Hi all.

I am a visitor to Victoria...actually first time in British Columbia. I am here visiting my bro. Was in Vancouver for about two weeks and here now until after New Years.

My bro and I are musicians from Montreal and based on what I have seen, heard and been told, I have a few observations/questions for those of you that are from BC.

1-Since it is obvious to the entire country that BC is a maniacal eco province, perhaps someone can explain to me the propensity for your populace to litter. Montreal is 10 times the size of Vancouver and 20 times the size of Victoria and we don't seem to have this problem to the degree that you guys do? I have seen drivers toss bags of left over MacDonald's into the street, dumping ash trays at red lights, dog excrement on sidewalks all over the place, trash strewn all over the place when a garbage can is just feet away? Seems to me that there are either less eco maniacs than advertised or this province has more than its fair share of hypocrites.

2-My bro told me before I got here that the talent pool in this city was next to nil. I didn't really take him seriously until getting here. Couldn't be as bad as he said. Since getting here, I have met so many losers that say they are hot when they are not...Seen bands almost every night and at first I thought it was funny, but apparently you guys have a serious lack of trained, good musicians. As he said "allot of peeps with huge ego's and nothing to back them up. Lots of bad attitudes attached to terrible playa's. In Montreal, you get one or the other. A good playa with a bad attitude, one can handle. A bad playa with a good attitude can also be handled, but both! and so many? Been in my bro's rehearsal spot when he has tried out playa's and it's amazing!

3-Of the bands that I have seen; Jeffrey says, terrible. That 70's band, terrible. A few country bands that were laughable. Meat Locker seven, Great! Dayglows, holy shit, bad. Moneyshot, terrible. Sweathogs, really bad. Pariah, even worse. The Midnights, not a stitch of talent. The list goes on and on...He was the one that told me about this site so I could check out more shows. It's a great idea and well put together. Wish we had something like this in Montreal. Listened to allot of tracks over the last few days and the only ones that I really liked were Sonic Dooms stuff. Cool name too!

Anyhow, those are just my opinions and I had some time to kill this morning so I thought I would post them. I'm sure I'll get some kinda of feedback. Judging from what I've seen on this site, it won't be pretty I'm sure but...that's the way it goes.

Peace out yall! - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 10:09am

I dunno, they have fun and play gigs, and if they were that bad, then noone would come out and support the bands. Sweathogs are awesome live, BTW. I've heard quite a few bands from Montreal, I dunno, the bands sound similar playing wise. Must be an east coast thing *shrug* - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 10:58am

BTW Griffin. just so you know, I know that it's a mcuh bigger city with more people but great playa's are on every corner in montreal. There's a serious lack of bad ones there. This is a good thing, but what does that say about the dedication of local playas here? - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 11:30am

It's not a major media centre here, so there's more originality and less radio friendly bands here than most cities. Bands that want to get somewhere almost always end up moving to Van or someplace else to get more attention. Seems that way anyway. Also, hardly any bigger name bands ever come here, partly due to the cost of getting a touring band on the ferry and back, and partly due to the fact that shows are generally poorly attended. Oh well... - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 11:34am

Well at the risk of sounding peevish I might mention that the only good bands I've ever heard out of Montreal are (early) Voivod and My Dog Popper. This from a city approximately 10 times the size of Victoria. And the francophone pop from there is excruciatingly bad. - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 11:40am

well pop is excuciatingly bad everywhere, let alone french pop. but there are allot more bands (even though I hate some of their music) that have come from Montreal. Frank Marino, april wine, corey heart, voivod, aldo nova, my dog popper etc...and then there are the monsters like oscar peterson, charlie biddle, bob mover, dave turner, alain caron, uzeb some of the greates jazz guys. peterson wasn't born there but has lived there most of his adult life and calls himself a montrealer. so...not sure what you're talkin about. to make a killer band you need killer playa's is what i'm sayin and it appears their aint any here to speak of. back home there are tons thats why you need to be good, to keep up with everyone else. - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 12:19pm

