Whats a good cheap mic for recording live performances. I need just one that will do a good job of picking up all ranges of sound.

cheers,

Try renting a pair of omnidirectional condensor mics (Studio Projects C3 or B3 (cheaper)), and a two-channel mic preamp with phantom power for a month... those should run you all of $40-60.

PUt the two mics in your jam room. Stand in both spots the mics are and fiddle with amp/vocal volumes until they sound good to your ears in that spot (a good "pre-mix"). Turn up the gain on the mic preamps until they are peaking just into the red at the loudest part of the tune you are playing (not clipping though), and roll them back just a hair.

Then run the line outs of the preamp into the "line-ins" of the soundcard of your 'puter. Download a demo version of SOnar or Cubase, or Cooledit Pro, or other software out there. You will get way way better sound than a sm58... those are great live vocal mics, but they are very directional and don't serve other instruments well .. really flat sounding.

It will take a little fiddling with the software, but the results will be far superior. - Mon, 13 Oct 2003 9:37pm

If your buying a mic for recording a live source, quit being cheap. Although there is a cheap mic which has awesome results for recording a live source, think it is the Shure 58's. I don't recommend anyone cheap out on audio gear, cause you suffer unneeded headaches in the long run, and ya don't need the stress. ;) - Tue, 14 Oct 2003 2:19am

If you can find one (or two) try to get a hold of some Realistic PZM's. They used to be about $50 new and they show up used every so often. - Tue, 14 Oct 2003 10:04am

ok, thanks a lot guys. we were recording to a 1/8 inch tape deck with two mic inputs so that may have been a lot of the problem there. i like the idea of recording straight to a computer a lot.

Zippgunn remided me about those Realistic (Radio Shack) PZM mics.

My friend found out some info on the web about 8 years ago. Those mics are the same as well known brand PZMs component for component except for the cheap 1/4 inch plugs. If you replace them with low inpedence ends you'll come out a couple hundred bucks ahead.

I have used those Realistic PZMs to record rehearsals and was quite amazed. They are little plates that pickup the resonance from whatever surfaced they are affixed to as well as ambient sounds from the room. - Wed, 15 Oct 2003 9:32am
