I've had to pretty much throw up my hands and give up when it comes to All Ages shows. They are becoming far more expensive to do than pub/club shows. Once you rent a venue, you have to hire a sound manager, security, door people and then tag on advertising from good ole Metropol and a show will cost you $1000+

Now, about 5 years back when I was doing all agers, it was worth spending a grande because ticket sales would cover it, but that is no longer the case. I no longer see teens/kidlets/whatever attending shows- even if I price it at $5! If I put on a show, I attract the 19+ crowd. Are teens no longer into the music scene or has it been so long since all age punk/metal shows were regularly had?

All agers are dieing. There are no longer many venues that will allow all agers because of the past fiasco's that have happened at places like James Bay and Fernwood.

So should I call it quits? I don't want to, but the resources to put on a show (especially a VENUE) and the people, are scarce.

Pointless to keep losing money on all agers if they can't even show up to the gigs. Fuck em and let the children whine about it, or start doing shows for themselves. - Fri, 5 Jun 2009 4:56pm

An all ages show doesn't need to cost anything near $1000 to put on. You can do it for around $300. DO IT YOUR FUCKING SELF!!! Stop hiring people to do your shit. Rent a hall and a P.A. and go to town. You don't need a sound person to do a hall show...you can do the door yourself, and get freinds to help out on that end and with security. Put up posters yourself...and go hand people some fucking hand bills. - Sat, 6 Jun 2009 5:52pm

Hahahahahaha- Show me this $300 venue I can get that can run a smooth show. If you advertise correctly with posters and handbills it still costs near $100 if you don't want your posters to llok like shit. And people aren't willing to work for free. And believe me, getting friends to help out with security is usually a bad idea and a way to end friendships. And just get a P.A. system? excuse me if I want a little more quality in my sound - Sat, 6 Jun 2009 6:19pm

R.I.P All Age Metal/Punk Shows

You're a lame drama queen. Please, DO call it quits and allow people who have a shred of drive and stamina take the reigns. Trust me, the all age scene will thrive just fine without you. Waaaaaaah = you.

Get in contact with the Bayanihan Cultural Center, it's the only affordable all-ages venue left in town at this point... pretty small, but I've seen pretty intense numbers of people cram in there. Their phone number is in the venue directory on this site. Sunset Room and the Vic Events Center are both way overpriced and in my opinion have kind of a bad vibe (although I guess that's subjective), plus they both tend to sound like shit.

I was going to go off on a rant here but instead all I'm going to say is that for once I completely agree with T. Depression. And though worded harshly Krieg is right in that there is an all-ages scene that operates here and has shows quite frequently, if we're able to pull it off anyone can. In fact there are shows happening June 13th, 21st and 27th (all at the Bayanihan), come check one out and hear some rad tuneage. - Sat, 6 Jun 2009 7:54pm Edited: Sat, 6 Jun 2009 8:03pm

Okay ,Okay. I won't bitch. Calling me harsh names is unjustified. I never said anything mean to you. Now go ahead and call me a cry baby again. This time, I'm not responding - Sat, 6 Jun 2009 8:42pm

the next show I'm doing is costing me $170 for everything, plus I promised the touring band $150. anything extra goes to the locals. clean and simple. here's the breakdown:
-venue: Bayanihan ($100, ~60 capacity)
-sound: ~$10 (borrowing roommate's PA and mic stuff, using my own mic stand and maybe more of my own mic stuff, renting speaker stands and maybe a second mic stand)
-staff: $0 (friends helping do the door and security)
-advertising: $60 (sparing use of Metropol, doing a bunch of postering myself, hand-distributing 200 handbills at shows)
-bands: $150 minimum or anything I can spare past that after the show

it's true that fewer people are going to all agers but there's still a dedicated crowd and it's still possible to break even most of the time if you're really careful with your budget.

please don't declare them dead when other people are doing them. that only perpetuates the stigma against all ages shows and the apathy that's already kind of contagious.

I agree with "T" and Bryan, and this is after I've been in a flame war with the first dude in the past. he knows how DIY shows work. people -do- work for free if they love the music or if they're good friends of yours. advertising doesn't have to cost a lot to be really effective and efficient. some people probably even think the fact that I use Metropol is going overboard with the costs. how does using friends for security cause fights with them? and, for any venue with a capacity of less than 150 or so, you really only need a PA for the vocals. drum kits and 100w half stacks are loud enough to not even be on full and still fill the room really loudly. but the PA system I borrow has 6 ins and enough power to mic anything else if I have to. you do NOT need a sound guy for small punk/metal shows. the levels almost always peak around the same so even if you're putting mics on everything, you just have to set it and leave it, then turn the PA off between bands. - Thu, 25 Jun 2009 11:14am
