the super rude dude likely got turned down by all the chick bassists and has a chip on his shoulder, he is even displaying his car in his user stats to show how large his penis is . It blows my mind that in 2003 there are still guys out there who can even think that gender has anything at all to do with ability on any instrument. - Tue, 21 Oct 2003 9:49am

ohh, goody, another know-it-all. Now that you are the one saying "open your eyes" read carefully what I just said... how gender affects one's ability to play. I did not say that gender doesn't matter in music, which is an entirely different concept than ability to play. Please tell me, and all the others here how a Y chromosome makes one a better musician? - Wed, 22 Oct 2003 7:49am

there are a tonne of reasons as to why there are not as many women who play bass, electric guitar, and drums. there are a tonne of reasons why women are more likely to be vocalists, keyboard/piano players. societal reasons, personal taste reasons, the list goes on. women are still working on moving forward from past political/societal 'norms', 'restrictions' and the like.

creative outlets: most women are more psychologically adept at expressing their feelings and creativity in outlets that many men find too 'feminine' for their liking. that's a thought to ponder.

i'm sure the female bassist from A Perfect Circle has better skill than a lot of male bassists i know.

skill is not gendre specific.

another note to make: perhaps the reason why there are more male rock/metal musicians out there and less female is that SOMEONE has to support their asses with REAL jobs, have a successful career and raise the kids!! (hahaha!)

i could go on....... - Wed, 22 Oct 2003 2:17pm

" dont even ask me to elaborate on that. we all know males are better musicians, or, "chicks" have less interest. you show me one good chick musician, i will show you 20 male musicians. fact"

Posted this in the last thread like this *or something similar*

You don't see as much chicks in "bands" for a few reasons,

1.Rap: It's pretty much a solo thing and everyone can't seem to stop wanking over this endless sespool of illiteracy, and alot of chicks are trying to go solo in this department *which for the record, I find female rappers FAR less agrovating than any males.

.Pent up shit:
Chicks girl talk or whatever when theyre pissed in most cases, us guys just get pissed, and what happens when we play? we blow uot all the hate at once and walk away in most cases, definately a popular drive for males to play.

Pop/Rave:
Admit it, chicks like this shit, and if a guy does its probably just to get chicks, and in turn, alot of chicks go this way never to be heard of again*meaning there are lots just all we see are the ones on TV*

Sex:
We all know it's true, chicks *at least this was true in the 80's?* are attracted to sweaty dudes smashing shit and rocking out, for what ever reason it may be, im sure it impacts a chick's spontanious "I need to get in a rock band!" crys as they are useually "I wanna bone a rockband!" instead.

Equality:
This is just some basic facts alot miss, humans are built the same in the limbs but not our throats, ANY human who learns can play any instrument, but vocals, guys are "naturally deeper" meaning, a female could hit the same low, but it still wont sound deep like a man, and vice versa, hence, you won't see alot of females trying out for rock/metal vocals, but look at something lighter like country, guitar playing/singing women galore*this was mainly for those who feel women somehow genetically cant play a guitar* and for the vocals, that new arch enemy chick is starting to even kick that wall a bit!

Drive and Method:
Well when you see an ad for a chick player, what is the first line you see???

"I'm a female..." NO!!!!

You girls just make yourself look totally un-professional that way and wonder why you get no calls back!
It's not that your a woman, but the fact that you need to advertize the fact, which implies it somehow is a value point for the band to look at, and since we all know gender means noithing, you look more like an ad for a hot chick swinging a guitar than a serious musician, let everyone find out when you make it to the aduition or if they ask.

And well, true as it is, there really aren't even 1/6th as meny chicks who even give bands a try than guys, why this is I couldn't tell you...

And actually I just got bored and forgot where this was going...

