Event Description

Our mentor this month BJ Cook.

BJ Cook cut her teeth on jazz music.

She was born in Vancouver and raised in Victoria where she started her vocal career performing with the Ted Spencer Orchestra. BJ worked with the local musicians and had a band called the Apaches.

At the age of 18, she moved to Vancouver and worked the circuit as a vocalist from 1960 – 1969.

David Foster whom she had known, came to Vancouver to recruit her to work with Ronnie Hawkins and moved to Toronto. While in Toronto, she and David Foster created the band Skylark.

After working with Ronnie, she and David left for Vancouver to put the band together and to find the perfect combination of musicians.

Doug Edwards, guitar player for the band Skylark along with Dave Richardson both from Victoria, wrote the song “Wildflower” and with that song the band Skylark was immediately signed to Capitol Records where the song became a number 1 hit. David married BJ and they were married for 10 years. After their split, BJ moved to Toronto and resided there for 15 years.

BJ was a lyricist and wrote with Michael MacDonald, Brenda Russell, Bill Champlin, and with Dominic Troiano. Some of her work with Troiano were the TV theme songs “Night Heat”, “Hot Shots” and “Air Waves” She also co-wrote the theme song for the movie “Meatballs 3”

BJ has 2 daughters Tamre Winger and Amy Foster, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild on the way. Amy and Michael Buble wrote the hits “Home”, “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet” and “You’re Everything”

BJ has contributed to the David Foster Foundation events across the country as a talent coordinator and now continues to mentor and support up and coming talent.
