I didn't necessasrily think that I was offering any kind of "logic" on the matter, all I did was make a sarcastic comment. I am un-apologetically close-minded when it comes to music that gets me off. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate any form of music from classical, jazz, blues, punk, etc. I even enjoy some rap, but the question asked was what my favourite discs of the year were...and they all just happened to be metal. In fact I'd say that at least 75% of the metal bands that I listen to have at least one member with some kind of formal jazz training. | Kyle C User Info... | Damn, that Miles Davis box set is good but a little tough to get through because the guitarist always has to use -that- tone. You know what I'm talking about; that tone that makes any Miles record with a guitar on it a little hard to take. I seriously dig the recordings all the same, though, and am pretty hard pressed to think of anything that came out this year that I liked more or found more interesting. I was real excited to hear Scott Amendola's "Cry" record, but after listening a few times over it just ends up sitting as pretty middle-of-the-road rocky jazz that just coincidentally happens to have some excellent players on it. A couple records I dug initially but stopped thinking about in a matter of weeks (Sunburned Hand of the Man "Headdress", Comets on Fire "Field Recordings from the Sun", Bellini "Snowing Sun"). I feel like I'm making some glaring omissions here because, hell, I think back on it and 2003 does not feel like a prime year for exciting recorded music. - Tue, 2 Dec 2003 6:40pm | ||

His playing on this set is simply out of control and as an added bonus we have him playing in tandem with Sonny Sharrock (doing his sickest slide playing ever) on a couple of tracks. | Kyle C User Info... | Scott: Don't get me wrong, I really like the Jack Johnson sessions set and everyone's playing on it is simply phenomenal. In fact, hearing them marked the first time I decided to pay any heed whatsoever to post-'69 Miles; I used to be so caught up with combos like Coltrane/Evans/Cobb/Chambers/Adderly on Kind of Blue and the quintet on the "Live at the Plugged Nickel" sessions (which you should definitely check out, provided you're up for ANOTHER eight-disc Miles Davis box set right away) that I wrote off everything thereafter as fusiony indulgence. This is definitely the best of the fusion-era Davis that I've heard (which, admittedly, is only a handful of records) and I do dig it. I think my biggest problem with McLaughlin is his playing seems a little "samey" at times. There are points where the playing and the crunch is just scorching (e.g. in parts of "Go Ahead John"), but a lot of the time what I hear is trebly blues leads played through some heavy wah. There seems to be a big distinction between moments of intense inspiration and moments when it just feels like he's playing by rote: I guess that's going to be a problem with any release featuring rehearsal takes, though. I grew up in a household with the Mahavishnu Orchestra playing constantly, however, so I may be more than a little inundated. That being said, I think it's ironic that the one complaint I have with these Davis sessions - that they're a little heavy on "same"-sounding guitar - is also the very thing that keeps me away from metal records. But speaking of outrageous jazz guitarists, have you heard anything recorded by Nels Cline? If not, damn, I should send a cassette your way (I'm new to town but I have more than a sneaking suspicion that there are people we know in common). Anyway, back on topic: one outstanding release from 2003 is a compilation called "Chains and Black Exhaust". Funk/Acid Rock/R&B from Memphis in the late 60s/early 70s, fuzzed out and badass as can be. Check it out. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 3:43pm | ||

| Zippgunn User Info... | Funny, I've heard a bit of Nels Cline's stuff and, oddly enough, I find a lot of his playing just a little bit "samey", however he's on a Julius Hemphill LP I have and he smokes on it. The JJ box is, as you say, mostly stuff that Miles didn't think was quite good enough for release and, you are right, there are lots of what I call "dead spots" in it, mainly because these sessions were, to all intents and purposes, free improvisations with only the most skeletal frameworks imposed on them. And these weren't rehearsals; there were no rehearsals for these sessions that I know of. Miles simply assembled everybody, gave them the odd cheat sheet or chord progression and croaked "Play, motherfucker". As for the Plugged Nickle set, yes I do have it as well as every song ever to feature a note of Miles' trumpet playing (a LOT of CD's and LP's) with the exeption of the Bird stuff which I will get around to someday, I promise. But the JJ box is my record of the year, warts and all. If you liked it wait till the On The Corner box or the Get Up With It box which I hope comes out before I croak. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 5:59pm | ||