Good bands from Montreal area:
Voivod
Quo Vadis

Anonymus
Cryptopsy
Kataklysm
Neuraxis

Montreal is not ten times the size of Vancouver! Maybe you meant 0.75 times the size. You're crazy. I love Montreal, and there are definitely a few good bands to come from there... Voivod, The Dears, Men Without Hats, Les Georges Leningrad, Rufus Wainwright, and others. BUT, proportionally, that is, per capita, I say it loses big time to Victoria. Except, I guess if you mean there aren't as many long-haired, guitar-tapping Eddie Van Halens (or whatever) around; it's probably less of a "technical" city as a whole. - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 12:54pm

Alot of the hottest jazz players on Van Isle are older retired guys who live up island. My dad is a jazzman, and old, so he knows all these old time cats through his fogie scene, who have made a living touring jazz all their lives. My dad's wife is a somewhat established local jazz vocalist, but then again she is from California so maybe that doesnt count either. Anyhow, my dad is more an amateur jazz player ( but well rounded, he has played Clarinet, Sax, guitar, vibes, drums and keys at different points in his life, now he concentrates on stand up bass ) but he gets together with these masters for fun jams and they are very good to watch.

Best jazz Ive seen in Victoria.. Joe Pass and The Christian Escoude Trio ( amazing band from France, Christians father was in the Django Reinhardt band ) - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 12:55pm

Some players that pop to mind:

Rick May
Tom Salter (JAF)
Dan Lapp
Danuel Tate
Ian McPherson
Hugh Fraser
Caroline Neopole
Carolyn Mark
The Eccelstons
Bill Hilly Band
Scott Henderson
Steve Barrie
Brendan from Jets Overhead
Leigh Grisewood
The Wassabi Collective (I don't like their music, but they're killer players)

well none of the playa's that I know have long hair and tapp their guits. my point was this (and i may be speaking mostly based on what i hear and see) but if we were to take per capita, there's still a hell of allot more dedicated playas there than here (based on what i have seen in the time i have been in bc). seems like eastern playas are more dedicated to bettering their craft as well...maybe its an ear thing? maybe peeps from the east have more trained ears cause they hear and see more. not puttin anyone down its just a fact of life, montreal has more of a scene and when that happens people have wider pallats. anyway you have a great board here. my bro don't like it cause of the dissin that he says goes on but...thanks livevictoria for ya feedback. ps if ya take the whole frazer valley and compare it to all the area of Montreal including laval(which is 2nd or 3rd largest city in PQ) i think you'd see 10 times the size and population. newton lol - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 1:56pm

Metro Vancouver (does not include abbotsfort) pop 1,986,965

Greater Abbotsford: pop 147,370

Greater Montreal, including laval, has 1.53 times the population of greater Vancouver and about 11 times the population of Victoria. Montreal also only had a 3% growth rate from 1996 to 2001, while Vancouver had an 8%. - Sun, 14 Dec 2003 12:37am

according to your link, victoria has 141,985 population. vancouver & abbotsford 838.897 and Montreal 1.473.491 If you looked even further, you would see that the stats from 2002 are even greater.

Apporximate population of BC 2.641 Million
Quebec 4.987 Million

Land & fresh water mass wise; BC 944.735 Quebec 1.542.056

So I stand somewhat corrected and so do you.

JohnnyBRotten at least we can agree that Moneyshot sucks but Pariah with the first singer was killer way more stage presence and definate vocal/music talent. The drummer in Pariah is one of the best drummers in town. I think he is in Self Inflicted too. But I am not sure what you came here to find. Nature or music....

Now so JohnnyB can understand!

Yo Holmes at least we have mad hate for Moneyshot but Pariah was dope with the first M.C. definate fo realness in the beats and rhymes department. Sydney 85.2

Florence 81.5
Paris 81.2
Bangkok 80.3
Quebec City 79.8
Vancouver 79.5
Venice 79.5

as for the frenchie bigots...listen you can visit montreal anytime and we would welcome you with open arms but what is probably closer to the truth is that you will never leave this little island. prince george or williams lake is as far as you are probably willing to go...and for a conquered people well we seem to have done pretty well at running this country for 30 out of 50 years...and if you do come for a visit (which is doubtful as bigots like to stay where they feel safe) i would watch the frenchie comments unless you like swimmin in the st lawrence river.

