Event Description

Join us to discuss the renegotiation of the Columbia River Treaty between Canada and the United States and important issues related to transboundary water governance.

“Treaty Talks: Paddling up the Columbia River for People and Salmon” takes us on a journey 1243 miles upriver from the sea to the source of the Columbia River. The documentary highlights this three-month expedition in honour of salmon, and the positive efforts of Columbia River citizens who are working to restore historic salmon runs above the Grand Coulee Dam.

After the film, we will have a moderated panel discussion exploring issues related to ecosystem health, salmon passage, transboundary watershed governance, and the Columbia River Treaty. We’ll be joined by Jay Johnson, Chief Negotiator and Senior Policy Advisor of the Okanagan Nation Alliance, Kathy Eicheberger, Executive Director of the Columbia River Treaty Review, and Jesse Baltutis, Graduate Fellow at UVic’s Centre for Global Studies, Ph.D. research in transboundary governance.
