I like umbrellas in my Blue Buck. Ok? Is that a problem? Maybe a little lime on the side and a garnish of parsley. I was going to run it by the crowd before I did it but I didn't see the point in it... - Tue, 15 Sep 2009 2:12pm

OBITUARY were amazing. The drums and leads and vocals sounded so clear and loud and just.. awesome show. Totally exceeded my expectations. And a drum solo! followed by a guitar solo! woot!

Haha Nick I did too, but I still only had 3 cause I had to drive later. - Tue, 15 Sep 2009 2:28pm

That guitar solo was meandering trash. In my opinion, Allen West was sorely missed. James Murphy would have been unreal. Haha.
To see Trevor Peres play 'Dying' in person was worth the cost of admission alone. They should have had Meathook Seed open instead of Shitflinger. - Tue, 15 Sep 2009 3:59pm

Funny, I thought the same thing about Meathook Seed but when The Berzerker was playing. Would have been awesome, and logistically not as complicated either than bringing the Aussies up...who were alright after a few songs. That gabber bassdrum sample got kinda annoying though.

Warbringer was a lot better live than on record, great front man, bored looking bass player, kinda faceless thrash. Stop coming to Victoria every 2 months and go write kickass thrash instead!

Krisiun fucking crushed, what incredible musicianship and brutal sound! Front man had a very appreciative attitude, which was awesome. I'm puzzled why they played for only half an hour...Warbringer could have cut a song or two and have these Brazilian Mr Hells play a full set.

Goatwhore was cool, guitarist had an awesome sound and a healthy appreciation of Celtic Frost and Venom. The faster more extreme parts were kind of meh. By this time of the night though, everyone was just simply craving Obituary.

Somehow Obi-wan just didn't really seem to pulling the full 100%...there was something missing. Besides a load of classic songs that were replaced by less inspired newer stuff. Sound was awesome, as were John Tardy and Trevor "The Skull" Peres.

I just kept waiting for it to get really crushing, but it didn't really happen. Then when no one was still expecting an encore came that embarrassing 10 minute drum solo full of basic stuff that every novice metal drummer can pull off, but he just kept going...and then Ralph Santolla shows up to add insult to injury, shitting out the same lame shred guitar warm-up exercises he'd been playing all night instead of West and Murphy's atmospheric leads. That whole travesty was NOT Obituary. Get rid of that self-absorbed dwarf asap please. The band could have played 3-4 classics instead of that whole painful drums/guitar solo episode.

Luckily there was Slowly We Rot to save the day, though not unexpected. Overall it was kickass to see Obituary, but a letdown at the same time.

A huge chunk of the crowd seemed to have already left when Obituary was into their set. Yes it was a Monday, but the fact that there were four bands playing before the headliner probably had to do with it too. I was totally spent at the end of the night. I really hope that this trend of cramming as many bands into a touring package will soon blow over, so you can go see a smaller selection of all awesome bands at a decent time, all getting plenty of time to play a full set. I guess we'll have to wait for the "Economic Adjustment" to play out. - Tue, 15 Sep 2009 10:39pm Edited: Tue, 15 Sep 2009 10:42pm

The Berzerker's frontman I think is trying to sound more "hardcore". I do like Dissimulate so the couple of tracks were sweet.

Warbringer are one of those band that I think is super fun live but I probably won't like it on record.

Yeah Krisiun should have played for way longer, I agree. Newer stuff is less super-blasty which is good for them. They stole the show imo.

Goatwhore were really tight. Played a little stuff off Eclipse of Ages into Black. I hope the lead singer comes by with Soilent Green in the future, if that band is even touring.

Obituary was pretty fun. I remembered that one song "Don't Care" from old episodes of LOUD on Much Music. That is about all my experience with them. Anyways nothing to complain about them, but I'm not familiar enough. - Wed, 16 Sep 2009 1:56am

I had to work Monday night, and by the time I realized Obituary was playing in Victoria it was too late. I think the main reason I wasn't as stoked about the gig was cause it was held at Sugar, and I really hate that venue. That would of been worth seeing though, perhaps they'll play somewhere better next. :) - Wed, 16 Sep 2009 2:32am

I'm chuffed I missed this show but I'm dead broke. I'm not as cute as Nick so I don't get free passes. I fucking loooooooved obituary growing up, slowly we rot was one of the first metal songs I learned on guitar. All I could tell myself was that missing this show, in the grand scheme of things, isn't that big of a deal because I've seen a million shows over the years and will continue to see shows until my head falls off from headbanging.