and to wolfee, you wouldnt know culture if it stood up an bit you on your face. better run to that bastion of historic events...vancouver and learn...the 150 odd years that its been around must have a window on some culture. haha not like montreals almost 400 years of existance. no culture there where french, english, east asian, asian, italian, polish, irish etc...all live happily together. where the corner store is the "depanuer" not "the chink store". where people actually use this new thing called "spices" on their foods. where you don't find telephone poles on the street and a highway is actually a highway not a street just named a highway. where auto insurance rates are barable because people can actually drive. where you can buy beer in any store anywhere until 12 and not pay an arm an a leg and its cold withough paying an extra 3 or 4 bucks to have them chill it for you. i dont blame you for being a little jelious.

ps i asked about this parish an was told that if some of you dont agree with what others are trying to do then you diss them...now thats honorable...just because you dont agree??? dawg...whats wid that??? scared cause someone tried somethin that you dont have the nerve too??

i like victoria very much and have met many very nice peoples but some of you are obvioulsy envious because you are too affraid to travel because the rest of the world would see you for exactly what you are...bigots. gladfully i have met more nice people than idiots here. come to montreal and we'll show you how a gracious city welcomes vistors as well. an you wont find many scared individuals like these ones cause most everyone there has traveled outside of at least their province haha! dawwg! - Sun, 14 Dec 2003 6:51pm

The answer to that question, bitch, is BECAUSE I DON'T LIVE IN QUEBEC, that's why. - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 2:33pm

1-so this is where you find all the biggots. never met any since i been here now i know why, cause your all in your homes on computers. well the good name of victoria wont be tarnished by your remaining in your homes so may as well stay there and spout your biggoted crap to all your other biggoted friends.
2-if french people come here and go into a store they speak or try to speak english (this is a bilingual country by law!)why the frigg do some westerners feel like your doing quebecers a big favour, or become insulted when french people speak french. you ones who say shit like that are just as bad as the seperatists that we hate...just the flip side of the coin. friggin biggots with no asperation for higher learning or broadening your horizons. why dont you visit sometime instead of listening to the bullcrap western media. but i ask this question of some people that call orientals "chinks" on a regular basis or natives "chugs". people that minimalize what they dont understand...how many time since here have i heard a white person insult natives by saying that they are all drunks??? sure we have problems in quebec too but most people are worldly enough to recognize that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable. not some of you guys though. as for my grammer or whatever its a chat board if you want perfectness then read a dictionary or join the mensa chat board.

oh yea and the next time i go to paris and can speak with the people and be respected because of higher learning and the willingness to better myself i will think of you jackass. just another loser tourista that couldnt be bothered to respect someone elses culture. playa!

I went into that store with the nicest attitude I could have for somebody who didn't speak the local native language..I respect that. I've been around...I know what it means to go somewhere and respect the culture BECAUSE it is different than mine. Hell, I have no culture I could honestly call mine. Yeah, this is a bilingual country, but who needs to speak french out here? The only french I have to know is enough to read my cereal box if I'm too lazy to turn it around. It'd be a totally different thing if the french population was much higher around here, but it isn't so....

Hahahahaahhahahaha, that slays me that you think you can go to Paris and speak the language and think you are being respected...kay-beck-kwah. I know several people from France who laugh at the shitty slang you guys call French. But you're right, you'd do better at it than I would.

BTW, I can speak some french, and I can also speak some Spanish, and not because I was forced to learn it in high school, but because I have chosen to learn for my own enjoyment, "because of higher learning and the willingness to better myself". But I don't need to explain this to you, you're french canadien, somehow superior to the rest of us. - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 3:34pm

sounds not at all like me. I speak fluent english and french. also some italian and spanish. you wouldnt know that i wasnt from here unless i had not told you gringo! and why not do a little more research there aswipe i think that youd find that we in quebec are taught parisian french. schooling is all parisian not quebecois. when my father goes to paris they think that he is from there...so these people that you speak of know nothing. france loves quebec and visa versa. i look forward to the day when biggots like you are few and far between. make a little island called biggot island for all you biggots to live out your miserable lives hating others until you are no more. some parents take there kids one step forwards and some take there kids ten steps back, guess which one you are mon amis? bon chance! - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 4:16pm

I think you meant to say mes amis, there frenchie.

