I was just curious on which would be a good guitar to pay emo/punk music. at a resonable price 300-400.

Thanks in advance,

Go For a Fender... Believe me, it's got an awesome tone, and I totally recommend anyone spending good money on buying one... In any case, listen to numerous emo/punk bands, then figure out what they play, and go for that instrument. I could babble for hours on how Fender got the sound like sheer fluke, but i won't. - Fri, 7 Nov 2003 11:51pm

Play a bunch of guitars until you find one that you like the feel and sound of.... Don't a buy a guitar without playing it first.... I love my knockoff Telecaster, but keep trying guitars until you find one that you hear Dreamweaver when you play it..... - Sat, 8 Nov 2003 12:21am

i would recommend a les paul epi. its rad cause its light and you can thrash around with it. also tele's are cool but a lot more difficult to play and have quite a bright tone to them unless you have a crazy rig to play through. also sg's are cheap and light as well.good luck - Sun, 9 Nov 2003 10:55am

Being the music store nerd check out either the Epiphone SG for $390 or my new favorite guitar the Ibanez JETKING in white for $420. I love that guitar - Sun, 9 Nov 2003 9:07pm

the g310 for $290 is cool but for $100 more you get a dovetail joint, meaning its not a bolt on neck, nothing is wrong with a bolt on neck but the dove tail is more like the original. - Mon, 10 Nov 2003 10:51am

Leeroy: That's strange, I find the opposite.... My Telecaster plays like butter, but I could never get into Gibsons......

There ya go, original poster, play a few until you find the ones you dig.......

Colin: That Jetking is a prettty nice little machine..... Does it play like an Artist? - Mon, 10 Nov 2003 11:07am

KnifeGhost is 100% correct - finding the right guitar is an amazing process but worth the wait. I picked up a Japanese Tele Squire last year and had a discussion with Gordie at his guitar shop in Fernwood about it - he wanted to pick the guitar up but our mutual friend had already sold it to me. This guitar is so sweet and I have owned Strats, The Paul, Les Paul, Teles, EBO, SG, Ibanez Les Paul copy, A Gibsob RD Artist (if you ever see one around here let me know - they come up on E Bay sometimes) and this current guitar is a sweetheart. I repeat - KnifeGhost is correct - keep looking until you find a guitar you fall in love with! - Wed, 12 Nov 2003 9:26pm

Yeah, I used to be all Gibson until I actually played them.... And I used to hate Telecasters, again, until I played mine....

But if it's your first guitar, it's not such a big issue.... Cause half the thing of owning your first guitar is getting to know what you like and what pisses you off..... - Thu, 13 Nov 2003 12:08am

it gets better - in the throws of having a life (and hating it at the time) I did the unthinkable - I went to the music store to look at - yes - guitars. And guess what happened? - yup - I bought one - a very nice Korean made Fender Jaguar - sweet sounding and wonderful to play - so there you go - all this talk about another guitar has made me get a fix - damn you (and thanks too - although I have to scramble now to get all my settings and processors happening by next Wed when I play with it on stage for the first time) - Sat, 15 Nov 2003 5:01am

Yeah, I'm starting to like the looks of the whole Jag/Stang/Jazzmaster wing of the Fender family...... MY next guitar will be one of those or a better telecaster.... - Sat, 15 Nov 2003 9:46pm

I now own 18 different guitars. My favorite remains my Fender Jaguar; it's bright and cuts through anything and yet it plays like melted butter. It's also a shorter scale than both Gibsons (by about 1/2 an inch) and the Fender Tele/Strat family (by almost an inch) which makes it a great guitar for starters (easier to bend notes etc.) Also I find the whammy arm stays in tune better than any other commercially available one. I find the Korean ones very hit and miss but the new US made ones are sweet and they're only about $900 (not real cheap but not too expensive either). Cool colours too (look at the on at L&M,"sea foam green") - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 10:07am

ok for the record. The korean jaguar you bought is actaully made in japan. The sea foam green one is made in the usa and is actually $1995 not $900 like scott said (have another hoogargen ! hehehh)I have always liked the firebirds, but ever since hearing daniel lanois using one with a vibrato bar I am in love. Oh and the reason we started stocking all thse cool guitars again is because they let me do the ordering! - Mon, 17 Nov 2003 12:34pm

There is no one answer to your question but there are some simple facts to know and some places to seek out.

An overwhelming majority of notable punk players are using humbucking pickups that offer nice chunky fat tones that sound great distorted. These come stock on most Gibsons. Fugazi=Gibson SG, Sex Pistols=Gibson Les Paul and so on.

Fenders, Rickenbackers and Dan Electro offer single coil pickups that deliver higher frequencies producing glassy, chiming and bell tones. Not as smooth when distorted but they have their charms.

Your price range will require a lot of searching on your part. I recommend either finding or making a Frankenstein from different parts. Find some brand name guitar that's on it's last legs and perform some surgery by putting in different pickups etc.

Check pawn shops, here and Vancouver. Go to e-bay.com (be careful for swindlers). My best advice would be to check out fatdawg.comit's the web site for Subway Guitars in Berkley California. Their whole ethic is about quality guitars at affordable prices. They used to be Dan Electro central until Dan -O's came back on the market. The owner Fat Dog is a master at making Frankenstein masterpieces. I've been there and there's a lot of kooky stuff that's well made or rather re-made. He does mail order in American prices. Your only good source for real honest to goodness vintage Moserites. - Wed, 19 Nov 2003 9:46am

Heh... speaking of the Sex Pistols, they stole a lot of their gear from well known artists in the UK (you probably knew this). I think there Gibson came from Eric Clapton (my mind is a blank). - Wed, 19 Nov 2003 7:42pm

I saw an interview with Steve Jones the Pistol's guitarist. He claimed he stole his guitar when a crowd at a David Bowie concert rushed on stage. It is quite possible that cream coloured Les Paul belonged to Mick Ronson. - Thu, 20 Nov 2003 9:26am
