"Winter" - Cordell Klier
label: Ad Noiseam http://adnoiseam.net

review by: moron http://industrial.org

The last Cordell Klier recording across my desk was pure glitch, the kind of thing where if you flipped open the lexicon for tricky electronic music it would be listed as one of the alternate pronunciations. I'm a fan of odd noises so the dry air and static suits me fine but the ability to find a path through all the dust and tiny metallic shards that is as compelling as this is quite unique. The adept merging of digital detail and evocative ambience makes for a deep and embracing "Winter" that won't be dying off any time soon.

Like most discs of this type, the clock gets a workout with a bit over 60 minutes of sound total. The 10 tracks share a lot of similarities but I find this to be much less a homogenous cube of obtuse electronics and much more a selection of distinct spaces and zones, delineated by spectrum weights and virtual room dimensions. For all I know this was composed by filtering incoming Sildenafil Citrate SPAM through MAX but regardless, the impression is one of extreme precision, long stretches of intense concentration to achieve each specific placement on the timeline.

Structure is a lot more obvious here than it was on "Apparitions". Actual (gasp!) beats appear out of the icy mist leaving noticeable footprints in the fresh snow left by the sombre clouds of resonant pads and slow, filtered orchestral attacks. The ambient aspects remind me a bit of Wilt, somewhat emotive and large as they are. The emotional level is very high for glitch based material which acts as definite identifier and the interplay between that rational and reptile is most engaging. As would be expected from C-Drik the mastering acts like magic chalk on a killer shark's pool cue and helps to effortlessly land what anyone else would find an impossible shot.

I think what really marks this release as something special is the way that it avoids sounding like a civil servant reading aloud from a structural engineering textbook despite being so heavy on the post secondary maths. As much as a I relish the dry desert, finding an oasis in the center of nothingness can be equally invigorating. For parched ears, "Winter" is like a sip of purified water with light reflecting like distant stars from the flecks of ice forming due to the intense cold. It finds a place halfway between the sub-zero Nexsound output and Aidan Baker's emotional resonance that would otherwise be difficult to reach. And once there, one that you will not wish to leave. Top notch. - Thu, 6 Nov 2003 11:24am