And you're right, for the *most* part, the french we learn in high school is parisian, but it really depends on who is teaching you (and I don't know about you, but all my teachers were english, one was east indian). The big difference is in how it's spoken. Quebecois is different, much more slang, that's why they find it funny. Kinda like how we laugh at the newfies there eh boy. Whatever, it doesn't really matter, I was just getting a jab in there.

and yeah, since you know me so well, you can see I'm all about the hating. - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 4:42pm

if you ask my recently edjucationed ass, Canada itself is a boring place. Planet Earth is pretty weak actually. I heard Jupiter is like 1000times better with like these bands that are AMAZING, one is called Bleed An Outdated Blizzard Dear Sky and they're jazz/metal/punk/grind/ska/bluegrasscore with 20 members all of which graduated from Jupiter Music School. Plus it's so clean on Jupiter, you could eat shit from a local's anus and you wouldnt get sick! Their poo tastes like lemon candy! And people are so nice there that the minute you meet someone new they are ready with scones and tea for you to enjoy as you talk to them about how wonderful life is on Jupiter!!! Fuck you GUYS , JUPITER IS THE SHIT.

You're all sounding as silly as what I wrote above. All of you. Shut the fuck up and quit being a bunch of whiny girls. - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 7:33pm

My mom's from montreal. I love quebec, but I still don't like you. Despite what you seem to want to think (fun to flash the bigot card, huh?), it's obvious the problem everybody has with you might not be that you're french.

The problem is you're an idiot.

Come on a local board and insult the place that people call home. Tell them it's dirty and ugly. Come on a board of local musicians and tell them all the musicians in town suck.

You expected positive reactions?

Then you go on to tell everybody how great it is where you come from, and how impressed we should all be that you're from there.
You sound exactly like an american tourist expecting the backwater canadians to be impressed by your superiority.

What you have is french canadian "small man syndrome", and a need to feel oppressed fueling the belief that you are oppressed. I've seriously never heard a bunch of people who yell "bigot" as quickly as french canadians do. (remember, these are my aunts and uncles i'm talking about)
Funny thing is, you classifying a whole province of "westerners" as bigots is the most bigoted comment that's been made so far on this thread - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:20pm

Wow, i fergot about this thread...

johnnybrotten writes: This is a good thing, but what does that say about the dedication of local playas here?

Well if the artists weren't dedicated, then there wouldn't be any shows, I just feel that a lot of bands really do it for fun, or don't know how to market themselves. What it says is, if we had a central label (sorta like SubPop in Seattle) and got the word around, then perhaps the bands would do a lot better, but that's just my opinion.

I dunno about your Montreal artists are better comment, it's like night and day. Both cultures are so different. I can honestly say I don't like a lot of bands from Quebec, but ones I do like are: Saint Catherines, The Box, Grim Skunk, Fatal Illness, Ripcordz, and a few others I can't remember. - Wed, 17 Dec 2003 3:59pm

Ya know, now I think about it, this thread is just for hacking someone down from Montreal who knows nothing about our scene (as small as it is), and was expecting a lot more. I don't really know if I should be disappointed over a lot of people on here that couldn't handle a challenge and decided to hack the person down cause he's from a place we know little about, or just ignore it (I blame tonights beer fest to Granville Island Brewings "Lions Winter Ale" (they keep bringing it back, it's awesome ALE, alas, I put a product placement into this conversation :).

Hey I totally agree with him, to a point. He's only seen the shows, and I doubt he knows many of us. He's basing his decision cause he's used to the scene where he's from, and was expecting something different. I dunno, but this thread has made me chuckle at least :) Wow, it's wierd, cause all the French-Canadian people I know or spoke too (eg. Saint Catherines) we're really cool and friendly people.

In any case, he should of explained himself better, I hate translating! :) - Wed, 17 Dec 2003 10:53pm

Ack, I was in paris and attempted to speak french, most people wouldn't give you the time of day if you approached them in English.
But I would have to agree it makes me angry when people who only know one language get insulted when someone of a different language attempts to speak english, and do so fairly well be it broken. At least they are trying. On a side note, I hated french in high school, so I took a different language instead, french is gross. - Sat, 20 Dec 2003 10:06am
