I was wondering the other day of all the all ages venues we can use in this city what is everyones favourite, and for what reason?

Burnside, Little Fernwood, Big Fernwood, Garry Oak Room, Downtown Community Center, Oaklands, Tea House, or some other one i'm forgetting? I'm thinking more small scale venues not like the Curling Club. - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 3:18pm

I'm hesitant to give the answer to this question, because it foils my market research! Ahh, but anyways, the Little Fernwood is the best all-ages venue in Victoria. Decent rental price, medium-sized, good location, well-known, close to a major bus-route...

Burnside is depressing to be around. I feel like I'm attending a show in Edmonton.

Oaklands seems like it could have some possibilities - from what I recall, it's a nice venue, but also a bit pricey. I'd like to see some more shows here.

Dane/the Pandora Project are great, but the show has to be comparatively well-attended to deal with the sound issues owing to the ceiling height and that damnable roof.

Gary Oak is a bit out of the way, and I've never enjoyed the way that it's been lit there. Uncomfortable.

The Big Fernwood isn't my cup of tea. Too big.

The Tea House isn't feasible for booking out of town bands, without the promoter 1) taking a significant loss or 2) charging $8. - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 3:32pm

Kinda shitty when the fernwood is too big. I remember when shows HAD to be at the Fernwood, white eagle hall, OAP hall etc... because the other places were too small. - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 3:57pm

Oaklands would be an awesome venue if it didnt cost three hundred dollars to book. Little fernwood has become anal about their sixty person maximum. I like the teahouse alot: it is probably the easiest venue in town to book as far as availablilty goes and imo the funnest to play at, but the price and maximum possible capacity(around 80) make it difficult to charge 5 bux. I have broken even doing shows with two out of town bands, paying them each $100 charging six dollars there. Pandora Project like Jay said sounds horrible unless its packed. Burnside is good for shwos witha large attendance(ie. hudson Mack's last show) but is really too big for your average show. The Gary Oak room is great. Isnt too big but has a large capacity and is affordable. Its location isnt too bad, its not much farther to walk to from downtown than little fernwood - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 4:03pm

i'll have to agree there the garry oak room has always been my fav venue since i started going to shows before i knew it excisted i really liked burnside but ya its a little too big i've only ever been to one little fernwood show since i started going to shows around 3-4 years ago i know its a shame but it seemed like a cool venue big fernwood was my bands last show i admit not a good set but we got so off time cuase its so echoy in there its intence i played a show at burnside a long time ago in a different band same problem i think there needs to be a lot of people there to make it good ten too lates first show was at pandora and the room was packed so we could hear everything fine...one venue that i dont think people know about is the langford legion i know its in langford but it was a cool venue we played there once not very many people but it was a nifty little venue... - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 4:38pm
S.V. Well I see we are not your favorite venue, that's for sure (sniffle sniffle)... but I am looking to book more all ages shows at Big Fernwood. We may not have the best sound...but we have charm ;) $200.00 flat rate gets you the use of the gym and attached kitchen, tables & chairs. Unfortunately we have no risers or stage. If you are curious for more info. feel free to drop by or send me an email at the addie above (click my name).

Cheers!

Adrenaline Animal Hey S.V., We had a great time at Big fernwood, I think I might even go as far to say that it is my favortie all ages venue. Although I do miss the old weekend gig's at the brickyard. - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 6:02pm
JAy Funnest to play: Tie, Little fernwood/tea house (except I heard the Tea house smells like dog now)
Best for gear: anything BUT the tea house
Best for sound: Is there a good sounding venue it town? I think oaklands might be o.k.
The Gary Oak room is fucked. i don't really like seeing shows there, forget about playing them, plus they are anal about posters and shit.
Really it's hit or miss at the bigger venues like big fernwood, Burnside and the Pandora Project. - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 6:22pm

I was unaware that the Gary Oak Room awas anal about posters.... stories please....
The Oak BAy BAckporch was very anal about posters... we wernt allowed the word hardcore on them, because they were worried people might think it meant porn. - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 6:38pm
Roger Cats Are shows stilled allowed at the Little Fernwood?? - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 7:16pm