Also, NICK, Krisiun are defined by their super-blast, although I like their new stuff and its certainly no less brutal, being relieved that they aren't blasting all the time is false-city.

Hahahah The Bezerker's gabber bass-drum sound. This band has always annoyed me.

Also, I think the big-lineup tours that are happening now were born out of necessity, as a lot of people will usually come for 1 or 2 of the 5 bands, so a bigger spread equals bigger draws. Take that with a grain of salt though, I don't see the need for a BIG club, BIG tour van, and a BIG crowd. - Thu, 17 Sep 2009 11:43am

I knew a guy from England who used the word "chuffed" to express total joy?

And I tell myself that same thing about missing shows all the time, but especially when you're a big fan of a band, its a serious injustice to miss them.
I think if certain musicians up there had any idea they'd be pissed, because most performers know that they're the ones missing out too. Really, we all have to acknowledge that if we're heavily into music, this is a big deal. I know I'm screwing up in a big way missing a lot of stuff for silly reasons, some missed shows i still can't even talk about, and stories I've heard about friends missing out... ugh.
Sorry to derail, makes me upset. - Thu, 17 Sep 2009 12:45pm Edited: Thu, 17 Sep 2009 12:46pm

Dude fuck...I got a hard time before about saying a band was "less blasty" in a positive tone. Do you realize that playing blast beats is not THE absolute necessity of music? Sure I like me some blasty fun, but when a band is putting out album after album of the SAME thing OVER and OVER it's a bit boring. It's not like Krisiun recorded Conquerors of Armageddon and then called it a day so it never gets stale. Have you HEARD Ageless Venemous? The drums are so over the top it just sounds goofy.

Then again I care more about music being interesting than adhering to strict genre rules. - Sat, 19 Sep 2009 4:04am

I have heard Ageless Venemous and it fucking rules, as does all their output (including the new stuff.) I was disappointed they aren't as blasty but I also make sure to stress it in no way makes them any less awesome. Krisiun aren't breaking any genre ruless anyways, in fact I would say their recent double-kick/stop meddlings are the result of their contemporaries doing the same thing, but they're still "just another deathmetal band" at the end of the day. What I find kind of disappointing is that there aren't any other "krisiun's" out there doing it halfway as good as they did, and now there are no "krisiun's" out there period. Krisiun are fucking super awesome though, I'm not downplaying how awesome their new stuff is and how terrific they are live.

For the record, I find straight-blasting as enjoyable as a band that mostly has thrash beats, d-beats, scissors, whatever. Music doesn't have to be 'interesting' for me to enjoy it, or want to play it. I try not to think like a musician when I'm enjoying music. I don't just dislike a band because they don't blast all the time, or used to blast all the time but don't anymore (provided whatever it is they're doing post-blastfest is good, like krisiun perhaps, or your band hierophant).

Here's an honest question to you, though: why do you remark negatively upon a band that adheres to strict genre rules 10 or even 20 years since their inception? I suppose maybe I have an immature view of music, but I like it that way, I'm not going to try to artificially inject appreciation for bands that are more "well-rounded" or something like that. You were jocking Gridlink's Amber Grey pretty hard when it came out, and that is a pretty "ridiculous" record, so I realize we're not having an argument here about you not liking blasts anymore or something stupid like that, but how do you reconcile enjoying bands who are 1-dimensional and then on the other hand say they have to somehow make that "interesting" ? - Sat, 19 Sep 2009 1:01pm

I will put this simply because I don't feel like waxing poetic.
Krisiun are a fun band but they are not as fun (IMO) to me as Gridlink. Amber Grey also had non-artificial drums. I do like to listen to Origin though, and the same arguement could be made. However I think the overall presentation of Origin or Gridlink interests me more than Krisiun. Why? Well who knows. - Sun, 20 Sep 2009 7:39am Edited: Sun, 20 Sep 2009 7:39am

wow, great clip! just wanted to plug a GREAT comp LP that featured both Obituary AND Atheist in their early days; Xecutioner (Obituary) and R.A.V.A.G.E. (Atheist)...the LP was titled "Raging Death"...it also includes early Sadus. when this came out it was some of the most extreme metal in the world period. enjoy.