| Zippgunn User Info... | Well I had to do my homework on this one but here are 6 2003 copyrights that any discriminating music lover should at least check out. In no particular order: Autechre-Draft 7.30 (Warp) These guys have maintained a consistent level of quality work in a genre (electronica)that often defies growth and scope. Adding to an already impressive body of work this duo has literally taken over where Kraftwerk left off and it seems the sky's the limit. Chek out the Granz Graf video (from the previous EP) if you don't believe me. Miles Davis- The Jack Johnson Sessions (Columbia/Legacy) Technically a reissue but since at least 3/4 of this had never seen the light of day before now I consider it to be new music. And it SOUNDS new, blowing away almost all of the "jazz" that pollutes the airwaves and festivals the world over. McLauglin, Jarrett, Corea, Hancock, Shorter, DeJohnette, Cobham, Sharrock, Steve Grossman, Michael Henderson, Airto all playing at their peak. I need add nothing more; if you like classic jazz/fusion you just have to buy it. Iggy Pop- Skull Ring (Virgin) I bought this fully expecting to hate it (like his previous decade's worth of output) but just had to buy it to satisfy my curiosity about the much ballyhooed Stooges reunion and despite the rather generic hit single "Little Know It All" (featuring "punk" stars Sum 41). Surprise, it absolutely blew me out of my chair, proving you can never count an old punk out, never. Without the 4 Stooges songs this would be at least an A- featuring 2 pretty good Green Day contributions, 2 welcome change-of-pace porn narratives by Ig and punk-rapper Peaches, a surprisingly authentic down home blues featuring just Ig and his acoustic guitar which IMO rather accurately sums up the current musical climate and 6 rockin songs with Iggy's current road band the Trolls. But all of the above pale to the 4 Stooges tracks which feature the most heavy bone crunching rockin' riffs available anywhere lately complete with the most unfashionably abrasive guitar sound that I've heard in years by Ron Asheton (A Strat on the bridge pickup through at least 2 Marshalls according to this engineer's ear). The slick, smooth guitar sounds of the other posers on this record are laughable in comparison, and the savage intensity of the playing is astonishing when one considers that reunions of this sort (even with great bands such as the Velvets, to name only one example) are usually pathetic cash grabs, this was a nuclear bomb completely out of left field. Ig's lyrical talents are also in fine fettle here. And to think that all the Stooges are pushing 60!!!!! Prefuse 73-One Word Extinguisher (Warp) Hip-hop (I guess coz I'm no expert there) with a twist Mr. Scott Herron deifies Pre-73 fusion music (as do I) which is his benchmark for his excursions into beat-electronica which sound wonderously human due to his dilligence in persuing obscure records for sampling purposes (I guessed a couple and they were WAY off base) The remix EP (Extinguished) isn't the place to start with this guy but for fans it's enjoyable as well. Sun Ra- Music From Tomorrow's World (Atavistic) Again not the place to start with this artist and, again not really new (it's from 1960 but never previously released) it does , however, feature possibly the best lineup Ra ever had in 1960 in Chicago just before he (and a small portion of this band) moved to New York. Jazzbos tend to sneer at Ra but if you ignore the space gimmickery and concentrate on the music this is one of the best ensembles jazz ever had and that's counting Count Basie and even Duke Ellington. Not terribly weird sounding at this late date, but wonderfully tuneful and it SWINGS. Sound quality is dubious (first half) to apocalyptic (second half) so it's really only for serious fans. I'm one. Wire-Send (Pink Flag) Yet more proof that older folks can teach the wet behind the ears younguns a thing or two this band of 50 somethings have put out what might be the densest and most rocking record that they've ever put out. Combining elements of their first (1977 era punk) phase with their second (80's style electro-dance) phase they've dumped the synth for a bunch of Danelectro guitars and Line 6 boxes to produce an amalgam that, to this fan's ears, sounds like a futuristic (and very British) version of ZZ Top with pronounced punk asthetics that drones with a power unheard of on mainstream radio yet is catchy, upbeat and even slightly dangerous sounding. Another one out of left field. The distinctly DIY looking video for "The Art Of Stopping" is a must see. - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 12:12am | ||

As far as anyone claiming metal to be superior to another style, it's all a matter of opinion and everyone is, of course, entitled to their own. But, sadly, there seems to be an increasing number of posters who don't actually have anything to say and who seem to be here just to shit on anyone and everyone else without saying anything at all about much of anything. It's one thing to rattle the cage of people you disagree with (hey, I do it myself sometimes) but it would be nice if there was actually a point behind all of it. Now there are an increasing number of posts by certain people who are simply reacting to anything in a way that suggests that they just want to piss people off without making any point at all, pro or con. Surely these people have better things to do. And to Jesse, the "west coast lock" on the SOS thing is, I believe, meant to refer to my studio (Sea of Shit, sometimes called SOS by the faint of heart). Me, I could care less but I've been asked by a LOT of people questions like "how long have you been promoting shows?", "so, you've finally started an agency" etc. (answer: never, not for a million bux, thanks).