I'll agree Little Fernwood is a rad venue, but I didn't think you could really do shows there anymore? I mean they have a capacity of 60 but no one really ever complained if you put 100 in there and that was its charm. I like burnside because when you put the band on the stage all the matts up on the stage help muffle the drum kit and create a cleaner sound for mic'ing. Plus they're really rad to deal with. Garry Oak room I've found to be best for price/vs capacity and i've never had a problem with posters and them, all they told me once is "try not to poster too much near the cook street village as some woman gets really angry and phones us all the time about it" And for the record posters never stay up arround there anyway.

Big fernwood and Pandora are good for the bigger shows but it costs so much more to do shows there as you need a better PA (which for anyones interst we are upgrading ours and getting a sub) and a stage, which is a pain to set up *laugh* Personally i'm not a huge fan of the teahouse as I think my basement is better suited to shows and its free

Also do any of you guys know of a place with a 500 person capacity other then the Uivc Multi Purpose room? - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 7:20pm

Fairfield Community Centre. TBP forever!!!!!!! and oh yeah HALFKUT/TED BUNDY shows at the Brickyard were glorious. Not really, but that was back in the day. - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 10:04pm
Evil Brian I'd have to say the Backporch was always my favorite venue... do they still do show's there? - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 10:39pm
yo momma at Shortfall Those Ten too late boys got it right. Langford legion all the way. Even the cops are nice, took away my weed but were goddamn friendly and polite about the whole thing. More shows should go on there. So go to Pandora projects on Saturday. - Thu, 28 Nov 2002 11:08pm

by all means little fernwood is the best all ages venue, many a good shows have taken place there, the only problem is all the complaints that they get from the resients in the area, so alas they are only allowed to have one show a month there. *sniffle sniffle*.
and pandora is so central that usually you can get an alright turn out, but as has been stated the sound is kinda shitty.
as for big fernwood, it has major potential, but it is rather large, and i have yet to go to a show there that truely does the venue justice.
i think that little fernwood is due for a revival! - Fri, 29 Nov 2002 10:18am

fuck yeah! - Fri, 29 Nov 2002 10:22am
JAy Hey Josh, wasn't the gary oak room being super dicks about that show that you ended up doing at the back porch? I thought that the reason the GOR wasn't used was because they were too much of a pain to deal with. - Fri, 29 Nov 2002 11:49am

I think that they had stopped allowing shows for awhile... and then when I tried to book one show there they didnt understand and thought it was a dance and that they needed tonnes of staff there. I think that show eneded up at the teahoue actually. - Fri, 29 Nov 2002 1:30pm

Yeah I sorta remembeer the night Ted Bundy played Fairfield Centre and both Gene-O and I broke our axes in half on stage and I dripped blood all over the fucking place and the people running it tossed us out saying we were talentless and rude. Best compliments we ever got. Ever. Still have the scar to this day. Why don't they have shows there anymore? - Fri, 29 Nov 2002 2:14pm

a couple of shows ruined the Fairfield hall. There was a Manifest show there with the pricks and FTLOS from Seattle Drunktank also played. The Canadian flagpole was ripped from the ceiling. Also... there was a bonerdogs show there, where the hall was left covered in puke which, I'm sure wasn't appreciated by the staff who had to then preform their sunday school activities on a puke encrusted floor. Also a chalkboard was shattered, and part of the wall had to be removed to allow acces to the fridge-- where my beer was. - Fri, 29 Nov 2002 7:48pm

my favorite all ages venue currently is the Tea House... I think it is a great new addition to the all ages venues in victoria. I hope it stays around for a while. I absolutely love going to shows there.

nostalgia commands me to mention the langford youth center, although not in service anymore, it served everyone well for years, and some of the best shows in victoria were there.... anyone remeber the 1$ show??? - Fri, 29 Nov 2002 10:16pm