So this is just a rehash of something I allready made as this whole "girls cant play good music" thing has resurfaced in forms again, and if you are still reading this, congratulations for not passing out \m/ - Thu, 23 Oct 2003 7:30am

being a 'chick' vocalist myself (for a band doing a heavier style of music)....... i think you are wrong when you say we post "I'm a female..." as a value point ... anytime in the past when I have posted, I would put that ONLY because I had responded to ads before and they say "oh, we're not looking for female vocals" in a voice sounding like (uuuhhh huh-huh huuuhhh, chicks can't sing to uuhhhh heavy shit and shit). SO.......... my point is, the reason I know most women do that in their posts is because we want to avoid the individuals who already know they don't want a 'chick'. i don't think it's un-professional at all. so there. - Thu, 23 Oct 2003 12:00pm

Well don't you see my point?

A group of guys is going to see:

Female guitar looking for band, likes blah blag blah, and what are they going to think???

Just because you did it doesn't make you un pro or anything, im just telling it like it is...

as I said guys are just going to think its an ad for a chick who can somewhat play and are gonna think "music or hooters??"

And if you dont think were that stupid, just watch an episode of married with children. - Thu, 23 Oct 2003 12:28pm

i see what you're saying. it really is sad that there are so many girls/women detered from taking up guitar, drums, bass, and certain style of vox for that exact fact.

a project idea i have which i talked with a few people about already is: setting up a non-profit group here in Victoria for girls/women, to assist them with getting into parts of the music scene that lack a female presence - lessons, education on what's out there, "how to's", assistance with purchasing gear, assistance with connecting these girls/women with other "chick friendly" musicians. any thoughts on that anyone? our studio would like to sponsor it and we will most likely look for other sponsors. - Thu, 23 Oct 2003 12:33pm

I am totally into collaberating, or having a cool female in my band, for one reason. Well I've already stated this in a previous post actually. I just think it would be interesting what came out of the jams, that's all. BTW: I know nothing about playing, other then an F chord and perhaps the odd blues riff, but even something simple can create greatness. - Thu, 23 Oct 2003 11:18pm

with all the complexity in the world, sometimes simplicity is brilliance. simple is good.

i've had some pretty cool jams with all guys, just freestyling vocals..... in fact, i wish we had recorded every session. amazing stuff happens at spontaneous jams...... either that or the guitarist grabs the mic and starts singing stuff that sounds GREAT to him after a 6-pak and clears the house. - Thu, 23 Oct 2003 11:42pm

Hey listen; _always_ record your sessions, no matter how inconsequential they may seem at the time. Those little "sketches" will serve you big time in the long run. It is rather difficult when focussing on your talents to really be able to stand back and hear the entire package as a whole. I kick myself for how much farther I may have been as a player if only I had provided myself with that perspective. I am sure you know all that of course... - Fri, 24 Oct 2003 10:22am

And another thing...
All those "toe-gazer" bands...so many punk-jazz-math-rock projects that I was a part of, cool, involved and intellectually engaging....for all the males in the front row. I always knew when our performance or material was hurting because all the women would quickly lose interest and wander away. When things were really swinging, in the groove so to speak, the girls would pick up on that immediatly, intuitively. They didn't care if the song was in 17/4 time or whatever...if it was good music and it connected with them they dug it. If girls weren't dancing, we weren't doing our jobs. Point being, males and females can sometimes have different ways of percieving music and the female perspective can really cut through the B.S. "SImplicity is brilliance, simplicity is good." yup. - Fri, 24 Oct 2003 10:27am

I wish I had read this post sooner. I re-read what I wrote and it does sound like I am dissing all bassists, but in fact I am only talking about the three I know. I am pretty sure that at least a couple of them are only playing the bass to show off for my little brother. And yeah, I love my car. I originally put up the picture because I was going to sell it, but I love it too much to see it go, so I am going to keep it. Hell, I would put up a pic of me if I had one, maybe I'll find one and do that later. Thanks Lew for sticking up for me. - Fri, 24 Oct 2003 7:10pm

"women pay waaay more attention to detail. that's it right there"

Funny, my point was just the opposite I kinda felt that women pay less attention to what it "is" and what it "should" be instead tapping into the overall vibe.."feeling" it more if you will, intuitively. They are less concerned with how many para-diddles or 32nd notes are being produced as they are with hte fact of connecting eith the piece or no. - Fri, 24 Oct 2003 9:21pm
