Event Description

Antonia Mahon and Christine Purvis perform Prelude in Classic Style by Gordon Young (1919-1998) arranged by L Smith, Fantasie in C Major by Johnann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780), Basilica Triptych by James Woodman (b. 1957), Suite Antique by John Rutter (b. 1945) and Fantasia on "Down Ampney" by Elliot Weisgarber (1919 - 2001).

Flautist Antonia Mahon received her early musical education in Nova Scotia, followed by a Bachelor of Music degree and a certificate for excellence in Performance from Mount Allison University, New Brunswick. She spent the next seven years in Germany, studying in Freiburg and Munich where she received a Flute Performance Certificate from the Richard Strauss Konservatorium. Antonia has performed as soloist with orchestras in Australia, Canada and Germany and has played with orchestras in Pforzheim and Munich, Germany, Great Britain and Canada. Antonia moved to the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia in 1987, where she was an active performer, the Executive Director of the Penticton Academy of Music and the founding director of Quicksilver Flute Choir. Antonia moved to the Comox Valley in 2014 and continues to perform as a recitalist and orchestral player.

With over 30 years of performing, Christine Purvis began her music studies in Quebec and graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a Bachelor of Music in piano, organ and voice. She continued her studies in Vancouver and Seattle, obtaining a Master’s Degree from the University of British Columbia before pursuing advanced studies on harpsichord with Trevor Pinnock in London, England. Christine was the founding director of the Canadian Music Centres in Vancouver and Calgary prior to moving to Courtenay, where she worked as an organist and teacher, and founded the North Island Choral Society. Along with developing a reputation as a master teacher, Christine performed extensively on piano, organ and voice. One of her memorable performances was held in Peebles, Scotland at the church where her grandfather had been the organist in the early 1900s. Christine moved to the south island in 2012 and was the president of the local chapter of the Royal Canadian College of Organists between 2013 and 2018. Christine is currently Music Director at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Victoria.
