not always on") and it's easy enough to relate too, but the way you sing it seems so anonymous. there seems like a lot of words that flow nicely together but don't really say anything on their own. that's a generalization, and an easy one at that on my part. WHERES THE REAL YOU? WHERE'S THE FUCKING FEELING MAN? this music doesn't convince me of anything.

oh yea, and grow that goatee out some more, eh?

p.s.

good for you for posting this and openly inviting criticism. to me that reveals an open mind and a strong will. see you on the flip side. - Fri, 13 Sep 2002 3:09pm
Mark Virge...Thankyou...The tunes are essentially demos, which I am planning to re-record, with feeling, and put my all into them...I know what you are saying about the commercial aspect of the tunes, but that's the kind of stuff I write, and I'm not trying to be anyone else...It's just what comes out. The real shit will be on my upcoming debut solo CD at the end of November....I'll be pulling no punches, and putting my life and feelings on the line. I have something to prove, believe me. - Fri, 13 Sep 2002 6:56pm
Mark By the way Virge, I really appreciated your honest critique, and it definitely made me think about what I'm doing, and why I'm doing it. I promise that if/when you hear my next work, you will AT LEAST be able to say I put my all into it. Thanks! - Fri, 13 Sep 2002 9:46pm

Mark Well Ben...The GREAT thing about what I do, is that I can write, record, sing, produce, arrange and perform all styles of music, and have done for about 16 years...I've been in metal bands, rock bands, an R&B group, pop/rock groups, and not to follow a trend, or jump on any bandwagon, but because I wanted to, and I could. Music is music, and a good song is a good song, so a comment like "I heard N Sync are looking" is a total compliment, thanks. You didn't specify if you actually like N Sync, but I personally think out of all the "boy bands" they are the best in their particular genre...I've had stuff on the radio, in rotation, played a ton of gigs, won tons of Band Warz, had a record deal in '98, and now I'm independent, and can do whatever I want, when I want, with your Mom if I want(kidding about the Mom part). I'm #31 on the top 100 unsigned artist chart on mp3.com, and will a featured artist on September 19th in the pop genre on garageband.com...I was hoping for articulate, and well thought out criticism on my production, arrangement etc. Now go make me a sandwich, kid! - Sat, 14 Sep 2002 2:09pm
bex wow. i really liked your songs =)
i write folk but a lot of my stuff runs the pop gamut... heh
dont worry about the flack ya get, just keep writing!!
you're good! peace - Mon, 16 Sep 2002 2:48am
bex fuck, forgot the whole "constructive critisism" part of my post...!

i liked "wasted", its the best song of yours on mp3.com great hook, good progression through the track but you need to sing your vocals with a little more conviction, a little more heart. the lyrics didnt really grab me that much, they're kinda, blah. they need some pizazz =)
and the chorus needs a little depth. its needs bass and more layers to it. i like the simple sound for the verse tho.. it makes the lyrics pop.
there we go!!
this is my first time posting on here so dont abuse me... too much. heh (or who knows...i just might like it!) - Mon, 16 Sep 2002 2:55am
Mark Thanks Bex...Ya, I've had alot of good response to that tune, and I agree, it needs more layers, and the guitar sound annoys me too. I am going to re-record it, add some keys as well, and shine it up a bit. I wasn't really mad at the previous guy, so no worries, I just like to be a little sarcastic sometimes...It's fun...I appreciate your advice, and I don't disagree with you on anything you said. Good luck with your tunes too. You got an mp3 site? - Mon, 16 Sep 2002 2:31pm
